How does that work when all of the production happens in other countries now? Is there some scenario where we have a socialist white collar economy? All the rhetoric surrounding Communism fits a blue collar economy where production is still the key driver of the economy. Most "1st world" economies these days are service economies not production economies. Is there some literature on how Communism fits in with a service economy?

PayPal Is Planning an Ad Business Using Data on Its Millions of Shoppers (www.wsj.com)

Wall Street Journal (paywalled) The digital payments company plans to build an ad sales business around the reams of data it generates from tracking the purchases as well as the broader spending behaviors of millions of consumers who use its services, which include the more socially-enabled Venmo app....

cobra89 ,

The issue is every competitor will use the same targeted ads. No advertiser who is not using targeted ads by utilizing tracking data will never be as competitive because their ads won't be as effective.

Until we can kill these types of advertising by making laws against it or make tools that counteract them widespread enough that it makes the business unprofitable we will continue to have our data used against us.

cobra89 ,

Uhh I think you're thinking of The Washington Post.

cobra89 ,

How does this work with local laws regarding 2 party recording? If you're on a video call and this records the other party without their permission, that is AFAIU illegal in many states in the US. I'm sure in parts of Europe as well.

cobra89 ,

Lol wut, they never claimed servers were independently controlled. Maybe you just didn't look into what you were signing up for.

When you go use different servers on Minecraft realms are you under any impression those are not controlled by Microsoft?

When you choose a different server on World of Warcraft do you think it's a non-blizzard server?...

Like just because you put yourself into a state of bad false assumptions didn't mean they tried to trick you. People have been saying this about discord from the beginning you just never cared to look.

Did you actually think this or are you just inventing a person in your mind that this has happened to? Lol

The famous rap artist Biggie was also known as The Notorious B.I.G.

cobra89 ,

On the flip side, if the genders were changed in this situation and the guy only wanted the woman because of superficial reasons like she was attractive or popular, how many people would be saying "he got what he deserves"

This is definitely one of those double standard situations. While we shouldn't be victim blaming, I think there's something to be said for calling out people who are willing to throw away an existing relationship or form a new relationship just because an "influencer" came up to them and they thought they were rich. And I think that's what the poster you are responding to was getting at.

cobra89 ,

Would be cool if the server wasn't proprietary and closed source. Until I can look through the source code of the server I'll stick to Signal who has open sourced everything and a very well security reviewed implementation.

cobra89 ,

Agree with everything but HARD disagree with #3. Pets are not a right and so many people are HORRIBLE pet owners. And when people are bad pet owners the damage they can do it unreal, like ripping the house down to the studs type of damage. Also anything that prevents people from being bad pet owners is a win in my book. That addition to the law would be AWFUL for animal welfare and it's just not needed.

cobra89 , (edited )

When you write legislation you must look at the consequences of that legislation, not just the principals of the legislation. Otherwise you end up with horrible unintended side effects.

With your rules on not allowing access for inspection an animal could have an entire year to do damage before the owner could discover it. And then what? They make a claim against their insurance? Who will then try and go after the renter who probably doesn't have the assets to pay for the damage. As a result insurance policies will increase and that cost will get passed onto innocent renters who are paying for the crappy pet owners.

Also what do you think the enforcement mechanism for this is for "The State"? How are they going to be able to look into the living conditions of these animals? There is no good way to enforce that and it will just end up with thousands and thousands of animals being neglected. You can't just ignore the issues legislation will cause because you only care about principles. That's just ignorant and neglectful.

cobra89 ,

It's also not unreasonable for apartment buildings to ban larger pets that would be cruel to keep in a small apartment.

cobra89 ,

Aren't her albums made up stories now, like theme albums? Like she did with Folklore?

cobra89 ,

Sounds exactly like Usenet, or any of the GNUtella network stuff back in the day (bearshare, limewire, etc.)

cobra89 ,

Do you think the homeless and hungry are the only people who steal?

