Could it perhaps be specific models that are no longer manufactured? I was checking out the price I could expect for one of my old PSUs and found that it was apparently a particularly well liked unit for some reason, and so it's used price was a fair bit higher than expected.

It's not something specific about women, but people in general respond poorly to being constantly bombarded with fear porn. the only thing specific to women in this scenario is the flavour of fear porn being peddled. There are abundant examples of other flavours designed to antagonize other demographics throughout the media landscape.

You can use real scenarios as fear porn by hyper focusing on them, far beyond what's reasonable, and to the exclusion of everything else.

They actually are open source, and there is indeed a lot of material out there to help people with everything they need to build their own. The only part that is illegal to make on your own is the part with a serial number on it, for tracking purposes.

Smokescreen to get people who don't really understand computers to buy into a system which can be easily controlled by those who produce/own the physical devices involved, while hiding their tracks near perfectly.

Yea, we need to fight to make sure that the state-industrial complex tracking our every movement is focused on punishing OUR so-called enemies, as defined by a small handful of Internet based social clubs (controlled and operated by people we know next to nothing about).

Things like this make me wonder if the uncanny valley exists because we've previously developed computer technology in the past, and it destroyed civilization, taking with it everyone who couldn't easily distinguish between humans and AI.

It's hardly an idea that I only just formed from a headline. It's something I've been thinking about for a long time, which only seems to collect more support as time goes on. One of the most prominent events I can recall was when TwitchCon built a foam pit for people to jump into, with a single layer of foam blocks over solid concrete, then even after a girl broke her back in it they still kept going. Computers are doing something very weird to people's brains.

It's exactly the same way that "alt-right" became popular around 2015 originally to self identify as a life long liberal who felt they could no longer support the political left, but also weren't comfortable with fully supporting the political right. It was seized upon and redefined to remove those people's ability to succinctly identify their unique position, to maintain the artificial 50/50 left/right divide in the public's mind.

And yes I am aware that it was once used by some shithead nobody cares about before that, but I'm talking about it's popular use in recent times.
