Hmm they could have used that for good and solved Discords inherent un-searchability and un-archivability (Like old school forums used to have)

But no, they choose evil instead :(

cm0002 ,

There are lots of equally intensive AI models being used for various sciences. Being put to use in medicine, physics or even climate research.

Here's an article going into how AI is helping accelerate important worthwhile research

cm0002 ,

It was the government that started that in the first place lmao and then corporations went "Well the US gov can do it, why not us?"

cm0002 ,

You're reading too much into the joke lol, the joke is that aliens came, found these crazy dinosaur things that immediately killed one of their own and their response is "FUCK this place, let's get TF outta here and blow them up on our way out as payback"

cm0002 ,

Isn't MS on the government shit list right now over security missteps that led to the breach of gov officials?

cm0002 ,

Still no proper authentication like SAML, OIDC, SSO or even LDAP unfortunately :(

cm0002 ,

I was reading it as "it never fucking works right" LMAO

cm0002 ,

frustration will eventually be the largest determining factor

Never underestimate the power of frustration lol, just start subtly dropping hints after they complain about something on their preferred app and someday the straw will break the camels back.

It's easy for people to deal with BS when they're thinking it's the same BS everywhere, but once they know that there is an app that has less or no BS like that...

Or what do I know I never build up the conversation skill tree and high AF lmao

cm0002 ,

Right tool for the right job and stuff.

Right, same problem with the desktop "OS Wars", I just don't see the point. Personally, on any given day, I'm switching between all 3 major OS's

cm0002 ,

Unfortunately, video is the most intensive content to host and serve. That's why these front ends exist, to leverage Google's storage and bandwidth

cm0002 ,

I dunno, when I ran Arch for awhile AUR was the best thing about it, once enabled almost everything was...just there.

No "Oh, you have to load our repo" or "Yea it's in the [Main/Universe/Galactic/Solar system/whatever] buttt it's always 256 versions behind, so add our repo anyways"

Yea, I know it only takes a few minutes (most of the time) to add a new repo, but it gets rather annoying after awhile, especially compared to a system that has just about everything just...there ready to go.

cm0002 ,

It's Bonzi, and I would 100% skin copilot with the purple gorilla lmao

cm0002 ,

Me who lives in the black abyss of the terminal

Wtf is Hyprland? Waybar Rice?

cm0002 ,

I was driving through, I think Utah, a while back and I remember seeing a billboard ad for a local bank. They were heavily leaning into religious marketing (or maybe they were a "Christian Bank") and I remember thinking "Y'all im pretty sure Jesus had major issues with using the lord's name for business" lmao

cm0002 ,

From time to time I have to sign a form that specifically says "Print and sign, no digital signatures"

I use Adobes "draw a signature" feature to do my squibble, then place it on the signature line taking at least a little care to make it look handwritten (So like a portion of my signature is dipping below the line etc.). Finally I print to PDF (Even if it is already PDF) and email that or use one of those fax apps if fax is absolutely required.

I haven't had any such forms rejected (Well, at least not for "improper signature" or whatever) and I've been doing it on forms for well over a decade now lmao

cm0002 ,

I'm with you, but unfortunately our world is still filled with old fucks who still see paper (and by extension, wet signatures) as some sort of ultimate authoritative source

Source: I've worked in the financial industry before (and never again)

cm0002 ,

I can confirm this, I have been backing up and restoring my messages in their entirety to every new phone since my very first Android phone (so about 15 years of messages), so all my relationships have complete texting records and I've seen that almost exact pattern

Sidenote, the Google Messages app seems to handle an almost 6 GB mmssms.db file with grace lmao

cm0002 ,

Fr, absolutely pointless getting a 1TB slow spinny drive when you can get 1TB as a nice NVMe SSD for not too terribly more lmao

cm0002 ,

I mean if you need 14TBs or something you don't really have an alternative unless you're rich, but yea what a terrible AI recommending <2TB spinny drives lmao

Are you reusing one postgres instance for all services?

