You could buy a cheap vps and host your stuff there with basic html that you could learn as you go if you don't know already. I think their are pre made licenses that you could put on there to stop ai training. You could also hide pages on it full of garbage data for anyone who ignores the license to get bad results.

Github is microsoft.

Did tiktok change something?

I have friends that send me tiktok links via whatsapp and then they ask questions about it like "what do you think, scam or not". I used to open them with cookies rejected in ddg browser but now it pretends to freeze after 4 seconds of play, then it says that i must open it in the app and replaces the "play" button with a fake...

HumanPerson ,

Respond with "I think it is a scam. The website seems pretty sketchy."

Also proxitok

HumanPerson ,

Are you saying you DON'T want to protect the children??? You monster! /s

Edit: "Are you saying 9/11 didn't change everything, because 9/11 changed everything" --Peter Griffin (I may have the quote wrong, but it was something like that)

HumanPerson ,

Not who you asked, but there are plenty. GPT4all is pretty good. You could check out locallama on Lemmy for more.

addressing misconceptions about the recent TunnelVision vulnerability

I've been seeing a lot of confusion around the TunnelVision vulnerability. While I'm no expert, I've done a fair share of research and I'll edit this post with corrections if needed. The goal of this post is to answer the question: does this affect me?...

HumanPerson ,

To add to that, (or maybe you said this, forgive me if so I am sick RN and my brain is not working optimally), there's no such thing as a trusted network, and many ways to trick devices into connecting. Evil twins are clones of nearby networks that you will connect to instead. There's also an attack where your device is actively sending out requests to connect to saved networks, and an attacker can simply respond to that request to get you to connect, and authenticate regardless of what password you send.

HumanPerson ,

Yeah. The school I go to uses MAC based blocking on their network, and it is otherwise an open network.

HumanPerson ,

It's done as a whitelist and they issue devices.

HumanPerson ,

I don't have this problem exactly, but what I would recommend is putting it in a specific separate library. You could even set it up so only your mother's account can access it, and you never have to see it, or you could have it visible but never go to it.

HumanPerson ,

Well it isn't really CPU vs GPU. It is integrated vs dedicated GPU. A CPU certainly can transcode, but not well. A lot of CPUs have integrated graphics which can handle transcoding quite well. I went with an Intel arc a380 because I know quite a lot of people could hit it under some circumstances. For most people though, I would recommend an Intel CPU with quicksync. What you really should spend your budget on IMO is as much storage as you can.

HumanPerson ,

Damn, what do you need that much RAM for?

HumanPerson ,

I know there are valid use cases for that much, I just always like to check that they didn't just see an LTT video and think they need way more than they do.

HumanPerson ,

If I were you I might try deploying a mini enterprise network with permissions and things. It would be fun to do it with active directory to try to practice pentesting, or it would also be fun to do with linux to try to learn more about deploying linux in enterprise environments.

HumanPerson ,

I don't like windows, so I don't deploy any of this for real, but yesterday and the day before I set up a windows server, a few clients, and a Kali VM and manager to get in. I found out if you type "\\anything" into the windows bar it will send that user's name and hash out very easily with llmnr poisoning on every keystroke. What's worse is that is the default behavior. It is super fun to learn about all this though.

Edit: upon posting this comment it made the double backslash look like a single backslash so I changed it to a triple so it looks right on my end but just know I meant for it to be double.

Pi.Alert is dead...💀 Long live NetAlert X 🚀 (network monitoring) (lemmy.world)

After thinking for about a year about it I decided to rename the project to 🚀NetAlertX. This will help prevent confusion about which fork someone is using, and differentiate it from the now stale upstream project. With about 1800 or so commits over the stale project, I thought, this project deserved a new name. It will also...

I think they were referring to the UI which looks very similar to the pihole dashboard.

Ask: How do you handle your résumés?

Usually I rely on my network & haven’t needed this kind of document in ages, but I’ve been tasked with creating a résumé for myself. I’ve grown more privacy-conscious every year & I think it’s weird that we are expected to give out so much information about ourselves to companies that lie about their culture & don’t...

HumanPerson ,

How do you grow a disk in linux? I am tempted to make a joke about planting hard drive seeds but I do genuinely want to know what you mean.

HumanPerson ,

I wish I could have a fingerprint and a pin with a limited number of attempts. Plus a password after like three failed pin attempts. I think that would be a pretty good balance between security and convenience.

HumanPerson , (edited )

Did you use it to cook the pizza?

