Why are you manually running backups?
Script it and run as a cron job

Sounds like you don't have port forwarding setup.

I highly recommend setting up Nginx Proxy Manager and using it as a reverse proxy.

I have lots of services, but using a reverse proxy means I only have to expose 2 ports (80 & 443) and then I can serve whatever I want, like Plex, over https without a relay.

Yes, I use subdomains.

I pay for one domain name in Cloudflare (e.g. awesomedomain.com), and have a single "A" record pointing to the public IP of my server, and a single "CNAME" record with a value of * that points to awesomedomain.com.

That way, any subdomain gets directed to the server, and then you setup Nginx Proxy Manager to listen for certain subdomains and where to proxy them. No need to manage any further DNS records in Cloudflare, and any changes made on the proxy don't need any wait time for DNS records to propagate.

Nginx Proxy Manager also handles automatic SSL certs through Let's Encrypt - I really can't recommend it enough.

Why is replacement for home device controls so complicated?

I recently learned about Home Assistant here on Lemmy. It looks like a replacement for Google Home, etc. However, it requires an entire hardware installation. Proprietary products just use a simple app to manage and control devices, so can someone explain why a pretty robust dedicated device is necessary as a replacement? The...

Get any old enterprise workstation (they practically give Dells away for free) and get to know Docker.

Using multiple Pis for single applications is a fool's errand - my Optiplex was free and it is running ~30 containers with plenty of room to breathe.

Next tech is probably going to be dedicated GPUs or similar to run personalized AI

ionos.com is $1/month and you can use external domain names. That plan includes the cost of a domain name as well, so you can transfer the external domain over if you really like it.

What are you talking about?
This is simply not true.

By default it's only for the the same account, but you can change it in the download settings to allow transfers to "Steam Friends" or "Anyone".

It's almost as if TLDs are completely arbitrary.

This is anarchy!

Yeah, I mostly use Linux. Unfortunately, certain games only run on Windows and you're stuck using it if you want to play those titles.

This device looks to be supported by the custom firmware project over here: https://mrchromebox.tech

Basically it allows you to replace the stock firmware and just run regular ol' Linux, entirely replacing ChromeOS.

There's also a pretty good video outlining most of the process here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6oyqrrXTLM

I used archinstall to setup my laptop with Gnome and only use pamac-nosnap for package management (flatpak is fine, but fuck snaps).

I made the most noob Arch install ever and I love it.

A CMS is way overkill for what you need.

I suggest something like Hugo, with plenty of templates available and even the ability to host it out of Github, it's a pretty good option.

how will this affect that absolute dump truck of an ass?

Edit: some people cannot take a joke - I assure you, that ass is no joke.

funkajunk ,

Just to flesh that out a bit...
All you need is to add a TXT record to your DNS records:

Name: _dmarc.yourdomain.com

Value: v=DMARC1; p=reject; pct=100

It looks like a worse version of Stremio, unless there's something I'm missing?

funkajunk ,
@funkajunk@lemm.ee avatar

Stremio + torrentio + RealDebrid

This allows Stremio to stream any torrent using the RealDebrid service, which already has cached copies of the most popular downloads so you can watch it instantly from their servers. It also has a great library feature to save followed shows, and progress is saved and synced to your Stremio account.

https://www.reddit.com/r/StremioAddons/comments/yi5jdw/ultimate_guide_to_stremio_torrentio_rd/

The only caveat here is that RealDebrid is a paid service, but I only pay around $3 a month and it has literally everything that is on any of the streaming services.

This setup is now my primary means of watching tv and movies, and I say that as someone who has a couple of media servers filled with content and hosted with Plex - this Stremio setup is just too good.

funkajunk ,
@funkajunk@lemm.ee avatar

I was easily paying over $60 a month for various streaming services, now I pay $3.

funkajunk ,
@funkajunk@lemm.ee avatar

Yeah, I already have a QNAP 8-bay NAS with the *Arr stack pulling tv shows and movies and automatically serving them up in my Plex instance "for free" (because operating costs).

Stremio is just super convenient, and that's what I'm paying for, the convenience. I can just turn it on and start watching random garbage tv and don't have to worry about it taking up space on my server, because it's content that I will probably never watch again.