I have many services running on my server and about half of them use postgres. As long as I installed them manually I would always create a new database and reuse the same postgres instance for each service, which seems to me quite logical. The least amount of overhead, fast boot, etc....

cm0002 ,

Cybersecurity communities too, there was one guy on [The Other Site] I saw awhile back who, whenever somebody asked a question about what they should do to secure X or Y or if Z security product was better than V because they just did general IT, would always default to something along the lines of "If you don't know, don't bother its above you and you should shell out $$$ to an actual firm otherwise you'll be shelling out $$$$ to another firm to clean up your mess"

Surprise surprise, when I googled his username (The fact I was even able to do this isnt a great sign for a "security professional" IMO lmao) he actually owned one of those "Databreach Triage" firms...yea...I'm sure there was no conflict of interest whatsoever lmaoo

cm0002 ,

Nah, they'd just throw up a disclaimer "Not true medical advice, consult a doctor for actual confirmation" and they'd probably be in the clear

cm0002 ,

Spez could have swallowed his pride and like gig-economified (If that's not a word yet, I stake my claim lmao) mods, could have probably gotten away with paying pennies on the dollar with the right scheme (ala Amazon turk). I could see the headlines now "Reddit making waves PAYING moderators", "Make 500 bajilion Dollars JUST moderating for Reddit!" and people would have flocked to it lolol

cm0002 ,

I wasn't originally going to up vote this post because of laziness, but your comment inspired me to lmao

cm0002 ,

Also, that data is from some mobile analytics firm, how reliable are those numbers?

With all the data these damn companies vacuum up, it better be damn reliable, otherwise what is even the fucking point lmao

cm0002 ,

I hate the amount of data American social media companies collect and what they do with it

I REALLY hate having Chinese or Russian or [Insert Authoritarian Hostile Country] doing it.

American companies do it for the pursuit of profits, Companies from these countries are doing it to topple our government or whatever.

Something something the devil you know...

cm0002 ,

willing to build a chinese firewall for themself, it will be impossible to keep people from using TikTok via VPN.

A majority of people probably won't bother and just move on. A decent chunk, 30/40% maybe but that still leaves a 70/60% reduction and it's influence permanently neutered so the gov will still see it as a win

cm0002 ,

The idea that this is somehow a security risk is a giant steamy pile of bullshit to keep people buying their garbage.

There is a very small risk if you're a high value person, like an important politician or something. But those same people are incredibly unlikely to have something repaired over just buying a new one, so yea bunch of horse shit lmao

cm0002 ,

It's the parents job to parent, not the government or third parties.

There are numerous less problematic tools parents can use from parental controls to automated local monitoring to good ol fashion monitoring to good (read: not "abstinence only") sexual education.

cm0002 ,

Who gives a shit about incest if it's between consenting adults lmao 99.8% of it is fake anyways

You also must not have been to PH since "The Purge", there's hardly any actual amateur anything there anymore (For better or worse)

Also, the irony here is in your username lmfao

cm0002 ,

I wish it was never invented in the first place. I would much rather have a world where we argue over which scientific theory, or whatever, is right—rather than the one we have now, where a majority argue about whose 'flying spaghetti monster,' unseen for centuries (if ever), is better and why it trumps even the most solidly proven scientific facts.

cm0002 ,

I have a backlogged project sketched to use computer vision AI and a doorbell cam to recognize (Most of the time, they wear identifiable name tags, but I know it won't be a perfect system) when religious door knockers are at my door.

Then proceed into a rant about how organized religions are a cult and that if they want my help to leave the cult I'd be happy too, but if not they are officially being charged a "personal land space" rental fee of $25/Minute lol

cm0002 ,

And definitely don't report it as "Hateful or abusive" content or anything, it's not like Google or Apple is using automated algorithms to auto disable apps for a period of time after certain thresholds of reports are hit or anything like that

cm0002 ,

Scientific theory doesn't tell you to love your neighbor

It doesn't and religion shouldn't need to, in fact if the only thing making you a general good person is a religion, then you're not a good person. Morals and personal strength can and should be derived from other sources.

We don't need any more hate in the world.

