This. Anyone can view content online.

Training a visual model off those images requires feeding those images into a model, and that is not the terms under which you originally viewed them.

It's why OpenAI is currently facing tons of lawsuits it may legitimately lose in court.

Probably not though, they can just settle and pay a fee. Deep pockets.

Apple is bringing RCS to the iPhone in iOS 18 | The new standard will replace SMS as the default communication protocol between Android and iOS devices (www.theverge.com)

The long-awaited day is here: Apple has announced that its Messages app will support RCS in iOS 18. The move comes after years of taunting, cajoling, and finally, some regulatory scrutiny from the EU....

ocassionallyaduck ,

This is kind of true but misses the fact that RCS was intended to be a carrier standard, and carriers weren't going to fucking do it.

So after almost a decade of carriers docking around, Google fires a shot across the bow and just implements their own version, using their jive backend as a "bypass" of sorts. But like any closed platform, it only works with the same clients.

They can't open up their server without some basic agreements so they try to get Samsung inboard. That is a mess of red tape. So they roll out RCS to all messenger clients on newer Android builds and stupidly call it chats or something. When they separately run a product called Google chat.

Anyways, that's how we got here. Each company needs to have a RCS relay server now because carriers couldn't be assed to do their fucking jobs, and now the Apple RCS server will pass your messages to the Google RCS server using a standard... So dumb.

Its still superior to SMS and is now at least baked into every new android device and on by default, but since it is not using actual radio waves SMS is still going to be possible in areas where data isn't. So SMS will continue to limp along and exist, because fuck carriers.

ocassionallyaduck ,

I hope he wins, and the fine makes Microsoft's eyes water. Everyone need to slow the fuck down with this, and they won't until there are real painful consequences.

MS can drop billions on game company acquisitions like it's no big deal? Cool, give this guy 1 billion dollars for randomly singling him out and automated-accusing him of sex crimes.

Maybe then all the tech bros might pause for 3 seconds before they keep feeding shit into their models illegally.

ocassionallyaduck ,

Congrats in building stalking software right into the OS.

A bunch of abusive relationships about to get a whole lot worse when the other party can track literally everything they do.

ocassionallyaduck ,

You didn't read the article.

We do know the answers to these questions. And if I can use a 2 line script to exfiltrate all your screen data for days/weeks in under a few MB of data.

So better hope you, never, ever, ever run unauthorized or malicious code, because now it basically has a honeypot of top priority data, always stored in a known location and compressed for easy uploads.

ocassionallyaduck ,

Then don't believe one guy, read the other reports on the feature, or the reports from Microsoft's BUILD conference that confirm these details.

It's stored in the appdata folder in plaintext.

ocassionallyaduck ,

I don't know what's up with your setup, but this is untrue. I've used Firefox for teams in browser for years with no issues.

ocassionallyaduck ,

Sadly corporate environments mean there is not choice for many users.

ocassionallyaduck ,

Honestly no, I have a bunch of extensions but I never took specific action to make teams work. You do have to make sure popup are allowed and ublock and similar tools don't interfere with it, but it worked for me.

You might try grabbing a portable Firefox install from Portable Apps and testing that.

Linus Tech Tips (LTT) release investigation results on former accusations (x.com)

There were a series of accusations about our company last August from a former employee. Immediately following these accusations, LMG hired Roper Greyell - a large Vancouver-based law firm specializing in labor and employment law, to conduct a third-party investigation. Their website describes them as “one of the largest...

ocassionallyaduck ,

So, a charity should fund it?

Because the acuser cannot afford it. And you take issue with the company doing it. An unrelated 3rd party thst gains nothing wod literally just be losing money for no gain at all. So a non-profit or charity.

So you advocate for charities underwriting corporate sexual assault investigations instead of the companies involved?

ocassionallyaduck ,

Port it then, you coward, lol.

Winamp hasn't seen real development in 20 years, and was exclusively a windows app at that time. What're you expecting?

ocassionallyaduck ,

Netflix DVD by mail was actually peak.