High end crime happens ALL the time, and it's not out of necessity, it's out of the human condition of greed. Theft happens more often by rich individuals than it does by poor.

cobra89 ,

Exactly, those terms are not mutually exclusive to corporate bean counters.

cobra89 ,

Typically lifted trucks that are supposed to "look cool" like they're capable of offroading, but would get stuck the moment they actually went off road.

cobra89 ,

Nah fuck that, that's not a deterrent and businesses will just see that as the cost of doing business. They should be forced to refund everyone for the entire game no questions asked. There was no disclaimer when purchasing this game that says "we may completely disable this game and render it useless, even single player, on short notice at any time." What are you supposed to do, buy the game, then read the terms of service and maybe interpret it as them having the ability to do that and then return the game? Absolute BS.

I don't think any reasonable consumer would purchase a game if they knew it could be made completely unplayable in the next 3 months. Which is exactly what happened here. It was still on sale in December and was shut down in March...

This puts undue hardship on the consumer to make sure they're not getting ripped off and there's not even a clear way to be able to do that. This is the exact situation regulations are for.

cobra89 ,

Dude straight up looks like Voldemort.

cobra89 ,

Lol again, everyone in this community loves to call The Verge corporate shills but then has no problem upvoting and commenting on posts like these. Like if the Verge were truly biased by corporate interests, wouldn't an article like this be the place most ripe for that bias to show through and be a problem?

I get that the community is not a hive mind and is made up of many different people, but on posts where people are criticizing the Verge because they don't like the way they show the corporate viewpoint you'd be drowned out completely if you were to argue anything otherwise. The irony just kills me.

cobra89 ,

I mean it is but it isn't. I think Nilay wanted to get the Verge back at the top of the search engine results but also wanted to make a point about why he had to do it. It's funny because it's really 2 paragraphs about it and then the rest of it is a normal article about the best printer lol. And the fun Gemini thing thrown in.

cobra89 ,

Yeah I feel like they neglected to show how much more of a problem on iOS this is than Android.

On Android apps typically have their push notifications divided into different types and can almost always turn off the marketing notifications for an app while leaving the important ones on.

I dont see even half of these notifications on Android.

Please, for the love of God, VOTE! (pawb.social)

I don't like Biden either, but anyone with half a brain knows there are two choices in the 2020 election. If we had a sane voting system, voting third party might be worth it, but as it stands, no one but you knows your favorite candidate exists and unless you want to become their campaign manager that will still be true in...

cobra89 ,

When morons like you throw around the word fascist it loses all meaning. Fucking too busy calling Biden a fascist to prevent the actual fascist from gaining office. The irony is palpable.

cobra89 ,

What kills me are the people whose preferred form of government is not currently the most popular form of government somehow think that after a revolution that their preferred form of government will win out. They're delusional. In most cases the government gets worse, much worse, before it gets better.

cobra89 ,

I'm sure Billie Joe would agree with you. He's always been a real one.

cobra89 ,

They're working just as hard as the people above them

Woah woah woah, let's not get out of hand here. We all know they're working way harder than the people above them.

cobra89 ,

I just assumed the option for normal difficulty was to the left and that's why the image is weirdly cropped like that.

There is a gap between the male and female grouping and the hardcore. This is what leads me to believe that the hardcore option is in a different grouping, probably horizontal grouping which is why I think the normal difficulty is to the left.

Well seeing only 15% of the screen it's hard to say. Could make design sense or could be bad design, or I could be wrong.

196 Stands with Palestine, but those of you in the US should still vote in the general election.

I've been seeing a lot of anti-voting sentiment going around. Can't believe I have to say this, but you need to vote. Not only is there more to the election than just the president. (State policy, Senate, house), but not voting is not an act of protest. C'mon guys

cobra89 ,

Thank you. So tired of people who never vote in primaries complaining about how the candidates are bad.

cobra89 ,

While I agree with communism in theory, some of the language on the page regarding revolution is problematic IMO and is not going to gain the party any favors.

