Knight rider theme and I'm going criminal charge fast

Mine nearly doubled over 2 years. They cited increased costs of parts and repair work. Might be true, might not be. Might be they increased prices more than their costs did.

Emerge -avUDN @world

You now hack all the governments at once!

(I didn't check the capitalization of the flags)

boonhet ,

I think you responded to the wrong comment.

Anyway, if you need it to run on a server, I don't see why you'd need a DE. If you're talking about the client, I don't see why you'd need to run it on a server OS without a DE.

I've honestly been considering giving up my car for an electric scooter for the summer - my wife will keep her car, so we can still go to places with the family, but I don't need a car for my work commute. At the same time, I'm too lazy to wake up early enough to walk.

Helps that I live in a medium sized European town. Escooters and bikes are very viable - and you can rent them for a low fee too, from multiple providers (I do wish they didn't each require their own app, but of course they do).

boonhet ,

I've taken the local rental scooters a bunch of times, they're great utility, but quite worn. I used to cycle a bunch, but for short distances I actually prefer the scooter.

boonhet ,

We have plenty of scenarios where two cars make sense, but for a while we can do without.

boonhet ,

The clueless look he's got reminds me of Ohforf from The Noob Comic.

boonhet ,

Ah yeah, I googled the PVZ references I saw in the comments and found him. But the look just reminded me of the aforementioned character too.

boonhet ,

Third, who gives a fuck? Apparently a lot of people – as it’s very common to get questions or comments when I wear shorts during colder weather that lesser humans can’t tolerate in shorts.

As a teenager, I used to go to the gym in shorts when there was a bunch of snow outside. The amount of looks I got was amusing.

Nowadays my thermostat has adjusted a bit, I even put on a sweater when it's below 5C. No jacket until -20 though.

boonhet ,

I did the same math and my results came out the opposite way - in a much cheaper country however. I had a rent free situation over an hour away, but ended up renting an apartment near work. My time alone was worth it, being able to pay the month's rent using one week's commute time for freelancing after work. And the monthly fuel cost itself would've been 2/3 of my month's rent.

Everyone's circumstances are different. I made what I believe was the most sensible economic decision - paying to get out of commuting. For you, the opposite was sensible, commuting to reduce rent. Can't really judge you for doing what's best for your wallet in these tough times we're living.

I visited the US once for a week. Visited Walmart exactly once, and Wegmans every other time. Wegmans blows even my European expectations for a grocery store out of the water.

boonhet ,

Honestly? Walking 95 meters to the grocery store is way less effort than getting in the car, putting on your seat belt, starting the car, driving off, and parking.

I lived 300 meters from a small grocery store and a 5 minute drive from a bigger one. I almost never went to the bigger one even though it had a better selection of food.

Conference rooms should have ethernet connected to the USB-C dongle that's attached to the TV and the Jabra or whatever alternative you use.

Wouldn't want to take my laptop to the break room, I go there to take a break from work, not continue it in a different setting.

I'll agree on going to someone else's office, or using your laptop in a meeting where someone else is connected up, but that's where Wi-Fi works as the back-up.

boonhet ,

I just said wifi works as the backup solution if you're not the one presenting. If you ARE the one presenting, wouldn't you want to have a more stable connection?

boonhet ,

This is an ARM SoC. You buy your laptop with one of these because the battery should last 20-30 hours and it still gives good CPU performance at the same time. Not for gaming lol

Not sure why everyone's cheering, more competition is never bad and there are already plenty of manufacturers adding subscriptions and such, I doubt Apple would even have been the worst.

At the very least, they probably would've had a slick UI in a world of crap infotainment UIs.

However they announced Carplay 2 a few years ago and I'm hoping manufacturers will go ahead with adding that as an option so you could just opt in to Apple UI all over the car and revert back at any time. This is probably the best of both worlds. There are plenty of companies that know quite well how to build a car, they just mostly still all suck at UI.

boonhet ,

To clarify, I meant not just the UI itself being pretty, but also reaction speeds. IOS is still smoother than any Android distro I've touched and macOS, while sometimes lacking in the UI department, does nearly everything better than Windows. It doesn't do many things better than my Gentoo install with KDE Plasma, but that's hardly something for the common user who doesn't need all the customization and wants a smooth system straight out of the box.

boonhet ,

Yeah but you actually have to have an iPhone in order to use it because they are the world’s biggest dicks.

You also need an Android phone for Android Auto.

What we need then, isn't an open source UI, but rather a standard API that could be implemented by any mobile OS (or just an app, even).

I thought Las Vegas was on Earth, but I could be wrong as I haven't been there (to Las Vegas I mean, I've been to Earth).

Anyway, if you're already building a tunnel, you might as well put a train in it, even on Mars.

boonhet ,

Remind me in a few hours to tell you how the merge went!

boonhet ,

Well, I rebooted to a black screen after login, but ctrl + alt + t works to bring up a new terminal window and alt + space conjures the... whatever it's called, thingy that can be used to launch programs, calculate things, or search files. So all in all, my computer's completely usable, I'd just like to get the menus and panels back sometime. Unfortunately, I have literally no free time, which is also why using Gentoo is such a brilliant idea for me.

Walmart in talks to buy Vizio for more than $2 bln, WSJ reports (www.reuters.com)

Walmart in talks to buy Vizio for more than $2 bln, WSJ reports::Walmart is in talks to buy smart-television manufacturer Vizio for more than $2 billion, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, a move that could bolster its advertising business and give it control of more than a fifth of the U.S. television market.

Certainly not the best buy they could make.

I believe pharmaceutical companies already sell drugs to temporarily give extra life to senior hogs.

boonhet ,

Software engineer (luckily not in games) here. Definitely feeling it in terms of looking for a new job. Everyone's only looking for senior engineers and they're SUPER picky because there are so many unemployed engineers applying, even in my country where there are a lot fewer layoffs.

boonhet ,

Not only bitter, lots of people here are dissing reddit like it's a recent ex.

Some of those frequently repeated comments (well not stuff like "this") are completely organic memes that have come out of that community, which most of us were part of, me personally for over a decade. Now we suddenly hate everything we were part of?

I'm kinda tired of the reddit bashing here. I'm not going to leave over it, but it doesn't add any value whereas some of the other content has been excellent.