Netflix streaming is also good, but DVD by mail was awesome to queue up movies and work through an intended set of watch items.

I would go hard for a cheap 5 disc physical Netflix again. $10 a month for 5 disc's at once, awesome.

ocassionallyaduck ,

Go back with a decent pay bump (obviously he needs them) and with a plan to bolt ASAP. Continue your job search while you collect a higher temporary salary.

Terrible move from Elon as it shows he has no negotiating power.

ocassionallyaduck ,

Oh yea, but you're already mentally out the door. You take extra cash and you just collect "easy money" while you shop around the resume or get you big moving plans finished up.

ocassionallyaduck ,

To do this without being a helicopter manager, state clearly to them what your goal is. Most employees will work with you if the end result is wfh without a nannycam. Explain you need a way to confirm work product in a way that management can approve of without being too invasive, and keeping on pace with in office work.

In truth, you should not care if they slack off half the day as long as they produce quality work product at a similar rate. Wfh is fewer interruptions and meetings, and means already they will have more "free" time. This is a management principle that is hard to accept, but insisting on the appearance of work is detrimental. Obviously this varies based on the type of work, but yours sounds like a software development situation. "so long as your reports are filed and your queue is cleared every 48 hours, your pace is up to you".

Give them the rope to hang themselves with. Tell them that's what you're doing. Maybe one dev prefers to go easy then crunch for 6 hours on the 2nd of that 2 day cycle, for example.

Ultimately you cannot teach people to be responsible but you get far more positive results from treating people with trust and positivity than with skepticism and monitoring. That makes you less a team and more "the other".

Obviously this advice may not apply in your situation but in general try where you can to apply this in principle.

ocassionallyaduck ,

That's fair. Still might be worth openly discussing that as a goal even if it's nothing you can act on now. Let them show competence on their own perhaps.

Anyways, you sound like you already have the right mentality. Good looking out for your teammates.

ocassionallyaduck ,

First time I accidentally click on one of these I'm going to shit thst post up so hard.

ocassionallyaduck ,

You can doubt all you want, but devs have had functioning alternative engines in dev environments for ages. Apple just would not allow them.

ocassionallyaduck ,

Again, this is why this law was such a big deal. Prior to this you were correct. Thanks to the DMA, you are wrong. Firefox will be running Gecko, and Vivaldi, Brave, Chrome, etc are allowed to ship their flavors of chromium.

UK Trial: Pornhub's Chatbot Halts Millions from Accessing Child Abuse Content (www.wired.com)

A trial program conducted by Pornhub in collaboration with UK-based child protection organizations aimed to deter users from searching for child abuse material (CSAM) on its website. Whenever CSAM-related terms were searched, a warning message and a chatbot appeared, directing users to support services. The trial reported a...

This is one of the more horrifying features of the future of generative AI.

There is literally no stopping it at this stage: AI generated CSAM will be possible soon thanks to systems like SORA.

This is disgusting and awful. But one part of me hopes it can end the black market of real CSAM content forever. By flooding it with infinite fakes, users with that sickness can look at something that didn't come from a real child's suffering. It's the darkest of silver linings I think, but I spoke with many sexual abuse survivors who feel the same about the loli hentai in Japan, in that it could be an outlet for these individuals instead of them finding their own.

Dark topics. But I hope to see more actions like this in the future. If pedos can self isolate from IRL interactions and curb their ways with content that harms no one, then everyone wins.

ocassionallyaduck ,

So your takeaway is I'm.... Against AI generative images and thus I "protest too much"

I can't tell if you're pro AI and dislike me, or pro loli hentai and thus dislike.

Dude, AI images and AI video are inevitable. To pretend that does have huge effects on society is stupid. It's going to reshape all news media, very quickly. If reddit is 99% AI generated bot spam garbage with no verification of what is authentic, reddit is functionally dead, and we are on a train with no brakes in that direction for most public forums.

ocassionallyaduck ,

You should probably research the phrase "protest too much" and the word "schtick" then.

