Scarlett Johnasson's

Is it John-ass-on, or John-as-son?

The ugly truth behind ChatGPT: AI is guzzling resources at planet-eating rates (www.theguardian.com)

Despite its name, the infrastructure used by the “cloud” accounts for more global greenhouse emissions than commercial flights. In 2018, for instance, the 5bn YouTube hits for the viral song Despacito used the same amount of energy it would take to heat 40,000 US homes annually....

AI doesn't provide much benefit yet

Lol

I don't understand how you can argue that gaming provides a real benefit, but AI doesn't.

If gaming's benefit is entertainment, why not acknowledge that AI can be used for the same purpose?

There are other benefits as well -- LLMs can be useful study tools, and can help with some aspects of coding (e.g., boilerplate/template code, troubleshooting, etc).

If you don't know what they can be used for, that doesn't mean they don't have a use.

otp ,

Ah yes the multi-billion dollar industry of people reading garbage summaries. Endless entertainment.

See, I'm not even sure if you're criticizing LLMs or modern journalism...lmao

otp ,

Either you rent with a monthly fee, or you buy it and own it.

Of those two options, you know which one the publishers would pick...

Having a workaround doesn't mean there's no problem

ChatGPT Answers Programming Questions Incorrectly 52% of the Time: Study (gizmodo.com)

The research from Purdue University, first spotted by news outlet Futurism, was presented earlier this month at the Computer-Human Interaction Conference in Hawaii and looked at 517 programming questions on Stack Overflow that were then fed to ChatGPT....

otp ,

I've had lots of great experiences with ChatGPT, and I've also had it hallucinate things.

I saw someone post an image of a simplified riddle, where ChatGPT tried to solve it as if it were the entire riddle, but it added extra restrictions and have a confusing response. I tried it for myself and got an even better answer.

Prompt (no prior context except saying I have a riddle for it):

A man and a goat are on one side of the river. They have a boat. How can they go across?

Response:

The man takes the goat across the river first, then he returns alone and takes the boat across again. Finally, he brings the goat's friend, Mr. Cabbage, across the river.

I wish I was witty enough to make this up.

I appreciate the XKCD comic, but I think you're exaggerating that other commenter's intent.

The tech has been improving, and there's no obvious reason to assume that we've reached the peak already. Nor is the other commenter saying we went from 0 to 1 and so now we're going to see something 400x as good.

otp ,

Yes, and we never have and never will put lives in the hands of software developers before!

Tap for spoiler

/s...for this comment and the above one, for anyone who needs it

otp ,

Interesting! What did 4 say?

otp ,

In general, "The technology is young and will get better with time" is not just a reasonable argument, but almost a consistent pattern. Note that XKCD's example is about events, not technology. The comic would be relevant if someone were talking about events happening, or something like sales, but not about technology.

Here, I'm not saying that you're necessarily right or they're necessarily wrong, just that the comic you shared is not a good fit.

otp ,

Thanks for sharing!

otp ,

I don't think continuing further would be fruitful. I imagine your stance is heavily influenced by your opposition to, or dislike of, AI/LLMs

otp ,

"Help" with a time-off request?

Here's the help:

Sure!

otp ,

I wouldn't trust any organization that has "truth" in its name. It's like the car salesperson who says "Trust me" way too much.

And according to Media Bias/Fact Check, they've got a clear bias and are not classified as factual reporting.

otp ,

That does seem to be how the article (and Twitter comment) framed it, yes

otp ,

How the article framed it does not mean that's what the video was about

otp ,

I think the idea is that it's what makes a person "an Indian" and not something else.

Only a minority of Indians wear turbans, but more Indians than other people wear turbans. So if someone's wearing a turban, then that person is probably Indian.

I'm not saying that's true necessarily (though it may be), but that's how the AI interprets it...or how pictures get tagged.

It's like with Canadians and maple leaves. Most Canadians aren't wearing maple leaf stuff, but I wouldn't be surprised if an AI added maple leaves to an image of "a Canadian".

otp ,

Pokemon Go brought more users to OSM, so there was definitely some mutual benefit going on.

Vandals, yes, but plenty of legit contributers, too.

otp ,

Why would someone cry because you're wrong?

otp ,

More realistically, it'd be nerds who found a way to hack or cheat their controller to give them ridiculous speed, lol

otp ,

I never assumed that incognito mode did anything more than not save my history and searches in my browser. And maybe some other stuff like cache and cookies.

It took me a while to realize that less tech-savvy people wouldn't know about that stuff and assume that it meant that Google isn't watching you.

