General Motors accidentally made a good car so that's why they had to kill it.

I was explaining to my daughter about the differences between Gimp and Photoshop and saw that Adobe had a page that claimed to compare the two. It never compares the two. It barely mentions Gimp. (www.adobe.com)

I expected ridiculous propaganda from Adobe, but they give absolutely no reasons why Photoshop is better than Gimp and list a bunch of things that Gimp can do too....

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Also the UX difference is worth the money alone.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

And that’s probably why it sucks so much. If they’d just cloned the work flow of other programs GIMP would actually be good for amateurs.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

To redo the entire UI?

What are you talking about? A solid wheel would perform horribly off road or on road in a gas or electric vehicle. You need some sort of tread and deformation to get any grip off road. And rubber is used because it deforms to the road and gives you a larger contact patch which gives you more grip. If you put solid wheels attached to a motor it wouldn’t take much effort to get them to slip in anything but the most ideal conditions. That’s why when people go off roading they get monster tires on tiny wheels and air them down until they’re ready to fall off.

In a horse drawn wagon solid wheels make sense because the wheels aren’t driving the carriage the horse is. The horse can step over bumps and put its hoof on solid ground. A wheel can’t do that, so it has to comply to the road. The up side is the solid wheel has a lot less rolling resistance. Early EVs had solid wheels because that’s just what we had.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Large flat roads are also more efficient. Have you ever driven down a bumpy road? That shit aint efficient. All of your horizontal speed gets turned into vertical speed in a jarringly unpleasant way. That's part of why trains are so efficient because their tracks are so smooth.

Large wheels have nothing to do with a vehicles ability to go off road/on bumpy roads, if anything they're counter productive because you want large soft tires and small wheels for that scenario.

Don’t forget Truckuary.

No it doesn’t. Kia just has a sales event that overlaps with gay month.

Using HA to start my work laptop

No major question here, just thought you might find this interesting. It's an example of the kind of (off-the-wall) things you can do with HA that aren't immediately obvious. When I was starting out with HA, I enjoyed reading these examples, because it gave me ideas for my own setup. And, I wrote many automations that should...

FYI OEM docks are CHEAP used once they've been out for a few years. And no you can't mix docks from other OEMs and have the power button work since there's no standard for it.

I've found aftermarket ones to be super unreliable though, especially if you use HDMI and power from the dock.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

The docks will work with anything that has Thunderbolt 3/4. It's only the power switch that won't work, and you can't do the breaking USB spec of charging over 100 watts @20v. The downside is those OEM docks tend to be Thunderbolt only, and if you connect it to a USB only device it will either not work at all, or have SEVERELY limited functions.

Is yours a dock dock or just a big hub? I don't really have much experience with the dock docks, but I know the overgrown hubs we use at work love to burn out the HDMI converter chips, but usually work well enough besides that.

Windows 7 lacked USB 3 drivers, and if you have a bleeding edge system windows might not have the chipset drivers which is like half of your system. (EX windows 10/11 lacked 11th Gen. chipset drivers until 22H2)

Outside of that I’ve never had the basics work. Especially a mouse and keyboard.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Whatever makes RTX work is what accelerations a lot of AI tasks. I’d argue the 1080 is bordering on irrelevant if it wasn’t for the 8 gigs of ram to save it. The 2060 should be much faster despite for gaming being about in par.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

What does Ubuntu Pro get you besides extended support after the normal OS EOL?

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

How does the vGPU compare to running it on the bare metal? Last I tried things were painful but technically usable.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

In terms of privacy of course because in terms of price it’s another story

Never buy .xyz

I just wanted to post this here because I want to help you all and hurt gen.xyz as much as possible. I had a .xyz domain through njal.la which I used to host jellyfin, homeassistant, and other basic things for friends and family. My domain recently became inaccessible without any notice. After a while of troubleshooting, I found...

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

You can buy .xyz domains from places other than gen.xyz. I have mine from namecheap and I haven't had any issues in like 10 years with them.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

UI/UX mostly. Yeah you can do a lot of things, but the experience doing it isn't as easy. Ex: gimp. Which has gotten a lot of hate here recently (and deservedly so)

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

I think it's changed recently. Even if you have icloud messaging on you used to have to explicitly turn it on per device. But I recently got a new iPad and when I went to check that setting it was already on.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

You have to specifically request that siri uses chat GPT for a request.

Microsoft in damage-control mode, says it will prioritize security over AI (arstechnica.com)

Microsoft is pivoting its company culture to make security a top priority, President Brad Smith testified to Congress on Thursday, promising that security will be "more important even than the company’s work on artificial intelligence."...