I'm not trying to clutch pearls here, as another poster here commented this isn't a theoretical concern.

ocassionallyaduck ,

True. For obvious reasons I haven't looked too deeply down that rabbit hole because RIP my search history, but I kind of assumed it would be soon. I'm thinking more specifically about models like SORA though. Where you could feed it enough input, then type a sentence to get video content. That is going to be a different level of darkness.

ocassionallyaduck ,

Yes, but this is more about mitigating the spread of CSAM. And my feeling was it's going to become somewhat impossible soon. AI generated porn is starting to flood the market and this chat it is also one of those "smart" attempts to mitigate this behavior. I'm saying that very soon, it will be something users don't have to go anywhere to get if the model can just fabricate it out of thin air, so the chat it mitigation is only temporary, and the dark web of actual CSAM material will become overwhelmed and swamped in artificially generating new tidal waves of artificial CP. So it's an alarming ethical dilemma we are on the horizon of that we need to think about.

ocassionallyaduck ,

This is the illegal part. Firing them because they unionized.

It's almost certain they can prove Google still needs these positions and the firing was motivated by this corrupt motive, not a business decision.

ocassionallyaduck ,

I read about this, and it's the ads. Full wall animated ads.

I also instantly predicted this obvious outcome. And hope it happens go any place that installs them. Fuck billboards invading every inch of our lives.

ocassionallyaduck ,

That is not how the animation industry works, at all. Most creative art positions require demo reels and portfolios. But sure would be nice if animators were that valued a recruiter would hunt usenet for their old pirate samples.

Also worth nothing, especially in animation, your cuts in an episode are often going to be various 10 second shots spread between multiple episodes across a season. That's why demo reels make sense.

Explorer Patcher if you need a vertical taskbar. Otherwise MS has been gradually adding the most requested features.

Not justifying what's missing, but a lot of people didn't understand just how big an overhaul they performed on the core UI. Explorer file manager and the main taskbar GUI have both updated, and the taskbar GUI is a new one from scratch that carries over 98% of features.

This kind of deeper update was long overdue, and makes the experience using 11 on a mixed use tablet a lot nicer frankly, bringing 11 closer to a unified tablet/desktop OS as it needs to be.

It's even more stupid and deadly than it sounds.

Raspberry Pi is planning a London IPO, but its CEO expects “no change” in focus (arstechnica.com)

The business arm of Raspberry Pi is preparing to make an initial public offering (IPO) in London. CEO Eben Upton tells Ars that should the IPO happen, it will let Raspberry Pi's not-for-profit side expand by "at least a factor of 2X." And while it's "an understandable thing" that Raspberry Pi enthusiasts could be concerned,...

More of the same here. This is extremely depressing news.

It sucks that running a successful business can never be enough.

Prepare for Pi to start going closed source and fighting against "copycat" SBC boards. It'll take a generation to see the enshittification set in, but Orange Pi and other similar projects are going to be the winners in a strictly profit based comparison.

More to the point: the bean counters running the company need to be replaced with engineers who know what it is this company is doing and what they build. It's not an overnight fix, but so long as the C-suite is trying to go "lean and mean" every 5-10 years, this will happen again and cost lives.

That is probably a slam dunk (minor) discrimination lawsuit. Your circumstances of birth, including the date, are not something you can be judged for.

Follow up with your ID or Birth certificate and ask "Excuse me?"

It's official: note taking app with 0 advantages over just plain ass notes synced via cloud signs death warrant.

For real, FOSS software that saves to a file folder and does all of this exists. They are just chasing us into their arms.

Going forward, BMW says it will continue to offer subscription-based services but only for software options, like driver assistance and digital assistant services, which is completely understandable.

The fuck it is. You offer car features at time of sale. And if you want me to like your brand, at best you offer OTA or wifi updating for free to enhance the experience, and make me want to buy your next car.

You try and nickel and dime me for shit technology that has been around for 20 years, and I could give two fucks. I'll plug in my phone, ignore your entire. Infotainment and actively campaign for it to fail and blow up in your face.
