This brought me memories. In college I had a Dell Mini with Intel atom 1st get. It was useless to run engineering apps like matlab or solidworks

I installed OSx86 and those apps ran a lot better using parallels than running natively on Windows, I was even able to play some games on it

criticon ,

Installed Mint last week after a ~10 year hiatus from using Linux (other than Debian on RPi)

I was surprised at how everything just works, even my network HP all-in-one worked after a simple "search for printer" and it also added it as a scanner without any input from me. In windows I had to install HPsmart software, login every few days for some reason and then some days it just refuses to work altogether

I also connected it to my home theater and I was able to set up 5.1 sound without any additional installations. In windows it took me several hours to fix this and sometimes the link between the laptop and the HT would be cut for some reason in the middle of a movie and I had to restart everything

criticon ,

Do you? I don't own any apple device but I was able to reset the password on my very old account to use apple tv+ on my LG TV

criticon ,

I think Mexico too, or at least the paper name is "carta" and "oficio" which would translate to letter and legal (kinda)

criticon ,

Samsung's replacement is $90 if done at a service center, so it was more expensive to buy the parts (because they included the screen for some reason)

criticon ,

I think I'll do the same. I wasn't switching because of compatibility but I realized that there are only 1 or 2 apps that don't run natively and I don't use them that often

Which distro do you recommend? I haven't used linux in a while, I usually went with ubuntu but I think that's not the go-to anymore?

criticon ,

It's a laptop with i3 gen 11, 12GB RAM, and I mainly use it for browsing, torrenting and watching movies (4K, connected to a TV)

criticon , (edited )

Looks good! I'll give it a try this weekend, thanks!

Edit: I just installed it, it looks great! I find it very funny that one of the apps I was worried about was the HP scanner and it worked seamlessly on mint without installing additional drivers or apps so I can stop using that stupid HP app

Edit2: I also found out that my windows installation (system, drivers, updates, other files that I cannot delete safely) takes about 70Gb out of my 250GB SSD, even after running many commands to try to clean it up

criticon ,

Of course they do. They sell them equally expensive without the expensive ingredients!

criticon ,

If it opened on the default browser it would be several times less infuriating, but clicking on anything by mistake and then waiting for Edge to open with all the prompts because you never use it makes me furious

My last name ends with ar so I tried to get a .ar domain to setup a personalized email but it seems like they are reserved for government stuff, I was only allowed to get .com.ar (last time I checked this was about 4 years ago)

criticon ,

This is me in Michigan right now. I'm debating whether to drive South to Ohio instead

criticon ,

Yeah my company sets a goal of how many you need to report every year, if you don't then you need to take mandatory training (same if you fail and click on a link)

criticon ,

No need for safari, I use that option in chrome and firefox. I created an account just for lurking and use desktop mode and it "works", at least it stopped bothering to get the app or restricting content because I wasn't logged in

criticon ,

Lol it's not, it's just what you are used to

criticon ,

0-100F is not base 10 at all, it's just what you grew up with. I grew with Celsius and I can easily feel the difference in a few degrees. TV weather people saying that the temp will be in the 80s is less useful to me than if they tell me if it will be 27°C for example

Why would you do ±1°C if the sous vide can do decimals?

Also, the recipe calls for 130°F because it was made by an American, if you look for European recipes it will probably say 54°C. Neither will add decimals to their recipes because that's just being anal

I use F in the kitchen a lot because most of my appliances work in that and also because I basically learn to cook until I moved to the US, so again, what you are used to

criticon ,

In my case it's the AC units that ruin it for me. We have nice weather that would cool the apartment if we open the windows but if some of the closest neighbors has their unit on it makes it unbearable for the rest

Getting the windows ME installation disks (floppys) was how I started learning my way around computers. I could experiment with the registry and other files and if I broke something I could just to re install the OS

criticon ,

Our first laser was also an HP and it worked great for many years until windows 7 stopped supporting it, I tried a lot of drivers but I couldn't find any that made it print correctly. I eventually found that it still worked with Linux so I connected it to an old computer and ran a server thru it and it worked for many more years until some part broke and the replacement part was more expensive thana be one, or so we though because we had to change printers another 3 times since because they break a lot quicker now

What kind of Japanese teacher cannot explain the -ne?

Hacking the Vita is equally easy

I was about to pay for NSO extra or whatever is calledt o play Game Boy games then I realized I could do that with the Vita I had collecting dust

Super easy to install emulators and super easy to install "back ups"

You can even use an adapter to use high capacity microSD cards and avoid the ridiculous prices of the propietary cards

criticon ,

The only time I used it was when a hotel wifi was blocking access to my VPN but Google's worked fine

criticon ,

Do they actually slow it down? I have 8GB of data and many months I use a lot more than that and they send me some messages that they will slow it with some links to purchase more data but it never happens, or at least not in a noticeable way

It's Not Safe to Click Links on X (lifehacker.com)

As noted by security researcher Will Dormann, some posts on X purport to lead to a legitimate website, but actually redirect somewhere else. In Dormann's example, an advertisement posted by a verified X user claims to lead to forbes.com. When Dormann clicks the link, however, it takes him to a different link to open a Telegram...

Was torrent available (or common) during those speeds? I remember napster/kazaa/limeware and downloading stuff like green day.exe

I started using torrents when I already had broadband, although very asymmetrical

That's why they do "Bible studies", so they only read the good parts while also interpreting them to their convenience

Amazon Subscribe & Save percentages not adding up (lemmy.ml)

I only needed one more item to "unlock extra savings up to 15%", so I added an extra item to see what the savings would be. I didn't think the savings matched what was advertised, so I removed an item to see what the difference was (making sure to screenshot before/after this time). Turns out the price of 3 out of 4 items is the...

I find it cheaper and more effective to subscribe and use the initial coupon (usually 25% off), then immediately cancel the subscription after they ship it. Most likely there will be another coupon next time I need the product

The only thing I had as a really reocurring subscription was my cat's kibble but then I noticed that on some deliveries the price was considerably higher so I switched to buying it at the store market

That reminds me that a friend had the DVD of Trainspotting next to his TV but I read it as Transtopping and I was very curious about the premise of the movie

This recipe uses heavy cream instead of whole milk (I think, I was trying to read behind the "please log in" pop up)

Mine has crashed every day during meetings now and 3 times it took the audio driver with it so I had to do a full restart before being able to re join

    I have a flight in a MAX 7 in a couple of weeks. 🙃

That plane hasn't even been certified. I guess Aeromexico got a good deal on planes that were supposed to be delivered to Southwest

    criticon ,

I noticed recently that Google has been ignoring my commands sporadically on Mobile. They still work if I switch to desktop mode tho

    criticon ,

    I hate that

On the occasion I don't give a 5 or 10 or whatever is the max I explain in the comments that n is perfection and very difficult to achieve but n-1 is still very good, but I also never give less than max to the employee, I apply your same logic (disregard the survey)

We had a priest teacher (Catholic school) and he kept saying that being gay was an aberration

We couldn't hold it and we told him that there's lots of gay animals, but the only aberration was being celibate. He got so angry that he tried to expell all of us, but he ended up being replaced
