I use OnlyOffice and enjoy it. I do notice some fancy features missing but as I'm not a power user it doesn't bother me. I've opened OnlyOffice docx files in MS Office and vice versa many times with no issues ever. I've also installed MS fonts on my Linux distro and they work in OnlyOffice. I don't notice it pushing online features like somebody else said

Use Ublock Origin and be sure to select better filters, get her using Bitwarden the password manager, and use Quad9 DNS to block lots of bad websites and malware.

O&O Shutup is a nice Windows software to block lots of crap.

Is osmand normally terrible?

I just tried osmand. It took forever to locate me and then the map would freeze for minutes, then the blue arrow would finally jump to my location. It seems useless for real time navigation, is that normal? Google maps works fine on the phone (Android) so it's not the hardware. Is there maybe some setting I haven't found?...

sic_semper_tyrannis ,

Bring back the standard DIN design. Then we can all change out our head unit with something that has Garmin but doesn't affect the physical buttons on the dash below it.

sic_semper_tyrannis ,

And DRM free stuff so when you purchase it and download it, you truly own it

sic_semper_tyrannis ,

Voyager is nice and gets updated frequently

sic_semper_tyrannis ,

No problem. I liked it initially for the modern feeling too and then came to enjoy the gesture based controls

I don't yet know the scope of everything I might need, but right now I believe that a customer management system is the focus. A way to input their details and payment information to have an automatic recurring membership.

I don't think I really need a way for them to view their account as it won't have any fancy features. I just need to know that they are a member and have a membership renewal. They can sign up and cancel in person or over the phone (I'm not making it disgustingly hard for people to cancel like the large gyms).

On top of that I would imagine it would be nice for the software to keep track of my total number of patrons and thus a total income amount

sic_semper_tyrannis OP ,

I understand the payment will have to connect to the internet and be outsourced but I want all my customer data to stay on my server

sic_semper_tyrannis OP ,

There's a lot to look into there. It covers quite a bit so it could work. I'll research this for sure. Thank you a lot!

sic_semper_tyrannis OP ,

This looks to be just for writing out workout routines, not a client management software. It might be useful one day so thank you anyways

sic_semper_tyrannis OP ,

I did see the subscriptions module. Once you add enough modules it becomes a paid service. I have yet to find info on if Odoo is subscription based or a one time payment. I don't mind paying for a software but do not want a subscription service.

sic_semper_tyrannis OP ,

Wow, Akaunting looks really great. It seems simple and upgradable if my needs change over time. I have the ability to self host and even make a one time payment instead of subscribing to their services if I want. Thank you!

sic_semper_tyrannis OP ,

I'll keep them in mind when I design my network. Thank you

sic_semper_tyrannis OP ,

I am confused as to what this is exactly. Is it some type of operating system that makes installing certain software easy like Docker or something?

sic_semper_tyrannis OP ,

Someone else mentioned ERPnext too. It looks interesting. Certainly a possibility. Thank you

sic_semper_tyrannis OP ,

I'm not opposed to tried and true simple solutions. I think my wife would find it much easier with an automated system however. I really need a way for people to pay for their memberships and keep track of that and I have no background with this stuff. I think having a system that's already designed for this would make opening the gym less daunting. I appreciate the thought

sic_semper_tyrannis OP ,

That's good to know. I'll look into the Docker image. Thank you

sic_semper_tyrannis OP ,

I see. Thank you

Kodi via LibreElec on a RaspberryPi in a Flirc case with the Flirc remote.

Streaming pirated content used to bother me but now I see it as these streaming companies steal my data, give me ads after I pay for the service, and if I "purchase" something it's not actually mine, not DRM free, and they have the tendency to remove that so called purchased content due to licensing issues.

Any suggestions for overcoming addiction to capitalist big tech social media and streaming etc?

I've tried getting into peertube to have something to watch. I'm exploring copyleft music on open audio / funkwhale. I'm on here in lemmy as of this week. I'm playing with mastodon and the fediverse. I've tried studying psychology and psychology-adjacent territory like Deleuze and Guattari and Foucault and Derrida so I can break...

sic_semper_tyrannis ,

Good job starting, that's the hardest part. It takes time to ween yourself away. Make it inconvenient to check social media. Delete the apps and make yourself login to the webapp every time. Kodi is a good streaming platform if you're okay with piracy.

The Viofo A119 V3 might be what you're looking for. It unfortunately doesn't have the best sensors that the company produces but it also doesn't have built in GPS, voice control, Bluetooth, or WiFi. Also the mic has a button to enable or disable.

sic_semper_tyrannis ,

Good to know. Thanks for your input!

Is Framework actually "good" for the industry?

Framework as in the laptop company, just for clarity. https://frame.work/. For those unaware, the idea is that these are laptops built with a high degree of modularity so that you can replace far more than a single stick of SODIMM with the goal of even upgrading your CPU and mainboard a few years down the line....

sic_semper_tyrannis ,

I plan to get one soon. The largest value I see is in a company that cares about your right to repair and open sourcing their components so anyone can make parts easily. They also have a hardware killswitch for the camera. Also I hope to see more options for Coreboot which seems likely. If people actually care about e-waste too this seems (I haven't looked into their manufacturing deeply) like a way to not add as much trash into the environment and not waste as much material in this age of consumerism and wastefulness. Of course the upgradeability is a welcome change to the laptop market and they have official support for some Linux distros

Libro.FM seems to be an honorable website to purchase DRM free audiobooks. They'll send money from your purchase to your local bookstore of choice.

sic_semper_tyrannis ,

Exodus is also built into Aurora store. It displays the trackers on the app's page

sic_semper_tyrannis ,

I think people can flash Kodi over the standard Firestick os. On an offhand note, Flirc makes an accessory for the Firestick to allow universal remote control

Edit. I see you mentioned Fire TV. I'm guessing that's something different than a Firestick

sic_semper_tyrannis ,

Great post! Now I have a better understanding of the subject. Another meta search engine I found is 4get.ca
