Civ 5 sunk it's teeth into me deep. I could never stand 6. I only managed about 41 hours into 6, but 5 I have well over a thousand in (even if steam only reports 600 of it)

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

The switch does it really weirdly too.

You have to disconnect from wifi so it can create it's own hotspot, you connect your phone to that connection, then it hosts a little web server where you can open it up and download your shit.

I mean I guess it's better than xbox or playstations method which I honestly have no figured out yet. Not that I've really tried.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Upload to what though? I want it on my phone or my computer.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Those features don't mean shit if you can't use a modern OS after a couple of years.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

you can just generically compile the kernel

Not always. I have numerous old now useless SBCs that never merged their shit with the mainline linux kernel so my only option is to run something 10+ years old.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

(also some cars have integrated tracking)

Pretty much every single car made in the last 5 years has it. And it's been in cars starting in the 90s so just because your car is a 2015 doesn't mean it's safe.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

This is why I’ve gone back to windows on the machines I care about and don’t plan on going back. Open source software is cool, but it also kinda sucks. I’ll use Linux all day on servers. But my primary desktop is windows and my secondary desktop is Mac OS and I doubt that’s changing any time soon.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Why 30 years from now?

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

You can already easily manufacture your own firearm with a combination of 3D printers and some metal working tools. Or just buy the barrel pre made and that's 99% the effort.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

“grapheneOS trolls are downvoting every single post and comment of mine, and committing vote manipulation on Lemmy. They are using 5-6 accounts.”

Is that really criticism of graphene os? or is it complaining about specific users who like graphene os?

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

It would be good for playing old XP era games or hardware. But for modern tasks?

Yeah no, that P4 wastes way too much power to be useful for anything.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

I like how people on lemmy seem to only think of the high stakes state sponsored theft. And not the theft that’s thousands of times more common.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Does your GPU properly support ray tracing acceleration? If it does (and it has the vram) the hit is not that bad for any reasonable level of raytracing.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Is that FH5? I've never had it change the video settings of the game after a driver update. Do you have the stupid automatically set video settings according to what nvidia thinks is good turned on?

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

To be fair “optimizing for your PC” is just compiling shaders. It does that every time your drivers update. The video setting change is down to Nvidia being really stupid.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

before joining a domain.

You do it essentially while joining the domain. If you hit the "work" option instead of "home" it immediately goes to a "sign into your domain" screen.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

I like how they chose a phone wireless charging for their "super fast and efficient" charging article.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Waking from hibernation is sooo much slower than waking from sleep. Apple silicon macs are very efficient in their S0 standby so they'll go days before entering hibernation. Kinda odd that they bring that up now that Apple has fully transitioned to ARM machines where this isn't really an issue. That said S0 standby on this 2019 Macbook I have for work is dogshit.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Gnome is a little too minimal and ends up being kinda difficult to use because of it. Especially when you're used to windows. I tried it again for like a week when Ubuntu 24 came out and said "fuck this shit" and installed KDE.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Yes, it's been back gnome for like 6 years now.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

The Intel MacBook waking up from hibernation is about 30 seconds to get to the login prompt, 30 seconds for the login prompt to actually work, then 10-15 seconds after entering the password to get to a usable desktop environment with the wifi generally connecting within that window. It's now awful, but traditional S1-3 standby was so much better. S0 standby is great if you're frequently opening and closing the device, but is unusable on higher power devices.

But that's with only 8 gigs of ram on this MacBook, the more ram the longer it takes. The 32 gigs of ram in my actual work laptop (ThinkPad P1 11th gen i9) takes about a minute to wake from hibernation, and like 2 minutes for it to fully get situated. If I do that on battery that's about 3-5% of my battery just waking from hibernation.

The iPhone 15 has been out for over half a year now and people still spread this FUD. The iPhone 15 does nothing special with its USB C port.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Every iPhone has been expensive on release. As time goes on more and more people get newer and newer phones. And what was new and expensive becomes cheap and available.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

It's Tesla. It's always going to be a OTA update.

I'm sure they'll find a way to OTA update hardware issues.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

I’m still not used to asrock being a brand people take seriously. Then again I’m not used to Asus not be good.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

The owner, known only as "Bdesign"

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

They also just kinda look dated.

Also Rolls Royce, Bently, and Maybach still have them.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

You could be a douche and get a .io domain.