Religion is directly responsible for the bulk of the hate, in case you haven't looked at the world around you. How many wars were started in the name of a religion? Whole groups of people are being discriminated against because of religion right now. There's a war right now because of religion. X religion people hate Y religion people just because they believe in a slightly different flying spaghetti monster. Countless lives throughout history have been lost in the name of x or y religion.

A world without religion would still have hate, crime and greed because humans are humans, but it would be so much better than currently.

cm0002 ,

The various Linux communities need to be careful what they wish for IMO, would it be great for market share to get onboard with Linux? Absolutely.

But like you said, things will have to be dumbed down and hidden extensively.

At the same time whenever a piece of Linux software or distro takes ANY step whatsoever in this direction, the backlash from the community can get rather large. They're trying to have their cake and eat it too.

IMO Linux is great the way it is, low market share and all, and we all know what happens when something starts catching on with the general public...

cm0002 ,

they specifically weren’t referring to that side of nature.

They never do, nature gets romanticized a lot and people seem to forget that nature will kill you the second it gets the chance and it won't give 2 flying fucks about it either lmao

The job applicants shut out by AI: ‘The interviewer sounded like Siri’ (www.theguardian.com)

When Ty landed an introductory phone interview with a finance and banking company last month, they assumed it would be a quick chat with a recruiter. And when they got on the phone, Ty assumed the recruiter, who introduced herself as Jaime, was human. But things got robotic....

cm0002 ,

We should build our own AI systems to mass apply and interview for jobs lmao, if you can't beat em join em ig lol

cm0002 ,

Hmm, 130 bucks for "lifetime" premium 750 daily applications, not bad at all considering the literally hundreds of hours this would save me in an average hunt lmao

Now we just need an automatic interviewer lol

cm0002 ,

Fr, capitalism has its issues, but it's still far and away better than anything we've had for 99% of human history lmao

cm0002 ,

Good stuff, can't wait to see how Apple twists themselves on this one to restrict things to just Oregon lmao

But this

There's 170 computer chips in our cell phones

Where the hell are they getting that number from lmfao, everything is fairly consolidated these days, unless they're just counting every capacitor and resistor as a "computer chip" lol

cm0002 ,

Older cars are far more unsafe though, I witnessed a near head on accident just the other day and went to help the occupants so I got to see it up close

Both vehicles were about the same amount of fucked up, except one was older. I'd peg it as a 2000-2005. The occupants of the older one were pretty messed up injury wise, though they did survive. It had standard airbags.

The other vehicle, I'd peg around mid to late 2010's, the occupants walked away without a scratch, and their vehicle interior looked like a freaking bounce house

Yea, I'll risk some manufacturer taking away my heated seats in exchange for the higher vehicle safety of a newer vehicle

Amazon Subscribe & Save percentages not adding up (lemmy.ml)

I only needed one more item to "unlock extra savings up to 15%", so I added an extra item to see what the savings would be. I didn't think the savings matched what was advertised, so I removed an item to see what the difference was (making sure to screenshot before/after this time). Turns out the price of 3 out of 4 items is the...

cm0002 ,

STOP USING AMAZON YOU FUCKING DONKEYS

Then what do I use as an alternative?

Walmart? Ooo so much better lmfao

"Shop local"? Are you gonna subsidize my bank account for the 2x-4x premium it would cost me to "shop local"

cm0002 ,

eBay is great for some things

Walmart is just slapping lipstick on a pig and calling it a chicken

Newegg can go fuck off, enshittification came for them LONG ago

cm0002 ,

There are plenty of websites for the things I want and won't mind shopping around for a few weeks, the things I need however, is a different story. My choices for something like toilet paper is 15 at Amazon, 15-17 at Walmart, or 20+ at a local store.

I and many others, can't afford to shop local, we can't afford it and Walmart is just as bad as Amazon soo Amazon it is

It's bad enough keeping up with brands to boycott, now people want others to boycott whole retail channels. Boycotting gets expensive.

Push for regulations, vote with your vote not your wallet

cm0002 ,

And I’m totally in favor of AR/VR/MR or whatever, it just has to be insanely light and comfortable

Where tf are my smart contact lenses, I was promised by various scifi shows and books that I would have smart contacts by now 😡
