fmstrat ,

Thank you for typing out my brain squiggles.

fmstrat ,

This is how battery tech should be unveiled. Specs. Comparable specs.

fmstrat ,

alias cf=cd

Note: I don't actually do this. I'm not a monster.

fmstrat ,

Yup, have to contribute via patches in email. That was a fun experience.

fmstrat ,

Codeberg ft[real]w. FOSS based nonprofit.

fmstrat ,

Report her to the store for solicitation. Owners hate that, even if they agree with the sentiment. Can't scare away the customers.

fmstrat ,

They are saying comment OP is blaming the user for using Discord, not Discord.

fmstrat ,

True but any other company with the size to do so would chuck the request in the trash until the court orders came.

fmstrat ,

If your brother shifted to Bitwarden, and is likely a lemmy user, I'd trust his opinions, too.

fmstrat ,

Boy is flexing and checking out his own bicep.

fmstrat ,

FOSS does not mean there are no business interests. Think about Mozilla Firefox, Postgres, RedHat, etc.

fmstrat ,

There are no known reports of those versions being incorporated into any production releases for major Linux distributions

...

A stable release of Arch Linux is also affected.

... BTW.

fmstrat ,

Same camp, and know bash very, very, well. Crazy how you can always learn.

fmstrat ,

Yea, people don't like it simply because they're not used to it.

For instance, Cntrl-A, select all. Cntrl-Shift-A is a way more intuitive way to deselect all.

It's the same reason people complain about OnlyOffice, which is stellar.

fmstrat ,

OnlyOffice is much better IMO. Local or web, integrates with Nextcloud, and has very good office compatibility, even with fonts.

fmstrat ,

I switched, never looked back. It's so much better for me.

fmstrat , (edited )

I wish I could set up multiple feeds of overlapping communities, and then filter them (without multi-account).

This would allow me to read the feed I was in the mood for. Tagging would certainly help, but the per-feed filter is key.

Ah the days of RSS...

fmstrat ,

The things people will deal with to not talk to a human being. It has probably taken longer to post/respond in this thread than the time it would take to actually solve the problem.

I made wanderer - a self-hosted trail and GPS track database (lemmy.world)

Over the last two months, I developed wanderer. It is a self-hosted alternative to sites like alltrails.com or in other words a self-hosted trail database. It started out more as a small hobby project to teach myself some new technologies but in the end, I decided to develop it into a fully-fledged application....

fmstrat ,

Fittrackee has been what I use instead of Strava. Also FOSS.

fmstrat ,

This is ripe for multiuser and federation

fmstrat ,

It will be monetized at some point. It's free data and people are scraping it. Google will inject ads via Chrome until people move to another browser, who knows. Capitalism always finds a way.

fmstrat ,

Depends on if branding takes lead. There is a reason people use Chrome instead of Chromium. Nginx is a prime example, 99% of people think their server less hosting is some special AWS branded product, and not Kubernetes and Nginx they could run on a VM for a fraction of the cost.

fmstrat ,

$5 a month on Linode and it takes <60 minutes all in if you familiarize yourself with Docker. This is the way.

Better yet, spin up a secondary container with OnlyOffice and you get something more compatible with Office365 than even Google has.

fmstrat ,

Just pointing out your response may be dated. Docker can run rootless: https://docs.docker.com/engine/security/rootless/

fmstrat ,

Agreed. Honesly I use docker like snap these days. Need a specific version of node?

alias node="docker run --rm -ti -v '${PWD}:${PWD}' -w '${PWD}' node:16-alpine"

alias npm="docker run --rm -ti -v '${PWD}:${PWD}' -w '${PWD}' node:16-alpine npm"

Pretty much every CLI tool that isn't super basic to install I do this with.

fmstrat ,

Yea, I contribute to a bunch of own source projects, so it makes it easy to jump around without conflicts. Also great for random stuff like youtube-dl, or esphome, etc, that you use once in a while. Just slap the aliases in my bashrc.

Google fires employee who protested Israel tech event, as internal dissent mounts (www.cnbc.com)

During a keynote speech in New York on Monday from the managing director of Google’s Israel business, an employee in the company’s cloud division protested publicly, proclaiming “I refuse to build technology that powers genocide.”...

fmstrat ,

But.. Nose diving is exactly what happened not too many yeas ago.

fmstrat ,

You don't get ahead by working hard, and you don't get ahead by working smart to benefit the company, you get ahead by working smart to benefit yourself.

There is a bit too much "my situation fits all" here. Startup vs big corp, private vs government, thoughtful management vs not, etc. Other people will also recognize this mentality. Can't say "eat the rich" because they only do what's good for them, then do the same (yes, that's extreme).

You should benefit the company, and they should benefit you. I take your point to mean this equation should be balanced (which unfortunately it usually isn't), vs the specific words above.

AI-generated content and other unfavorable practices have put longtime staple CNET on Wikipedia's blacklisted sources (www.tomshardware.com)

In the wave of AI controversies and lawsuits, CNET has been publicly admonished since it first started posting thinly-veiled AI-generated content on its site in late 2022— a scandal that has culminated in the site being demoted from Trusted to Untrusted Sources on Wikipedia....

fmstrat ,

Wikipedia's pay distribution is actually quite even. The C suite make much, much less than other companies. While I havent been able to confirm this, one article said they hold larger than usual sums of money, likely to pay salaries off interest, and look to donations for replenishment.

fmstrat ,

Newspapers are reducing in size and scope, not pumping out AI garbage.

"I'm retiring soon, time to milk this for what it's worth." is not the thought going through most newspaper editorial departments right now.

Another successful OpenBSD setup

I've been buying these little boxes from AliExpress for years to use as firewalls and routers. My oldest one is almost 9 years old now! OpenBSD installs just fine. Just a BIOS tweak to always boot up after power is restored.

@selfhosted

fmstrat ,

I have one of these with PFSense on it. Works great, but when I had it in a hot room I had to zip tie a 120mm fan to it 😀

fmstrat ,

Yea mine was hung on the wall with an air gap, still needed the fan hah

fmstrat ,

Don't forget the "named tea" at the end

fmstrat ,

Why do people agree to this? An hour assignment after speaking with someone is one thing, biut I had a couple of companies ask for homework before meeting anyone. Just didn't respond. Teach them it's not OK.

fmstrat ,

While funny, it wasn't intended as a burn. They are reporting on events that happened at Twitter, because it was named Twitter when these things happened, and is now called X.

fmstrat ,

It's been said before: Google does not find you the best result for your query. Google finds you the result that makes them the most money from AdSense and has words from your query.

If Mozilla wasn't funded by Google, the best thing they could do is include a helpful/unhelpful ranking for websites, then filter Google results by that. Search should be social, not commercial.

fmstrat ,

Potentially, but there is a reason adding "Reddit" to the end of a search is so common. It's basically up-voted search results.

fmstrat ,

Did he actually nuke it? Or did the user leave? The article doesn't mention the Blusky post from LN.
