Maybe not. You will have the same number of tax preparers chasing less work. Through the magic of the Free Market™️, shouldn’t that mean pressure to reduce prices? We can only hope.

This is why I may never be able to fully repair my relationship with my religious father after my own journey out, because I love him too much to undermine the belief that sustains him as an 87 year old.

My own journey out has been incredibly painful and challenging but that is MY life path, not his. He stuck with my mother for 25 years to the very end after her Parkinsons diagnosis and he got to watch her choke to death on some food at the end.

I really believe my father doesn’t need the religion to be that good and faithful, because he is just basically made of good stuff. But I will never attack his faith even though in my heart of hearts I find the foundations of that faith to be risible. What would be gained? What would it say about me if I did?

meyotch ,

By any chance are you a fan of Strong Towns? If not they are very active in trying to kill Stroads

meyotch ,

It’s like, their whole thing!

meyotch ,

I agree.

Does it count if one uses an LLM to help compose the shell script? I mean, I can and have written gnarly scripts by hand but it can take half an hour to work out a single line sometimes for a simple task versus 10 minutes describing it in plain language.

meyotch ,

Whew, thanks for not being a knee-jerk about my 'mental prosthetic'! It takes real skill and understanding, I think, to even write the pseudocode or plain language description of a working script. After all, describing the problem and the outline of the solution is usually the hardest part. Pecking out the syntax takes the bulk of the time, but if you can avoid that step, what is lost? Very little in my experience.

I've begun collecting an assortment of custom python and shell script utilities to accomplish routine or one-off tasks for which system utilities don't exist. You bet you are still learning when doing it this way. After all, you have to understand the code well enough to tell if the output is what you need.

Bless you for this comment.

How many commenters here have even tried to figure out how ‘busses’ (the electoral process) work and find a way to get involved?

Spend 5 hours a week (yes, you can find the time, deduct it from your screen time!) and you could basically take over your local party committee. That alone won’t change the national trend, but you might just be able to influence a city council or school board race.

Local races hinge on a handful of votes very often. In our area, we managed to keep two anti-LGBTQ+ candidates off the school board last election. This impacts the lives of literally thousands of youth and their families and it hinged on about 80 votes. Vote, yes, but at least skim the Chilton manual for your bus in between elections. It really does matter

meyotch ,

Why do you keep insisting that the only race that matters is for the Presidency? You keep hidng behind your superior moral stance based on the Electoral Colleges flaws. The electoral college only pertains to the presidency.

What’s going on in your local school board or city council races? If you can’t answer, then perhaps reconsider who may be falling for a psy-op.

meyotch ,

Please read the original post and let me know where the presidency is mentioned.

Gwynne Shotwell deserves quite a lot more credit for SpaceX than Musk. Someone has to keep the place running until the ketamine clears his system.

This is a replica prop from an old TV show about time travel. (Voyagers, the device was called Omni). That’s what I thought of.

meyotch ,

I would genuinely like links to some of these studies. Do you have any specifics?

meyotch ,

Thank you for the pointers. It was a sincere request and the literature somewhat scattered.

To Change Everything, an anarchist appeal (crimethinc.com)

If you could change anything, what would you change? Would you go on vacation for the rest of your life? Make fossil fuels stop causing climate change? Ask for ethical banks and politicians? Surely nothing could be more unrealistic than to keep everything the way it is and expect different results....

I love fire drills at work. Beats actually working for sure

meyotch ,

A distinction without a difference. Religion produces demonstrable harm to many people. To be religious is to be an extremist. The entire idea that a being from your imagination should influence my behavior is whack.

meyotch ,

Something about my religious leaders wanting to strap electrodes to my junk and torture me for being gay has given me some strong opinions. Don't you dare dismiss my experiences as invalid, I'm fighting terrorists here.

meyotch ,

Never ruin a good hobby by turning it into a business. I do think that's what the original post is getting at. Sure there may be a few passionate people (with ownership stakes) driving the creation of new flavors, but most people involved in actually providing the ice cream are just alienated teens with carpal tunnel.

How Do I Avoid Giving Home Address to Bank?

I've heard of things like iPostal and Traveling Mailbox. Do these services allow you to register with bank, DMV, IRS, Voting, etc? How do they work? Would a normal P.O box using its physical address from USPS work? I've tried researching it and haven't gotten clear answers....

meyotch ,

Wait till you learn about phonebooks, the OG white pages. I don’t think banks are the source of the info that appears on the ‘white pages’ type sites.

meyotch ,

I would prefer not to consider this angle.

I like the bola-shot shotgun shell. I was thinking of how to eliminate the need for super precise targeting, to keep unit cost and complexity at a minimum.

How about a stringy polymer like Silly String but serious. Formulate it to be gummy and stronger and use a tiny charge to eject it through orifices in all directions. It would gum up props and cause the target to drop out of the sky. You’d only need a drone complex enough to get within a couple of feet of the target in any direction.

It is pretty obviously Research and Development of a commercial product in many cases. Not fair use.

meyotch ,

woosh

And all those smart people still have incredibly stupid opinions outside their areas of expertise. Everyone is a moron in the wrong context.

Nah, there was that beanie baby movie. People remember us. Totally.

The third blade prevents the hair from snapping back and injuring you.

meyotch ,

Oh yes it is a symptom of a deep cultural malaise. I was talking to my square-headed girlfriend about this just the other day. She agrees with me and that’s all I need.

They grew enough potatoes to feed the population in spite of the blight losses. However said taters fetched a higher price abroad. So fuck the poor, I guess.

meyotch ,

Decay is a natural process however that just happens if you don’t stop it. I still think ‘enshittification’ fits it best because it implies a bit of intentionality on the part of the shittifiers.

The term is sticky (ewww) and I think we are stuck with it.

meyotch ,

Voting takes like maybe 2 hours of my time in a given year to maintain registration, scan an information pamphlet and the actual act of delivering a ballot. I do have circumstances such that voting access is easy for me. I realize it is not so universally, but there is still an untapped ‘market’ of people who could easily vote, but don’t.

Like it or not, elections do have consequences. Even so, I agree shaming is likely ineffective as a motivational tool. Yes, i feel personally that people should vote strategically becuse in general it is a low cost activity with outsized consequences. Do a million other things too, because you have time.

Ok lets use your rule: no shaming.

What then are the more effective tools for uniting people to work in the same general direction? Successful movements seem to unite people in common cause without making it an explicit alliance between sects.

I don’t have a lot of solid answers but I would claim this is a good place to start a discussion.

meyotch ,

That’s my experience and advice too. I just naturally find friends that are on average 15 years younger than me. I’m early 50s and most friends are mid-30s. Working at a university for years sort of established that pattern and it has remained even though i went corporate.

I mean, have you met US Americans in their 50s? For me it’s the lack of imagination they tend to exhibit. I’m a perpetual child myself, no kids, no plans or desire for any. Younger friends have interests and dreams, still. I do too!

I find the quiet desperation that oozes from people in my age cohort to be off putting. If you are desperate, stop being quiet about it!

Having younger friends keeps me optimistic because younger generations seem to have looked behind the curtain and have partially deconstructed the illusions we are ruled by. Maybe there’s hope?
