46MM Galaxy Watch here and I can get 24H or sometimes a bit more provided I switch it to night mode when I'm sleeping. Still using AOD, cont HR monitor etc. Yeah, this old thing is getting long in the tooth, but I came to it from WearOS, really don't want to go back.

Not a lot is appealing to me in the smartwatch market currently. Good for my wallet, I suppose.

octopus_ink ,

To a degree it depends on settings. But consider that I've been using this watch for 5 years or so, and I have all my settings more or less "maxed out" regarding consumption. I don't even have auto-brightness on because I always found it annoying for it to adjust when I flicked my wrist - I just have it locked at about 80%.

But yeah, most smartwatches that I've ever been familiar with are getting a couple days when new unless you turn off features. (Bear in mind the newest thing I have first-hand experience with is my original Galaxy Watch, and which I am currently still wearing) I want to say I was making it 48h + when new, but that was so long ago...

For typical smartwatches when I see impressive claims regarding battery life much longer than that, it usually turns out that the person has turned off one thing or another that I don't want to turn off.

Look at Hybrid smartwatches in general, and in particular some of the Garmin models (pack a lunch, there are a LOT of Garmin models, some very similar to each other) for super long battery life, I think.

All this is just IME, and I don't pay really close attention to smartwatch tech except peeking every couple years to see if there's anything that might convince me to move on from my Galaxy Watch. I do like some of the Garmin hybrid models, but I'm not sure I'd like them longterm.

Plus WOS is just better than tizen, hands down.

It's changed a lot since I moved off my Huawei then. And the primary reasons I went Tizen when I did were the glacial pace of software improvements and the shitty "upgrade" they announced to the SoC all the WearOS devices were using at the time. I don't recall the details of the crappy qualcomm "upgrade" aside from remembering that it really wasn't one in practice, and solved neither the battery life nor performance problems of WearOS at the time. (not even sure they were calling it WearOS then, IIRC they changed it from the original name around that time)

A used watch 5 pro (or just buy a new one) can be had for like $160. I can leave all my stuff turned on and I always get over 48 hours.

I'm not surprised a watch several gens newer is going to get better battery life than my original GW, but I don't find I'm fussed enough about anything about it to spend money on an upgrade currently.

I mean... I usually agree with the sentiment the comic is trying to convey, but OTOH the "My Opponent" in this case is Trump.

octopus_ink ,

Seriously the cybertruck stories have really made me question how much regulation there really is regarding car safety.

How are we, the public, watching this soup sandwich play out in realtime and there's nothing actionable there for regulators?

One more aspect of my faith in our governmental systems starting to take a beating on this one.

octopus_ink ,

Seriously. What would be surprising is if they were not. Proprietary System gonna Proprietary System.

octopus_ink , (edited )

Pretty much the conservative argument against civil rights in a single panel. To be clear, I don't think anyone is interested in "ruling" those poor stooges of the republican grift machine, but I think nothing scares them more than the idea of black folks (or women, or "the gays") in positions of equality or authority.

They fear that their own transgressions will be revisited upon them. That they might actually reap what they have sown.

octopus_ink ,

Yes yes, I knew someone would bring up the southern strategy. Thank you. Changes nothing. It's the same sorts of people being shitty in the same sorts of ways. Where they congregate at any moment in history is independent of that. They are always conservatives, and today they own our republicans.

octopus_ink ,

Sorry I was way too ready for a fight on that detail. 🙂

octopus_ink , (edited )

So in other words, very plausible deniability.

https://allthatsinteresting.com/heart-attack-gun

We had that tech in 1968. I'm pretty sure it would be a matter of a phone call and some change from the couch cushions for Boeing to create the recent outcome.

Does this mean they did it? No.

Does it warrant the reaction folks are having about it? Absolutely yes. (Edit - In light of their current troubles and the fate of the prior whistleblower.)

octopus_ink ,

How do I so strongly recognize this but can't recall what it's from!!??

octopus_ink ,

Does this mean they did it? No.

Does it warrant the reaction folks are having about it? Absolutely yes. (Edit - In light of their current troubles and the fate of the prior whistleblower.)

I stand by that statement, and don't feel like trying again to connect the dots on the relevancy of my example for you. Whatever you are arguing about is - not the same.

octopus_ink ,

Well that’s it. Case closed. The existence of a heart attack gun in 1968 proves Boeing killed 2 whistleblowers in 2024. Good job gang.

Literally no one has made that statement, including me, the guy who brought up the heart attack gun. Take a breath man.

octopus_ink ,

Plonk.

octopus_ink ,

Win2K was the last version of Windows I liked. By 2007 I'd had enough of their shit and moved to Linux. Each and every year since then has validated that choice, as desktop Linux has improved and Windows has enshittified further and further.

octopus_ink ,

I think we're years past the point where the frequency of memes about people saying "I use arch btw" has exceeded people actually saying "I use arch btw" by a wide margin. At this point I'm just waiting for this one to die.

octopus_ink ,

I use Arch btw was always a meme , literally no one ever said it unironically.

