I have that in my ICE car and I never use it (map of gas stations correlated with remaining fuel). That's not specific to an EV.

Any of those features can be in a smartphone attached to your dashboard. Sure you have some benefits in accessing the car data, but they are small.

erwan ,

Luckily not even the Cybertruck is immune to those

erwan ,

My car (Citroën) has a contact less key, I don't have to get it out of my pocket and the car automatically opens.

But it still includes a small physical key to open the car when the battery (of the car or key) is dead.

erwan ,

GOOG-411 was created specifically for Google to gather voice samples, with different ages, accents, etc. to train voice recognition. It was never for the sake of providing a service.

erwan ,

In France if you have a parking spot, you have a legal right to get a plug there even if you're renting.

It doesn't fix the problem for people with no parking who do only street parking, but people who can't afford a parking spot rarely buy a shiny new EV to start with.

erwan ,

In France installing a charger in appartement building is mandatory if the resident asks for it, even if they're renting.

erwan ,

Just buy one if you need. I don't understand people who prefer forced bundles over deciding what to buy.

Unless you think an included charger is free. It's not, it's factored in the price.

erwan ,

Use Firefox if you want but don't donate to Mozilla. Money doesn't go to Firefox development anyway.

Also if they can afford to pay their CEO $3 millions a year, they don't need your donations.

It's probably replacing garbage written by humans that nobody was reading either.

So in this case, garbage content that nobody reads, AI is probably a good idea.

I banned my daughter from using the iPhone she bought. It made her a better person | Em Rio (www.theguardian.com)

I think its not just kids anymore, it's adults too. Everyone is glued to their screens these days. But kids are more vulnerable to influences from "social" media and don't have any defences to the psychological warfare going on. Of course they feel like shit.

erwan ,

Read the article. Her mom agreed to it, and they set rules. It's after that that it went bad.

erwan ,

Just read to the top comment saying it's profitable to replace them anyway.

erwan ,

It's still a good joke!

erwan ,

You can deploy open source software or your own apps even on big tech infrastructure, on your own domain.

The problem isn't infrastructure, it's that access to content isn't decentralized any more. Access to content is reliant on Google search or social media algorithms (who decide what to promote).

erwan ,

If she's been flagged as shoplifter she's probably black!

erwan ,

Because the algorithm trying to identify shoplifters is probably trained on biased dataset

Linus Tech Tips (LTT) release investigation results on former accusations (x.com)

There were a series of accusations about our company last August from a former employee. Immediately following these accusations, LMG hired Roper Greyell - a large Vancouver-based law firm specializing in labor and employment law, to conduct a third-party investigation. Their website describes them as “one of the largest...

erwan ,

I just don't like Linus because he's annoying and abuses clickbait thumbnails and titles.

Some of their videos (from other people than himself) are good, but usually I'll avoid LTT content all together.

For that reason I'm not really sure what happened, and I don't really care.

erwan ,

Maybe, whatever. It's just too annoying for me to click on that shit.

erwan ,

And it was overpriced. I can see people buying a useless toy for 50 bucks, but not for $700.

erwan ,

10 years ago it was "how do we convince Google to buy this company?"

iPhones And Androids Can Now Warn You of 'Secret Trackers' (www.ibtimes.co.uk)

In a collaborative effort, Apple and Google have developed an industry-standard detection feature called "Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers" (DULT) for Bluetooth trackers. This standard allows users on iOS and Android devices to be alerted if an unknown Bluetooth tracker is monitoring their location.

erwan ,

Yes that part is clear, but the question is about the collateral damage on legitimate usage.

erwan ,

In some languages (like French) "I wonder" is said like "I ask myself". So I think it's a translation mistake.

erwan ,

Especially coming from Google, who was one of the good guys pushing open standards and interoperability.

erwan ,

There is also the issue of determining if a given image is real or AI. If AI were legal, that means prosecution would need to prove images are real and not AI with the risk of letting go real offenders.

The need to ban AI CSAM is even clearer than cartoon CSAM.

erwan ,

Crypto means cryptography, stop using it to talk about cryptocurrency.

erwan ,

Crypto currencies doesn't mean "hidden currency", it means currency based on cryptography.

erwan ,

IANAL but probably not

erwan ,

They want us to believe it was by accident but I'm pretty sure it wasn't.

erwan ,

They asked her already and she refused.

erwan ,

It worked because the web was much smaller.

erwan ,

It's weird that backups got deleted immediately. I would imagine they get marked for deletion but really deleted something like a month later to prevent this kind of issue.

Maybe even this discussion is involving both teenagers and adults

    erwan ,

OK, generative AI isn't machine learning.

But to get back to what AI is, the definition has been moving forever as AI becomes "just software" when it becomes ubiquitous. People were shocked that machines could calculate, then that they can play chess better than humans, then that they can read handwriting...

The first mistake have been to invent the term to start with, as it implies thinking machine but they're not.

Or as Dijkstra puts it: "asking whether a machine can think is as dumb as asking if a submarine can swim".

    erwan ,

We kinda started already, Mars is inhabited by robots already.

    erwan ,

Trains suck if you don't have frequency, and because of the population density with a good frequency more than half of the trains will be completely empty and the rest almost empty.

    erwan ,

OK, it's 2pm. With this system, you call a pod and ride it. With a rural train, you check the schedule and see that the next train is at 5pm. And you have to plan your trip back as well. Great, time to take your car.

And you might say "let's have trains run at least once per hour then". That means running empty trains all day, not sure it's the best way to spend public money.

    erwan ,

Obviously if the pods take 2h to arrive it's not worth it

    erwan ,

The population in rural areas is so low that no matter how you induce demand, it won't work.

    erwan ,

Yes, I mean how many companies get their brand turned into a verb?

    erwan ,

Let's call people who grow up with X the "X gen".

    erwan ,

Just because it's not a completely new concept doesn't mean it's stupid.

It can bring value even if it's a small iterative innovation over existing buses.

    erwan ,

It might not be fake but companies built on top of the OpenAI API don't bring significant value and won't last.

If you already have a solid product and want to add some AI capabilities, the the OpenAI API is great. If it's your only value proposition, not so much.

    erwan ,

It started this way tho, people renting a room or a couch in their home. Pretty quickly it became either full units or rooms in a share appartement with other AirBnB guests.

iPad Pro with M4 chip boasts impressive performance jump compared to just-released M3 MacBook Air (9to5mac.com)

On raw performance might, the M4 really does live up to Apple’s promises, should deliver. Single core is up about 20% compared to all M3 chips and more than 40% compared to M2. The generational computational leap from the previous M2 iPad Pro is at least a 42% jump on single-core and multi-core.

    erwan ,

The performances is not inherent to ARM, x86 can definitely catch up to this.

Apple crushes creativity and its reputation in new iPad ad (www.theregister.com)

The ad itself depicted a mechanical crusher destroying artifacts of human creativity. A trumpet, guitar, sculpture, piano, drawing board, paints, a metronome, several analog cameras, a turntable, and hi-fi equipment were among the much-loved items yielding to the machine's unstoppable force.

    erwan ,

It's little things like that that add up and move a brand reputation one way or the other.

    erwan ,

Or simply squish them like they were rubber instead of destroying them.

    erwan ,

That's the crux of the problem: they'll make it so you can't (as for any other celebrity) but there is a high risk that the safeguards can be circumvented.

    erwan ,

Sounds just like the Rick and Morty episode "Night Family".

    Went great for them!