You can have audits done on proprietary software. Just because the public can't see it doesn't mean nobody else can.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Do you yourself actually audit the software you use, or do you just trust what others say?

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

If you're a big enough organization (like the US government) you can pay anyone you want (or even your own people) to audit Microsoft's code.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Even if they don't sell the data I'm sure it's valuable for their models.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Civ 5 sunk it's teeth into me deep. I could never stand 6. I only managed about 41 hours into 6, but 5 I have well over a thousand in (even if steam only reports 600 of it)

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

The switch does it really weirdly too.

You have to disconnect from wifi so it can create it's own hotspot, you connect your phone to that connection, then it hosts a little web server where you can open it up and download your shit.

I mean I guess it's better than xbox or playstations method which I honestly have no figured out yet. Not that I've really tried.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Upload to what though? I want it on my phone or my computer.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Those features don't mean shit if you can't use a modern OS after a couple of years.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

you can just generically compile the kernel

Not always. I have numerous old now useless SBCs that never merged their shit with the mainline linux kernel so my only option is to run something 10+ years old.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

(also some cars have integrated tracking)

Pretty much every single car made in the last 5 years has it. And it's been in cars starting in the 90s so just because your car is a 2015 doesn't mean it's safe.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

This is why I’ve gone back to windows on the machines I care about and don’t plan on going back. Open source software is cool, but it also kinda sucks. I’ll use Linux all day on servers. But my primary desktop is windows and my secondary desktop is Mac OS and I doubt that’s changing any time soon.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Why 30 years from now?

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

You can already easily manufacture your own firearm with a combination of 3D printers and some metal working tools. Or just buy the barrel pre made and that's 99% the effort.

“grapheneOS trolls are downvoting every single post and comment of mine, and committing vote manipulation on Lemmy. They are using 5-6 accounts.”

Is that really criticism of graphene os? or is it complaining about specific users who like graphene os?

    fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

It would be good for playing old XP era games or hardware. But for modern tasks?

Yeah no, that P4 wastes way too much power to be useful for anything.

    fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

I like how people on lemmy seem to only think of the high stakes state sponsored theft. And not the theft that’s thousands of times more common.

    fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Does your GPU properly support ray tracing acceleration? If it does (and it has the vram) the hit is not that bad for any reasonable level of raytracing.

    fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Is that FH5? I've never had it change the video settings of the game after a driver update. Do you have the stupid automatically set video settings according to what nvidia thinks is good turned on?

    fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

To be fair “optimizing for your PC” is just compiling shaders. It does that every time your drivers update. The video setting change is down to Nvidia being really stupid.

    fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

    before joining a domain.

You do it essentially while joining the domain. If you hit the "work" option instead of "home" it immediately goes to a "sign into your domain" screen.

I like how they chose a phone wireless charging for their "super fast and efficient" charging article.

    fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Waking from hibernation is sooo much slower than waking from sleep. Apple silicon macs are very efficient in their S0 standby so they'll go days before entering hibernation. Kinda odd that they bring that up now that Apple has fully transitioned to ARM machines where this isn't really an issue. That said S0 standby on this 2019 Macbook I have for work is dogshit.

    fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Gnome is a little too minimal and ends up being kinda difficult to use because of it. Especially when you're used to windows. I tried it again for like a week when Ubuntu 24 came out and said "fuck this shit" and installed KDE.

    fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Yes, it's been back gnome for like 6 years now.

    fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

The Intel MacBook waking up from hibernation is about 30 seconds to get to the login prompt, 30 seconds for the login prompt to actually work, then 10-15 seconds after entering the password to get to a usable desktop environment with the wifi generally connecting within that window. It's now awful, but traditional S1-3 standby was so much better. S0 standby is great if you're frequently opening and closing the device, but is unusable on higher power devices.

But that's with only 8 gigs of ram on this MacBook, the more ram the longer it takes. The 32 gigs of ram in my actual work laptop (ThinkPad P1 11th gen i9) takes about a minute to wake from hibernation, and like 2 minutes for it to fully get situated. If I do that on battery that's about 3-5% of my battery just waking from hibernation.

The iPhone 15 has been out for over half a year now and people still spread this FUD. The iPhone 15 does nothing special with its USB C port.

    fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Every iPhone has been expensive on release. As time goes on more and more people get newer and newer phones. And what was new and expensive becomes cheap and available.

    fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

It's Tesla. It's always going to be a OTA update.

I'm sure they'll find a way to OTA update hardware issues.

    fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

I’m still not used to asrock being a brand people take seriously. Then again I’m not used to Asus not be good.
