It's the natural evolution of SMS. And SMS does what no messaging app does, it lets me send a text message to any mobile number without having to wonder whether the other party has installed the same app as me.

That's the problem that everyone shouting "parents need to parent better" here is ignoring.

If you cut off access to the group chat, her friends are not going to call her daily on your landline (that maybe you don't have) to exchange gossips. What will happen is that she'll be out of the loop, isolated from the group. When they're planning an afternoon out they might forget to tell her.

You can't make your kids live in a 90's bubble, because when we were kids in the 90's we had friends living like us. Cut off your kid from messenging and you cut them from their friends and isolate to them from their age class.

That's absolutely not good for them, and it's not good parenting.

(Not talking about you comment parent BTW, your parenting is fine, I'm just responding to your comment to address all those saying it's just parents' fault)

The problem is those family sets the standard for everyone.

In middle school it started from poor family who can't afford other activities than handing down their old smartphone, then the percentage grew to the point not giving a smartphone to your kid means he's isolated from the group.

Smartphone messaging apps are the way kids communicate nowadays, and if your kid is not in the group chat he/she is isolated.

With a phone, no pin code. With a smartwatch either, and that's my preferred way. No need to pull anything out of my pocket.

It's not a lusty image if nobody knows what the full picture looks like. Hence the reference to the Streisand effect.

What I'm not seeing in this thread is the reason why this picture is so over used.

One reason is that it's the perfect image to test graphics manipulation algorithms like compression for example. It has all the characteristics you want to check for: various textures, gradients, lightening... It's like the benchy (3d printing) of image compression.

The other reason is that once it established itself as the reference image, it was easier for researchers to compare algorithms and make sure the author doesn't cheat by cherry picking a picture where his algorithm is clearly better.

Researchers were used to see the common pitfalls of compressions algorithms on this image (the fur for example).

You can argue that owning a piece of a company who generates value is not the same thing as owning some useless cryptographic token.

The cryptographic token is not because it's too volatile and transactions are costly.

There is a reason the only things using Bitcoin as an actual currency are illegal things, buying credit card numbers or paying for ransomware.

It failed because they didn't give it enough time to succeed. Google had enough money to invest in Stadia at a loss for many years until it eventually succeeds, but instead they just confirmed their image of randomly cancelling products.
