Apple (slrpnk.net)

I don't care if anyone has a Xiaomi, Oneplus, Samsung, etc. Each brand is using a modified version of Android, and they chose to be compatible with each other. But for example the "blue vs green bubble" drama is a thing specifically because of Apple locking their unsuspecting users into a closed ecosystem. And it sure isn't...

cm0002 ,

Google is a bit better, Google allows you to both side load and unlock the bootloader. On those 2 things alone gives them at least a couple notches above Apple. Not to mention Android is designed around allowing you to customize things.

That being said, Google isn't some savior, they're still a giant corporation doing giant corporation things

cm0002 ,

You're probably an adult, the whole blue/green bubble is targeted at high school student demographics, ya know, the same demographic who LOVES pointless drama and bullying over stupid shit like the color of a text bubble

Apple likes this setup because by the time you leave HS you'll probably have switched to iPhone due to peer pressure and are unlikely to switch later because "it's just what I've always used" and like you've noted no longer care about the blue/green bubble debate

cm0002 ,

That's all wrong, it's going to be USB4.2 2.1x2.1 gen 2 plus

cm0002 ,

If only thunderbolt wasn't Intel proprietary BS lmao

cm0002 ,

I've said it before, but the overly simplistic interfaces and the complete lack of customization of iOS means one thing

cm0002 ,

I see the top one and think 2 things:

a) That looks like a lot of maintenance

And

b) They conveniently left out spiders, all those other bugs will attract a shit ton of spiders and I hate spiders. I like ladybugs, dragonflies, butterflies and such, but not so much that I'm willing to deal with spiders and wasps.

If someone has a way to solve both those problems I'm all for it lmao

cm0002 ,

I'm well aware, that's why I don't advocate for their total extermination like I do mosquitoes lmao

But they can do it away from me, those assholes don't need to hang out above my door or inside my car or under my outdoor seating to be part of the ecosystem...

cm0002 ,

"Base model is this, but if you want seat heaters that's another $8,000$10,000, if you want lane assist, that's another $5,000 $25,000 and requires a 512GB storage bump for $2,000"

Ftfy to more realistic numbers

You Don’t Need to Use Airplane Mode on Airplanes | Airplane mode hasn't been necessary for nearly 20 years, but the myth persists.::Airplane mode hasn't been necessary for nearly 20 years, but the myth persists.

cm0002 ,

Oh boy, who's gonna tell this guy about in-flight WiFi?

cm0002 ,

Most flights I've been on had outlets and/or USB for charging, I've been leaving airplane mode off for every flight for years now

Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure battery drain is about normal anyways when I don't plug it in, the radio must eventually switch to a lower power lower search frequency at some point. Either that or the tower searching drains your battery thing is about as overblown as the leaving GPS on thing

cm0002 ,

In the article Lenovo says that if/when they go to production it will absolutely have the ability to enable/disable the transparency

cm0002 ,

It's been a long time since I've flown on a plane without at least a USB port to plug into, most have had full outlets to plug into lmao

cm0002 ,

USB ports and outlets lol I haven't been concerned about preserving my phone's battery life while flying in a long time now lmao

cm0002 ,

Same, there's not even a battery saving aspect to it anymore now that planes have at least USB ports to charge from if not full blown outlets lol

cm0002 ,

I have a Samsung 840 (or maybe 860? Idk) 512GB bought back when 512GB was like 500$+ lol

The thing is still trucking along, being moved from system to system as the years go by. I don't even remember what system it is in currently, but I know at some point I'll open up a computer or server around my place and there it'll be again lmao

A poem by ChatGPT lol:
In a corner of the world, where tech giants lay,
A solid state drive, aging, in the fray.
Once young and swift, at data's beck and call,
Now an elder, but dutiful, standing tall.

Through systems it travels, a nomad of sorts,
From desktops to servers, in electronic forts.
Its label worn, its edges frayed,
But in the dance of bytes, it's never swayed.

"I don't remember," the owner chuckles with glee,
"Which system it's in, it's a mystery to me.
But sure as the sun rises, and the moon takes its leave,
I'll find it again, in that, I believe."

It's seen the rise of clouds, and the fall of disks,
Survived the digital tumults, with its own little risks.
Yet here it remains, a silent witness to all,
A testament to duty, refusing to fall.

For in its circuits, a heart beats on,
A steadfast guardian, from dusk till dawn.
From system to system, it wearily sighs,
Yet embraces its role, under digital skies.

So here's to the drive, with its storied past,
A relic of tech, that continues to last.
May it find its rest, in a worthy machine,
A dutiful servant, unseen but serene.

cm0002 ,

For once it's not the companies fault here, you should have seen some of the Reddit threads whenever a 2G or 3G network shutdown was announced

People coming out of the woodwork whining because their phone from 2009 or some shit wouldn't work anymore lmao

cm0002 ,

Hell there was a switch cart (Just like the DS carts of ol) that just released for like 50$ I think

cm0002 ,

Right, it's a tool with quirks, techniques and skills to use just like any other tool. ChatGPT has definitely saved me time and on at least one occasion, kept me from missing a deadline that I probably would have missed if I went about it "the old way" lmao

cm0002 ,

Pre rinsing actually makes the dishwasher do a worse job, a big part of the dishwasher detergent is to latch on to dirt and grime so when the water sprayer comes it can more easily clean it off

If you prerinse there's a lot less surface area for the detergent to do it's job

cm0002 ,

Think about some of the formats we had in the 70’s and 80’s and how often people actually have that hardware and software in working order now.

Well yea, but it's a matter of funding and business/government desire. 99% of the time the only people who care about accessing things that old are hobbyists and enthusiasts.