I'd just peruse your preferred domain registrar's cheap domains and find one that tickles your fancy. Odds are the domain will cost more than what you'd get in donations unless people REALLY like your service and it gets popular.

> 100 watt hours and you can't take that battery on a plane in the US.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Open (and distributed) and private are two very difficult things to intermingle. You can mitigate some issues, but at the end of the day the two ideas have to butt against each other.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Blockchains are the antithesis of anonymity. Pseudo anonymity isn't anonymity, it just doesn't scream your name out there from the get go.

Microsoft starts bundling Windows 11 with its 'PC optimizer' app in some regions (www.neowin.net)

PC optimizers are not a new concept, and they have been around for quite a while. Nowadays, many consider them unnecessary, but having an official program made by Microsoft that is capable of (allegedly) speeding up your PC may sound quite appealing....

"reduce ads and pop-up interruptions,"

But not theirs, only others where they don't get paid for it.

Linus Tech Tips (LTT) release investigation results on former accusations (x.com)

There were a series of accusations about our company last August from a former employee. Immediately following these accusations, LMG hired Roper Greyell - a large Vancouver-based law firm specializing in labor and employment law, to conduct a third-party investigation. Their website describes them as “one of the largest...

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

We paid for someone to investigate ourselves and coincidentally they found nothing?

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

The hate from this community towards LTT is extreme and unfounded.

Are you just going to ignore Linus and the companies abhorrent response to the situation? That alone should make anyone lose any respect they had for them.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Why? Only hardcore computer nerds would ever want that.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Imagine if the gasoline companies one day announced that they will be changing gas so only cars bought in the last 5 years or so could refuel.

They've already effectively did this, and by they I mean the US government mandated it. 5% ethanol has been mandated since 2006, and 10% since 2012. If your car is too old (lots of 90s cars) you'll have to find a gas station that has ethanol free fuel.

Louis Rossman probably has a 40+ MN long rant on this somewhere on his channel.

What doesn't he have a 40+ minute long rant on?

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Crime has been trending downwards for decades now. We had a bump around the pandemic for fairly obvious reasons, but it's been back to trending downwards again.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Because they want a backup of their data, and cloud backups are convenient?

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

To be fair this is also a translation layer and not an emulator.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

The 68k to PPC transition was rough though. It wasn't until system 8 that Mac OS on a PPC mac was fully PPC code. But that was also a much different Apple that's nothing like the Apple of today.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

S0 standby is borderline unusable on many PCs. On Apple silicon macs it's damn near flawless.

My current laptop is probably the last machine to support S3 standby and I do not look forward to replacing it and being forced back into a laptop that overheats and crashes in my backpack in less than 15 minutes. On my basic T14 it works ok for the most part, but my full fat Thinkpad P1 with an i9 is in S0 standby for longer than a few minutes, and sometimes uses more power than when it was fully on. Maybe Meteor lake with it's LP E cores will fix this but I doubt it.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Maybe their goal is to bury that prism and hope people forget?

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

That's assuming the writer knows what they're talking about. Last line from the second paragraph:

Windows 11 has similar translation capabilities, and with the Windows 11 24H2 update, that app translation technology is getting a name: Prism.

And first line from the third paragraph.

Microsoft says that Prism isn’t just a new name for the same old translation technology.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

If you have actual work to do then I would HIGHLY suggest not doing it on your main machine. Give it a month on a secondary machine before giving up. If you install it on a Friday night and come Sunday night it's still not working fully you're gonna go back to Windows and never go back.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Oh don't worry, if this isn't already in 10 I'm sure they'll be bringing it over shortly.

Firefox 126: New Search Data Telemetry, Improved Copy Without Site Tracking, Security Fixes, and More (www.mozilla.org)

Telemetry was added to create an aggregate count of searches by category to broadly inform search feature development. These categories are based on 20 high-level content types, such as "sports,” "business," and "travel". This data will not be associated with specific users and will be collected using OHTTP to remove IP...

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

To know what features people are using, how fast it's running, know what hardware and where it's being used, and to try to investigate crashing issues? Telemetry doesn't only mean knowing where you live or who you're banging.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Anecdotally cheap Chinese EVs are all over Costa Rica and even there they’re generally known to be garbage. Like how do you get a fairly car rusty in Costa Rica? Even if you live exclusively on the beach you’d have to have some really bad paint and 0 rust prevention done.