There was definitely a time when many folks regularly mentioned using Arch. It did have some novelty when it was new to newish. I was probably one of them.

octopus_ink ,

I mean, "all" is a pretty absolute statement.

octopus_ink ,

(which they cannot, the “audiophile” community is just delusional)

I don't consider myself an audiophile, but I'm still offended on their behalf.

Having said that, after futzing a bit with the eq I do love my Buds 2 Pro.

octopus_ink ,

Thanks for not being an asshole

Not sure that's what was happening anyway.

How about when you are the first person to discover there IS a deadly lookalike to chicken of the woods?

I get your point but yeah - mushrooms are not going to be my goto if I'm stranded in the woods, and it sounds like they really shouldn't be the goto of anyone not already an experienced mushroom forager before they end up stranded in the woods.

octopus_ink ,

This is a weird response to me.

This is the way. And I might add, Unix desktop.

Sure man, rock on. ✊

Let’s not start bikeshedding between FOSS Unix distributions out of dogmatic reasons (I’m sure you didn’t mean to specifically single out “Linux” here

Eh.. OP seems to be talking about their own setup. They probably "singled out" Linux because it's what they use.

I wish we would stop opposing “Linux” and other Unixes like BSD, Illumos, etc).

I oppose none of those things, but Linux isn't Unix.

(Usually the Unix folks are the ones at pains to point that out.)

octopus_ink ,

FYI -

  • You need to bear with it through the usual S1 growing pains
  • By today's standards it's almost unbearably 90s, especially during the first season (IMO)
  • It really does get great.
  • It made me cry at least a few times.

SG-1 was a great mixture of comedy and drama in sci-fi IMO, and while it's not my very favorite franchise, it's easily top 10 for me. If you haven't seen it before it's worth your time for sure!

octopus_ink ,

Personally I feel like the show really finds it’s legs in S3 but kicks it into high gear for S6.

Really I have to agree with that now that you mention it. I think it had been too long since I watched it. :)

I’m sure every fan has a list of episodes you can skip

I skip nothing on any show! I know people commonly do this, I just don't. If I'm watching it, I'm watching it warts and all. 😁

octopus_ink ,

Fair, I can definitely see how there would be a point of saturation!

octopus_ink ,

Wow, I thought for sure this was BS, but just tried it and got the same response as OP and you. Interesting.

Fairbuds are Fairphone’s proof that we really could make better tiny gadgets (arstechnica.com)

But of course we all know that the big manufacturers don't do this not because they can't but because they don't want to. Planned obsolescence is still very much the name of the game, despite all the bullshit they spout about sustainability.

octopus_ink , (edited )

I used up all my hate when Apple did it. I still think Apple lied about their reasoning (waterproofing and space), which pisses me off more than the other complaints, many of which I also agree with. (some of those reasons were even more valid when considering the overall state of the tech at the time)

However, at this point a big portion of the market has adjusted and accepted (to varying degrees), and that first change is so far in the past that I don't know that I can muster up a lot of hate for mfrs who are taking away headphone jacks today when instead of upending the market they are following market trends.

Having said that, I'd be willing to bet that a larger than typical percentage of Fairphone purchasers would really like to have a headphone jack.

edit - purchasers not purchases

Standard notes: what about don’t put all your eggs in one basket rule?

If the owner of the standard notes will now be a proton, doesn't that contradict this principle? I have a proton email account but I don't want it linked to my standard notes account. I don't strongly trust companies that offer packaged services like google or Microsoft....

What's the upside over self-hosted (and encrypted) Trilium, which is what I currently use? (I ask this not as a challenge, but out of curiosity.)

octopus_ink ,

Thanks, appreciate it!

octopus_ink ,

You even worked in "police exist to protect capital" at the end. Well done!

octopus_ink ,

My wife would never wear them again if I showed her this.

Tarallo - selfhostable FOSS Trello alternative (feddit.it)

Hi! For the ones of you that use Trello, I made a simple to use and host alternative in PHP. It's not a complete alternative like other projects, and I mainly made it to be able to host it on free PHP web servers while having control over data/attachments. It also support a basic importer for Trello JSON exports....

octopus_ink ,

I spent just a few minutes with it and I like it a lot. I swear it's more responsive than actual trello! :D

Note-taking app that looks too good to be true? - Siyuan

Recently stumbled upon this note-taking app called SiYuan, but it honestly looks a bit too good to be true(?). Has anyone here used it or got any experience with it? Trying to replace Obsidian is a difficult task, and I've been through almost all note-taking apps there are out there, however this one looks fairly similar....

octopus_ink , (edited )

Trilium? I don't know your requirements are, but it's what I use for about 3 years now. Self hosted sync server, browser or local client, encryption, and no third party services.

octopus_ink ,

I'm aware. Maintenance mode, not dead.

octopus_ink ,

Link this next time someone is complaining how unfair it is to refuse to federate with Threads.

octopus_ink ,

The usual argument against pre-emptive defederation goes something like, "Well we should wait to see what kind of influence they will be on the fediverse."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook#Criticisms_and_controversies

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawsuits_involving_Meta_Platforms

https://theintercept.com/2024/03/26/meta-gaza-censorship-warren-sanders/

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/03/netflix-ad-spend-led-to-facebook-dm-access-end-of-facebook-streaming-biz-lawsuit/

We know what kind of influence they will be. They will be the most anti-consumer, exploitative influence the law will allow, and probably a little bit more than that, because it's been their entire history, and every few days we get another headline confirming that it's who they are.

