Seems like an odd group to take a random swipe at. Also, HTML?

johannesvanderwhales ,

Doesn't the use of VoIP often make these hard to trace, as well?

johannesvanderwhales ,

I don't think Garfield is a strip aimed at people who value originality.

A lot do, but also a lot don't. It's household by household.

I'll also mention that you can probably expect people who grew up in no-shoe households to have strong feelings about it.

Microsoft Account to local account conversion guide erased from official Windows 11 guide — instructions redacted earlier this week (www.tomshardware.com)

Microsoft has been pushing hard for its users to sign into Windows with a Microsoft Account. The newest Windows 11 installer removed the easy bypass to the requirement that you make an account or login with your existing account. If you didn't install Windows 11 without a Microsoft Account and now want to stop sending the...

johannesvanderwhales ,

This is true of a lot of large companies in general. The fact that they make money in spite of this shows how much the markets favor established players.

johannesvanderwhales ,

A lot of people euphemistically use "school night" to mean work night.

johannesvanderwhales ,

Sure, a lot of times they're just letting other people lie through their products.

johannesvanderwhales ,

Every piece of software that's available in Russia or China has to comply with their laws. Their laws are fucked up. This is also very easy to circumvent.

johannesvanderwhales ,

They actually seem quite a bit different. The one for Cara isn't perfectly round and seems to suggest a person in the middle.

Its Instagram mashed up with artstation

At the end of the day it's whatever is understood by the bartender. There's also probably a pretty large proportion of people ordering these who have never even heard of The Troubles.

johannesvanderwhales ,

I can say that in the case of enterprise windows setups, the system caches your login credentials if it can't reach the domain controller, so that you can still log in even if you're not on the corporate network. I imagine it does similar for windows accounts (but I never use one so I can't say for sure).

Spotify is raising the cost of Premium subscriptions, again (www.engadget.com)

Spotify is officially raising its Premium subscription rates in the US come July, following reports of the move in April. The platform is increasing its Individual plan from $11 to $12 monthly and its Duo plan from $15 to $17 monthly — the same jump as last year's $1 and $2 price hikes, respectively. However, its Family plan...

Well it's probably the music labels. They basically only exist to steal money from the actual creators.

For what it's worth... You're already eligible to a free tax return if you're under a certain income. Edit: Reference - I think a lot of people are unaware of this.

CEO of Google Says It Has No Solution for Its AI Providing Wildly Incorrect Information (futurism.com)

You know how Google's new feature called AI Overviews is prone to spitting out wildly incorrect answers to search queries? In one instance, AI Overviews told a user to use glue on pizza to make sure the cheese won't slide off (pssst...please don't do this.)...

johannesvanderwhales ,

TBH this is surprisingly honest.

johannesvanderwhales ,

I think it's more likely that, because the public perceives Google as being a bit behind Microsoft on AI, it's to their advantage to push a "AI is not ready yet" narrative.

johannesvanderwhales ,

"Senioritis" usually describes people who have checked out because they have a short amount of time left and have already received college admissions, so their grades don't matter much.

johannesvanderwhales ,

I'm in my 40s and I still regularly have dreams that I somehow didn't really graduate high school.

There was x11amp at one point. I forget what it's named now.

Consumers have limited visibility into the conditions under which their products are made, and consumer behavior does not always result in the most desirable outcome for the public. Which makes it a regulation problem. That's why regulation exists.

johannesvanderwhales ,

False dichotomy here. Americans could certainly reduce their intake of meat without going full vegan. Regulations could be created to treat livestock more humanely without completely eliminating factory farming, which yes would increase prices, which would probably also reduce meat consumption somewhat. Also population growth within the US has dropped off quite a bit and is projected to further decline.

johannesvanderwhales ,

If you're talking about the box, understandable. If you're talking about actual mac and cheese, maybe you just don't know anyone who knows how to cook.

johannesvanderwhales ,

That's kind of my point...if you can't manage a decent mac and cheese, you pretty much can't cook at all.

johannesvanderwhales ,

Well, I mean, I can think of several different variations of a stovetop version (bechamel, the sodium citrate, or the condensed milk version that's been gaining popularity), a question of whether to bake it or not, endless add-ins, choices of cheese to use, choice of pasta to use. Making a bechamel without lumps is not hard but it does require some knowledge of basic technique. And it is actually conceivable that someone would use fresh pasta, which is a whole different ballgame. So while macaroni and cheese in its most basic is not at all a difficult dish it leaves tons of room for putting a personal spin on it...which means it has plenty of ways it can go wrong, too. I've certainly had plenty of disappointing mac and cheese in my life, sometimes at restaurants that really should be able to do better.

johannesvanderwhales ,

Yeah? Fancy baked mac and cheese isn't uncommon at all, sometimes dressed up with stuff like lobster and truffle oil, or sometimes as some sort of baked Wisconsin three cheese deal with crispy bread crumbs. Or it's a staple side at BBQ restaurants, and a lot of people people will judge a place harshly on its quality. I've also seen a lot of fried mac and cheese wedges on pub menus (which I do not recommend, just fill your wedges with cheese instead, the extra carbs add nothing).

johannesvanderwhales ,

Wait do people do lines off of cell phones these days?

johannesvanderwhales ,

This just comes down to the fact that "dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by the inverse of the fraction" is an easy rule to follow but not particularly intuitive. In natural language, when most people hear "divide by half" they're actually picturing "divide by two" in their head.

johannesvanderwhales ,

Huh, it's funny, my company uses Webex and I'd probably prefer Teams.

johannesvanderwhales ,

I worked at a place that actually tracked whether you reported the fake phishing emails or not...

johannesvanderwhales ,

It's not for no reason, it's to lower bandwidth costs. It may not be a reason that benefits you but there is definitely a reason.

johannesvanderwhales ,

I think they're doing it for logged out users. If you're logged into an account, you're fine.

johannesvanderwhales ,

Yep. Reddit has gone full corporate.

johannesvanderwhales ,

There's a beta of RES for mobile now, but I haven't tried it yet. I mostly use lemmy instead on mobile (but it's not really the same thing).

johannesvanderwhales ,

I dunno, I think business jargon exists for the same reason it exists in any other field. When you spend a lot of time focused on a niche topic you come up with really specialized vocabulary to describe it. Plus it probably qualifies as a form of code switching.

johannesvanderwhales ,

I dunno if it's the hardware requirements. The ads are the thing I don't want. Not sure I see the point of moving the start menu either.

johannesvanderwhales ,

I just turned off tpm and my laptop has mostly stopped nagging me about upgrading. I did get a notice that win10 support is ending soon.

johannesvanderwhales ,

A lot of these fashion labels have just killed their brands by pushing out massive numbers of cheap diffusion lines.

johannesvanderwhales ,

How exactly are they spinning showing ads in the start menu as a thing that a user would want?

johannesvanderwhales ,

The most common use case is probably bittorrent. Without port forwarding, you won't be connectable. But anything where someone might need to connect to your local machine from the internet, like hosting game servers or other self-hosting.

johannesvanderwhales ,

You don't, which is why VPN ips get blacklisted so much.

johannesvanderwhales ,

You have no problem downloading because your client is initiating the connection. But people won't be able to initiate a connection to you. If you're just leeching off public trackers and don't care about your ratio, then that might not matter to you. But if you're trying to maintain a ratio on a good quality private tracker that's a no go.

You can use a site like this with your VPN ip and the port you have configured for bittorrent while your bittorrent client is up to see if you're connectable.

johannesvanderwhales ,

I'm really wondering the story behind the taking of this picture.