Also some of the stuff they have listed on the site is pretty hilarious:

The German Revolutions in 1918 and 1923, and the British General Strike in 1926, show us that even in the economic powerhouses of capitalism, the contradictions of capitalism cannot be fundamentally overcome. In fact, in 1968, the largest revolutionary general strike in history shook France. This was a country that had been lauded for its high living standards, and it occurred during a period of economic upswing!

Literally every example they list of "the contradictions of capitalism cannot be fundamentally overcome" is an example of a country that is still capitalist lol. (Maybe because the real life examples of communism objectively haven't turned out that great.) So they've continued to overcome them. And sure you can argue a country like France has a lot of socialist programs and legislation but it's certainly still a capitalist country.

Define "good" ping. (Latency is the proper term)

Edit: Nvm, just saw your other comment. 50ms isn't bad.

30ms+ is high for cable in my experience. I was getting routinely in the high teens and low 20s.

On fiber I get less than 10ms.

cobra89 ,

Just FYI steam compresses the data and shows the throughput with compression so the number will be higher than your actual download bandwidth.

cobra89 ,

I guess OP never uses ATMs, because I'm pretty sure every ATM I've ever seen uses Windows Embedded.

Did everyone gloss over the part where she was drunk?!?

Whilst in hospital, Casey provided a sample of blood which was tested for alcohol content and found to be over the legal limit for driving.

How she only got 20 months of jail time is beyond me... Also were all the relatives in the car children? I'm assuming so because otherwise why were they letting her drive?!?

cobra89 ,

Couldn't agree more. If you make the decision to drive drunk and then injure someone you should never be allowed to drive ever again.

I liken drinking and driving to attempted murder because you very well could murder someone doing that. The fact that the penalties are so low is why this keeps happening.

If you risked 20 years in prison every time you drink and drive it would happen a lot less. This is pretty much the one instance where I think the fear of punishment should out-prioritize rehabilitation because the act is just so egregious and preventable.

It's a good thing you answered truthfully. Cannabis affects the way anesthesia works so they may not have given you enough if you had lied and said no.

PSA to anyone getting any sort of anesthetic/anesthesia. Always be truthful about your marijuana use.

    cobra89 ,

Except that's not how this works if you were ever in a position to actually verify employment. Every company ever will specifically tell their employees to just confirm whether or not the person used to work there and that's it.

Anything else opens the company up to a lawsuit for slander. The employee is already gone. No company is going to risk a lawsuit just to warn another company of a bad employee.

    cobra89 ,

But then the company doesn't get to charge you 1500% markup on the cost of it every couple weeks/months so it'll never happen.

    cobra89 ,

If there was a maintenance issue, why did they sit on the tarmac for over 3 hours instead of returning to the gate? If they weren't able to taxi then get a damn tug.

No excuse to leave passengers sitting on the tarmac for over 3 hours with no air or water. In fact in the US it's illegal, not sure what Mexico's laws are.

Sounds like Aeromexico needs to review their policies that allowed this to happen.

    cobra89 ,

We're past that, January should be 3/4 filled.

    cobra89 ,

The point is to normalize not working extra hours so companies stop expecting it. It's not anti-worker at all.

    cobra89 ,

InB4 "If everyone returned their shopping carts it would eliminate jobs" idiots come into the thread.

    cobra89 ,

Nah, yours is the dumb take. I guess returning your 3D glasses at the end of a movie is too much "unpaid labor" for you. How about cleaning up your table at a restaurant that doesn't have servers? I guess you just leave the mess sitting there huh?

    cobra89 ,

While I agree the problem as written is ambiguous and should be written with explicit operators, I have 1 argument to make. In pretty much every other field if we have a question the answer pretty much always ends up being something along the lines of "well the experts do this" or "this professor at this prestigious university says this", or "the scientific community says". The fact that this article even states that academic circles and "scientific" calculators use strong juxtaposition, while basic education and basic calculators use weak juxtaposition is interesting. Why do we treat math differently than pretty much every other field? Shouldn't strong juxtaposition be the precedent and the norm then just how the scientific community sets precedents for literally every other field? We should start saying weak juxtaposition is wrong and just settle on one.

This has been my devil's advocate argument.
