I would rather use a device from a hardware company than an ad company.

hightrix ,

I’ll just use I and stop using YouTube. I won’t purposefully poison my mind with ads.

hightrix ,

This is it. Everything “just works” on windows. Until that exact same experience is available on Linux it will never take over. And no, I don’t mean “there is an app you can install for a distribution that makes it easy to…”. That is an immediate failure. It needs to be easy to do everything, out of the box, with no additional setup.

I say this as someone that uses windows, Mac, and various flavors of Linux every single day. I want this for Linux, but it isn’t there.

hightrix ,

I’m just here to say fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck Google.

Squarespace to Go Private in $6.9B All-Cash Transaction with Permira (investors.squarespace.com)

Stockholders will receive $44.00 per share in cash, which represents a premium of 29% over the 90-day volume weighted average trading price of $34.09 Squarespace, Inc. (NYSE: SQSP ), the design-driven platform helping entrepreneurs build brands and businesses online, today announced that it has entered into a definitive...

hightrix ,

This is just the public warning to stop using square space. Once the PE vultures are in, the product will be made worse and more expensive until it shuts down for lack of “profitability”and growth.

hightrix ,

This just in, people don’t like ads. At all. Most people.

It is time to find a new business model that works. I’m not smart enough to know what that is so that you don’t piss off users, but whoever figures it out will be a billionaire.

hightrix ,

That is absolutely a solution. But what I’m talking about is a way to monetize while keeping the service free but without showing ads.

This is the billion dollar idea. If not trillion.

hightrix ,

What monopoly?

Users have choice. If they want an open system, choose android. If they want a closed system, choose Apple.

What’s the fuckin problem. Let’s deal with real issues, not this bullshit.

hightrix ,

Quell the outrage.

They are paying for it. Here’s a quick link from the top of search.

hightrix ,

This. I always say this exact thing.

If you provide content for free, expect people to take it for free.

hightrix ,

But did you even think of the children?

Sounds like you just want to hurt those precious little ones.

How dare you!!!!!!!! /s

hightrix ,

Having had win11 installed for approximately a year, my default browser (Firefox) has never been changed by an update.

hightrix ,

Also not an issue when you disable this in windows.

hightrix ,

I wouldn’t know how that feels. Did it once and haven’t had an issue since.

I think some people here like to shit on windows just to shit on windows and haven’t actually used win11

hightrix ,

PEBKAC

hightrix ,

Not sure what point you are trying to make here.

I’m not having any computer problems.

hightrix ,

Why would I acknowledge an issue that doesn’t exist for me?

You are barking up the wrong tree here bud. I use the right tool for the job, for me that means windows for my personal machine, Linux for work or special purpose machines. And Mac to write code.

hightrix ,

Unfortunately, I don’t have a good answer for you.

I built a new Pc last year and decided to put win11 on it to judge the OS for myself. In all reality, it doesn’t feel much different than win10. Boot up is fast, startup is fast, everything just works.

Sorry I can’t provide more info.

hightrix ,

They want the unicorn, they will settle for a horse with a horn taped to its forehead.

hightrix ,

I spent a few months with each of them recently.

For me, Apple Music recommendations are by far the best. Tidal was decent but the UI was a pain and the integrations didn’t work well. Spotify had great integrations and easy device switching, but the recommendations were terrible, for me. YouTube music is the worst of the batch. Bad UI, bad recommendations, and just not a music lovers platform.

So, I use Apple Music. For me, it is the best since the GOAT Google Play Music was retired.

hightrix ,

It takes a month or so before recommendations start to get close to my tastes. Apple has consistently recommended either old bands I haven’t listened to in years or new bands that I end up liking. Sure, they still fail from time to time, but I listen to a very wide variety and Apple seems to be the only platform to recognize that if I’m listening to metallica, I don’t want to hear kid cudi in the same playlist

hightrix ,

I’m not the OP, but when Spotify added these is made the user experience worse.

I used Spotify for music and only music. So seeing a row or two of podcasts inserted before music was really annoying. Getting podcast recommendations was also annoying. If they would have let me just opt out of seeing podcasts, there would not have been any issues. But they didn’t.

I don’t use Spotify anymore.

hightrix ,

People here are weird. I tend to just ignore the votes.

hightrix ,

It is unfortunate that this is what you have decided to take away from the blog post instead of reflecting on the criticism I have provided.

This is a serious problem across Lemmy(and elsewhere). Someone makes a reasonable argument and the responses will all pile on either something in the users comment history or one sentence in 5 paragraphs that they disagree with.

hightrix ,

I’m extremely technically literate, build my own PCs and write my own software tools.

I don’t use Linux at home because I don’t want to fiddle. I want to sit down, open steam, and play a game.

I use Linux for many things, but my personal computer uses windows because it just works all the time.

hightrix ,

This place is a massive echo chamber. Votes don’t matter

hightrix ,

What educational purpose would making her do the whole thing again serve?

Learning from mistakes. Learning that when you screw up, you don’t get a free pass to fix your mistakes. Learning to save frequently when working on a document. I can go on and on.

You are coddling your child and I feel bad for her.

hightrix ,

Look at how you’ve handled this situation so far. Seriously, step back and take a look at it.

First, we can skip the typing for her because that’s been discussed to death. But then, when you found the mistake, you immediately started typing again and even called it cheating because you were trying to sound like a 13 yr old girl. You are teaching her that using any means necessary to get a good grade is acceptable.

Next, you are trying to blame the software and not take responsibility for your mistake. This is teaching her not to take responsibility but to instead find something else to blame for mistakes.

No, you should not punish her for your mistake, but you should instead teach her how to handle mistakes.

I guarantee that this will happen to her in the future when she is typing her own work. She will get mad, blame the software, then cheat to get a good grade. This is what you’ve taught her.

hightrix ,

Yes. You should have made her sit with you and redo the entire assignment. Not as punishment, but as rectifying the mistake as she would have had to do had she been the typist.

Treat it as a learning moment and not as punishment.

hightrix ,

Ok. I’ll try to put it more simply for you.

  • She dictated her essay
  • you typed her essay
  • her essay wasn’t saved and got deleted
  • you type your version of her essay
  • she turned in/will turn in your essay

The essay she is going to submit is not her words but yours.

Google is an advertising company. Apple is a hardware/software company. They have very different incentives from one another. Neither are my friend, but one’s entire business model runs on psychological manipulation, the other sells iPhones.

hightrix ,

An ad is an ad. If YouTube premium’s point is to remove ads then this should be included. Otherwise what’s the point? We should all just go back to using ad blockers.

We should not pay for content twice. Viewing ads is paying for content. Paying for premium is paying for content.