HumanPerson ,

Apart from privacy concerns, if they aren't near people with iPhones it wouldn't work that well.

Increase your Linux Server Internet Speed with TCP BBR Congestion-Control (www.cyberciti.biz)

I recently found this on Reddit while looking into why jellyfin is effected so much by latency. I found that this worked and thought I would share it because it is generally applicable, takes five minutes to setup, and helps a lot with bandwidth on higher latency connections. I admit I am not sure of the technical stuff behind...

HumanPerson OP ,

I don't know if it is, but it is really as simple as adding to lines to a config file and restarting a service.

HumanPerson OP ,

I believe it will result in like 10% additional overhead, which may be bad on metered connections, but I am not aware of any situation that results in decreased performance. I don't really know much about this so if anyone would like to correct me, please do.

HumanPerson ,

I agree about most of that, but I am curious what is wrong with graphene os. I use it but if there is a reason not to I would like to know what you recommend.

HumanPerson ,

What would you recommend I use instead?

HumanPerson ,

Replace www. With safe. Or you can get an extension to do that automatically.

Tarallo - selfhostable FOSS Trello alternative (feddit.it)

Hi! For the ones of you that use Trello, I made a simple to use and host alternative in PHP. It's not a complete alternative like other projects, and I mainly made it to be able to host it on free PHP web servers while having control over data/attachments. It also support a basic importer for Trello JSON exports....

HumanPerson ,

Wow code with actual comments???!!!! Amazing!

HumanPerson ,

Is there a docker version or a chance of one in the future?

HumanPerson ,

I was looking for something like this a little while ago but couldn't find anything and this looks perfect. My server is mostly docker only so I might try to figure it out.

HumanPerson ,

Watchtower will automatically update docker containers.

HumanPerson ,

Yes, but I believe it can be configured for notifications as well, I just never needed that.

HumanPerson ,

Can't help but I totally agree about projects that assume they are the only thing running. That is the reason I don't run nextcloud.

HumanPerson ,

Possibly that is the issue. I try every once in a while to see.

HumanPerson ,

FYI about VPNs, they encrypt unencrypted traffic only part of the way. Everything is still unencrypted between the VPN server and the server you are connecting to. Just thought I'd say this because a lot of VPN ads are very misleading about this.

HumanPerson ,

They are created by "the team behind" an SEO company and their privacy policy doesn't look great. They do use their own indexing though.

How should I do backups?

I have a server running Debian with 24 TB of storage. I would ideally like to back up all of it, though much of it is torrents, so only the ones with low seeders really need backed up. I know about the 321 rule but it sounds like it would be expensive. What do you do for backups? Also if anyone uses tape drives for backups I am...

HumanPerson OP , (edited )

I was heavily considering borg but I just looked up rsync and it looks like everything I need. Thank you.

Edit: Actually encryption would also be nice. Is there any way to do that with rsync?

HumanPerson OP ,

Your right, I'm sold.

HumanPerson ,

I am disappointed that this does not appear to be a post about building a server into your car.

HumanPerson ,

The better option is not to use windows at all, but if you are, I don't think disabling windows defender will stop them from getting whatever they want anyway.

HumanPerson ,

If it is local network stuff you could see if you can allow it just network connection but no internet. I'm not sure how you could do that though.

HumanPerson ,

It looks like your using nvidia for transcodes. Try disabling hardware acceleration temporarily to test if it is related.

HumanPerson ,

I have seen that too. I didn't find anything but will definitely be keeping an eye on this post.

HumanPerson ,

Njal.la. They buy the domain for you and let you control it. They also don't give whois information by default.

Android phone saving metadata for screenshots (i.ibb.co)

I always remove this data from my screenshots before sharing, but is there any way to prevent this from happening in the first place? I've searched and searched, but all I can find is information about how to remove the data after the fact, which I already know how to do, but it would sure be nice if it never got added in the...

HumanPerson ,

I agree that the "I have nothing to hide" argument is wrong, but could you not use the word normies? I think when people who visit this community see stuff like that it seems kinda gatekeepy even if that isn't the intent.

Linux distro for selfhosting server

So I have been running a fair amount of selfhosted services over the last decade or so. I have always been running this on a Ubuntu LTS distribution running on a intel NUC machine. Most, if not all of my services run in a docker container, and using a docker compose file that brings everything up. The server is headless. I...

HumanPerson ,

I do Debian on my server. I use openSUSE tumbleweed on the desktop but I could see leap being good for a server. YAST is pretty great .
