The eradication of human sexuality from mass media culture is a clear sign of intense rot at the heart of our civilization

In what way though? We see all kinds of sexual and suggestive displays everywhere in media because “sex sells”. I guess you and the people up voting you don’t use Instagram, which is essentially what Twitter is now trying to emulate via this rule change.

How can such a fundamental element of thr human experience can be so conspicuously absent for almost all art and media.

But it’s not? Every visual form of art has some kind of sexualized content. Go literally anywhere (online or off) and it’s there. The reason why the more overt and pornographic content is behind NSFW is because it’s titillating. Experiencing prolonged bouts of arousal is mentally exhausting and often leads to depression or worsens it, https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10813043/#:~:text=Specifically%2C%20a%20higher%20and%20hyperstable,3%2C7%2C8%5D.

It’s why looking at porn all day is not mentally relaxing, necessarily. Some people also find overt sexual displays distracting as all they want to do is focus without being stimulated into another direction. That said, there are plenty of video games, movies, art forms, music experiences which explore human sexuality. They’re fun because it’s stimulation at a time when you’re in the frame of mind for it.

I feel a lot of times when people talk about “something is like this” what they’re really saying “my experiences show that something is like this”, and that to me just indicates they need to broaden their experiences.

We’re missing sex positivity in modern US society with respect to women’s reproductive rights and acceptance of different sexual orientations or gender identities. We’re not missing sex or sexualized content.

I am not misunderstanding it, heightened emotions = arousal, and sexual stimulation leads to heightened emotions

nifty ,
@nifty@lemmy.world avatar

I know :) I’ve done research in affective psychology. I was connecting the thread from arousal (in general) to sexual arousal. I think my follow up post shows that logic in a pithy one liner

Life only comes from death.

No? The recombination of genetic material results in complex life forms. That’s why we have multicellular organisms. Heck, in fact mitochondrial DNA proves that humans have a symbiotic relationship with microbes. So I guess I’d say the quoted text above is an unqualified statement.

Besides all that, humans are the only living organism that we know of capable of probing the nature of reality and existence. So simply put, it’s okay for us to hold ourselves to higher standard than the “reptile” or “monkey” brain.

Imagine if there was a life form stronger or smarter than humans, what would you want to say to it? “Life only comes from death so eat me or abuse me”. We can and should do better.

nifty ,
@nifty@lemmy.world avatar

You can be the first input in such situation then, but I prefer that humans can show they’re capable of better discourse than “eat or be eaten”. That’s kinda limited and trite in light of our more developed cognitive abilities, honestly. Also, the universe is literally limitless, so we don’t need to think in terms of zero sum games or resource limitations 🤷‍♀️

Regarding inputs: Eating fruits and seeds doesn’t kill anything, in fact plants evolved tasty fruits so that they’d be eaten and propagate. Vegetables and fungi can be eaten without killing the organism. You can consume eggs and milk without abusing or killing the animal

For the first para, I was responding to this

If it was a matter of survival, we would become an input.

I was responding to this for the second para

As far as we know the propagation of life requires the consumption of other life as inputs

The point being there are many ways to survive without consuming life. Fruits and seeds are not living things. Anyway, I think the main point I’d like to highlight is that there’s no need to think we’re constrained to a singular way of being for anything we do

Blood is thick rule (lemmy.world)

Image transcription: a four panel comic. First panel is of a dark haired twink sitting on a chair while a dark haired doctor wearing a white lab coat and holding a syringe, standing to the right of the twink, says “it’s time to run a blood test”. Second panel shows the doctor expelling blood from the syringe into a Petri...

Because they took forever to add a $1 tip to the total (as they indicate by saying it takes them a while to do the math)

nifty OP ,
@nifty@lemmy.world avatar

Right? If it’s grubhub or Ubereats I wouldn’t pick that customer again

nifty OP ,

Supplementing income isn’t the only reason to tip, but I agree it’s easier when the service provider just includes a fixed service charge for whatever service rendered https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gratuity

nifty OP ,
@nifty@lemmy.world avatar

, i respect the grind and understand life is hard out there for people just trying to get by

Exactly, if appropriate I would tip someone even if they’re adequately paid by their employer. Though I think it would make more sense if the minimum wage is raised instead. I also get why some cultures dislike tipping, so I just treat it on a case by case basis

nifty OP , (edited )
@nifty@lemmy.world avatar

Agreed, people got mad at me for suggesting literally the same hah ¯_ (ツ)_/¯

Edit: in their defense, I think they objected more to the idea that a delivery person should avoid anyone who doesn’t tip. I get why they’d feel that way, it’s understandable

The peer pressure based donation for enabling corporate tax evasion is BS. It should be disallowed because all it’s doing is letting big corps not pay their due taxes

nifty OP ,
@nifty@lemmy.world avatar

In my experience, no one has ever pressured me for a tip. But again, that’s just me so I feel bad if you’ve experienced that

I had a good landlord, so they’re definitely out there. Mine didn’t raise my rent more than $50 in a decade of living there, and was pretty great and quick about repairs. I am sorry others have had the experience they’ve had, and I think it’s more to do with private equity buying real estate, or some kind of landlord with 10+ units etc. I think the mom/pop landlord with the odd house they rent out when their family isn’t using it are pretty chill. I am sure there are examples to prove me wrong though

I get it, I almost always create a male character bc it’s different from me irl. I think part of it is when you’re you 24/7 you just want to play as something not you