And while there is a lot they can do even if many instances refuse to federate with them, there's no good argument for going along willingly, IMO.

octopus_ink ,

I thought you were actually curious. We can agree to disagree.

octopus_ink , (edited )

You've missed out on some lively debate then.

Edit: In response to my very comment.

octopus_ink , (edited )

Did you?

Edit: Were you?

octopus_ink ,

My fingers didn't type what my brain was thinking, sorry. I can see how that makes no sense.

octopus_ink ,

:D I absolutely should have. I think I had at least a half dozen of these specific ones in physical form at one point back in the day.

Edit: Last time this came up I learned of this. 😀 https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLNYxu1LqkyT3Ihj7l2n2WSH0KlqOJaEio

octopus_ink ,

I think tabletop gaming and D&D are having a renaissance in recent years - I bet you could find folks to play with easier than you think.

I haven't played in decades myself, but my son does, and so does a good friend of mine (who is even older than me) and his kids, and seemingly half the people I know.

I would theoretically love to play, but I have other life circumstances that have required me to cut gaming time of any kind to 0 for awhile.

You should give it a shot if you can!

I love that there’s a reference to the Tom Hanks classic Mazes and Monsters in there.

That's been on my rewatch list for awhile. I don't think I've seen it since it was new. One of these days... :)

octopus_ink ,

I’m also concerned that defederating from Threads will make more Threads users than Mastodon users.

Already done, and by an order of magnitude at least. (probably many orders, I don't have the numbers at hand)

I mean, some idea of what they might do would be nice.

You can look at their entire history for that. And somewhere in this very discussion some other person has given a very plausible overview of their potential EEE approach. I'll add a link to that comment later when I have time to find it again.

But, I'm starting to realize that no amount of evidence is sufficient for folks who want to federate with Meta, and at the end of the day my freedom ends where yours begins, so although I will continue to advocate for defederation and flee any instance that does not make that choice, I very sincerely encourage you to do you.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook#Criticisms_and_controversies

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawsuits_involving_Meta_Platforms

Here's a couple recent individual ones:

https://theintercept.com/2024/03/26/meta-gaza-censorship-warren-sanders/

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/03/netflix-ad-spend-led-to-facebook-dm-access-end-of-facebook-streaming-biz-lawsuit/

The prospect of everyone and our parents using social media that is not completely beholden to Meta is exciting to me.

I firmly believe that hoping Meta isn't going to be the worst possible company they can this time is not the way to achieve that, and is in fact actively working against that future possibility.

I've been alive, adult, and working in IT for the entirety of the existence of Facebook, so I've had a long time to see everything I needed to see about them.

octopus_ink ,

This is an incorrect assumption, because

And somewhere in this very discussion some other person has given a very plausible overview of their potential EEE approach. I’ll add a link to that comment later when I have time to find it again.

In a non snarky way I say that if the dozens of actual past actions linked in the two wikipedia links, plus the recent events I linked, still leave you in doubt, I don't see how a plausible but still speculative EEE summary is going to tip you over, but I'll clap anyway if it does, so:

Quoting @Gestrid :

What’s the number of Threads users compared to Lemmy? If the number of Threads users greatly outweigh the number of Lemmy users, then we’d simply be drowned out by all the Threads posts. That’s part one of Embrace, Extend, Extinguish.

Extend adds functionality to Threads that Lemmy either can’t support or won’t support for a while due to development time. People migrate to Threads because Lemmy is “missing” functionality. Plus, though I’m not clear on the exact legal specifications, proprietary code can be added to open-source code, and the proprietary code would be copyrighted. In other words, Lemmy devs would have to figure out a way to interact with and mimic Threads’ proprietary code using open-source code.

Extinguish is when Threads’ support of Lemmy is eventually dropped. The users left on Lemmy have suddenly lost a huge amount of content, and they’re left with fewer users than before Threads enabled federation.

There are definitely limits to my optimism here.

I do feel a little bit bad being the table pounding pessimist in this circumstance, but I don't see how one can look at this company's history and come to any other conclusion. It frustrates me like few other areas of disagreement about tech do to imagine folks look at everything Meta has done and think we need to wait and see how they will handle this.

Regardless, I appreciate the conversation. :)