If something critical to a fortune 500 company or government was stored on it and they needed it they would have the means to contract out a specialty one off device just to read it (Or contract out to a very pricey data recovery shop)

And software is software, we can still run 70s and 80s software through a myriad of virtualization technologies fairly easily and cheaply.

cm0002 ,

It's not like we've never seen a company get targeted by hackers before.

Every fucking black hat is going to target porn companies lmfao, from script kiddies to state sponsored elites and it's foolish to think otherwise.

Like com'on, it would be a ripe target to get good blackmail on someone, especially powerful someones

cm0002 ,

Yea, but all that's going to do is give the IP of the household, anybody in the house could be looking at whatever

This will give them a concrete identity tie in to a specific person

Reddit: 'We Are in the Early Stages of Monetizing Our User Base' (www.404media.co)

Reddit said in a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission that its users’ posts are “a valuable source of conversation data and knowledge” that has been and will continue to be an important mechanism for training AI and large language models. The filing also states that the company believes “we are in the early...

It would be HILARIOUS if Google declared Reddit shady AF and bailed on the contract

    cm0002 ,

Maybe it'd be the first "specialty" phone with decent specs. I always get excited for these "specialty" type phones like "Linux on my PHONE? Fuck yea!"

Until I look at the specs and it's crap every single time and then I'm just disappointed, like the PinePhone Pro has just 4GB LPDDR4 (No not even the good LPDDR4x) lmao like what is this, 2015?? Lolol

    Email services for self hosters

So, I'm trying to set up a self-hosted mastodon instance, and of course this requires an email service. Self hosting one is not an option, because of anti-spam stuff, or so everyone says. The recommendations are to use services like mailgun or postmark, but there's one thing I don't really understand:...

    cm0002 ,

Idk what mailgun is doing, but many services verify your domain by having you add a specific TXT DNS record or automatic verification by logging into Cloudflare (if that's where your Domains at) or something

    cm0002 ,

Are you trying to avoid taking out another domain and use a service that offers free subdomains so it's like noreply[at]yourinstance.service.com?

I don't know of any specific service, but I would just take out another domain, they're pretty cheap for .com and .net over at Cloudflare

sudo on MacOS also fits the top panel lmao

    cm0002 ,

Yup, oh but don't worry it's all in the name of "Privacy and Security!!"/s

Personal theory is Apple is slowly getting people used to a PC being a walled garden as much as a phone. They've already stripped the hardware of all upgradability in the name of "performance" and now they're working on the software side in the name of "Privacy and Security"

    cm0002 ,

not strain global networks to much

I have personally witnessed what mass Windows updates can do to a network on a smaller scale on a college campus when I used to work IT for one

For the longest time (They eventually got around to fixing this, I was just hell desk at the time so not my problem) whenever patch Tuesday would roll around everything network wise came to a screeching halt for a solid hour while all the windows machines would update

    cm0002 ,

It's honorable to want to keep all customer data within your control, but seriously unless you already have experience dealing with PCI compliance, that's one part you should definitely offload to a payment processor. This might even be a clause in your insurance (Depending on what it covers)

I don't have any particular software in mind to recommend, but I'd bet they probably have some sort of integration with processors like Stripe or something

    cm0002 ,

The Amazon employee hired to do this and is trying to fight for unions secretly: :(

    cm0002 ,

Even if there is a comparable downloadable models, it'll be computationally expensive I doubt teens can freely run it.

For now, but with every new tech, hardware efficiency optimization is not too far behind. Especially considering the performance required for training != performance required for running/outputting.

Considering the glacier speeds our government moves, I'd bet on those hardware efficiency optimizations making it out before any significant law gets implemented.

    cm0002 ,

Same, I think it's just one of those things that's persisted from "the old days". Like needing to close recent apps on your phone or needing to charge a new device "for at least 6 hours before using it" and it's really not as much of an issue with modern hardware.

    cm0002 ,

I don't know what you're talking about, she's clearly part of SecOps!

The GHackerz, no one would suspect a bunch of old granny's running an elite top tier hacking group lmao

Assuming bitlocker isn't enabled (Which it probably isn't since it's still not default yet AFAIK) boot Linux live USB > access files under user folder on disk

Waymo issued a recall after two robotaxis crashed into the same pickup truck (www.engadget.com)

Last year, two Waymo robotaxis in Phoenix "made contact" with the same pickup truck that was in the midst of being towed, which prompted the Alphabet subsidiary to issue a recall on its vehicles' software. A "recall" in this case meant rolling out a software update after investigating the issue and determining its root cause....

Fr, I'd still trust a self driving vehicle over a human driver any day of the week.

Humans are terrible drivers, this could have easily been just another person driving distracted or something and then we wouldn't even know about it because it wouldn't be news worthy.

Broadcom-owned VMware kills the free version of ESXi virtualization software (arstechnica.com)

Since Broadcom's $61 billion acquisition of VMware closed in November 2023, Broadcom has been charging ahead with major changes to the company's personnel and products. In December, Broadcom began laying off thousands of employees and stopped selling perpetually licensed versions of VMware products, pushing its customers toward...

Occasionally i will laugh when i see granny (liked this message) knowing she uses android and had to type that out but whatever.

Actually, that's just another example of Apple's shittiness. When you see that, that's not someone typing it out, that's when an Android user uses a reaction on our side.

Which should speak volumes to you, iOS was perfectly capable of understanding what an Android phone sent, but instead of simply matching it to an applicable iOS reaction (Or even just defaulting to a thumbs up or whatever), it just...does that.

The funny part is that on the Android side when an iOS/iMessage user a reaction it does exactly what you'd expect, it matches it to the applicable Android reaction lmao

    cm0002 ,

I was wondering when the minions would make it to Lemmy. We did...it!