And unless you're very privacy-conscious, even your ISP knows where you get your internet porn from

Lol... referring to an entire population of people as terrorists, and also wishing for the country to control the narrative so it's easier for them to make more terrorists?

    otp ,

Not exclusively Russian though. I've seen it as a Ukrainian name, so that'd make sense

Can we all agree that whatever version of predictive text we have nowadays is crap, and has been for a long time?

I'm sick of random capitalisations mid sentence. I'm sick of common words being replaced by less common ones or even downright nonsense. I'm sick of it taking three attempts to successfully get the word I want. I swear it's been like this for five years or more. Can we have a better version yet, or at least the old one back?

    otp ,

At some point, "lets", "well", "ill", "id", and "its" (among many others) have stopped being words, apparently.

    otp ,

But there's a great sale on the new DuDu series right now! Come back in...

    otp ,

I recall studies that have found correlations to...maybe it was the size of brain structures? (Specifically the amygdala)

I wouldn't be surprised if there were something confounding that resulted in both a larger amygdala and some sort of change in facial structure.

But given that this article misrepresents the findings of the article, I wouldn't put too much weight on it.

    otp ,

The laws regarding a lot of this stuff seem to ignore that people under 18 can and will be sexual.

If we allow people to use this tech for adults (which we really shouldn't), then we have to accept that people will use the same tech on minors. It isn't even necessarily pedophilia on all cases (such as when the person making them is also a minor)*, but it's still something that very obviously shouldn't be happening.

    * we don't need to get into semantics. I'm just saying it's not abnormal (the way pedophilia is) for a 15-year old to be attracted to another 15-year old in a sexual way.

Without checks in place, this technology will INEVITABLY be used to undress children. If the images are stored anywhere, then these companies will be storing/possessing child pornography.

The only way I can see to counteract this would be to invade the privacy of users (and victims) to the point where nobody using them """legitimately""" would want to use it...or to just ban them outright.

    otp ,

I get the point you're tying to make. But minors taking nudes of themselves is illegal in a lot of places, because it's still possession.

I agree, and on the one hand, I understand why it could be good to consider it illegal (to prevent child porn from existing), but it does also seem silly to treat it as a case of pedophilia.

    otp ,

That’s a lot of words to defend fake child porn made out of photos and videos of actual children.

Uh...this is the second sentence or so (and the start of the second paragraph, I think)

If we allow people to use this tech for adults (which we really shouldn't)

So I'm not sure where you got the idea that I'm defending AI-generated child porn.

Unless you're so adamant about AI porn generators existing that banning their usage on adults (or invading the privacy of the users and victims with oversight) is outright unthinkable? Lol

I'm saying that IF the technology exists, people will be using it on pictures of children. We need to keep that in mind when we think about laws for this stuff. It's not just adults uploading pictures of themselves (perfectly fine) or adult celebrities (not fine, but probably more common than any truly acceptable usage).

    otp , (edited )

    That's a fair point.

We have sex offender registries that are for serious crimes where people can't live close to schools, need to be monitored, etc...examples of such crimes include...

    • Rape
    • Sexual assault
    • Urinating outside
    • Sending a solicited nude to a classmate

Lawsuit alleges Grindr illegally shared users' HIV status, sensitive data with third-party advertisers. (www.theregister.com)

Hundreds have joined a UK class action lawsuit against LGBTQ+ dating app Grindr, seeking damages over a historical case of the company allegedly forwarding users' HIV status as well as other sensitive data to third-party advertisers....

Download whatever looks good and forget about the name?

    otp ,

Not anymore, they tampered with it

    otp ,

Well, the genocide flag does seem to get suggested when typing "Israel"!

    otp , (edited )

Like with criminal justice systems, you either have to be okay with letting 1% of the bad guys go free* to make sure the good guys don't get caught, or you catch 100% of the bad guys but also mistakenly lock up innocent people.

    otp ,

... you never actually turn off your phone, huh? Haha

    otp ,

I'm pretty sure that viewing pornography can be harmful to young children.

Not all "minors", but some people forget that the phrase includes both 17 year olds and 4 year olds in some states...

    otp ,

I didn't assign blame to the website, or to anything. I just said that viewing sexual material can be harmful to children.

    otp ,

By being extra paranoid about their nefarious lawyers, haha

    otp ,

You could get engagement through digital audio files too, though.

But I'd argue that it doesn't affect the sound quality, but the enjoyment of the sound. The sound waves themselves don't actually change because we're actively engaging.

    otp ,

They emailed me too. Guess I was a power user, because I wasn't a mod!

I ignored it. It's especially egregious because I'm Canadian, and I think it's for Americans only.

Since they killed third-party apps, I think I've gotten more emails from them than the number of times I've signed in. Haven't even posted a single comment since RIF died.

    otp ,

Account age + recent activity might be one threshold, though I didn't get one for my mostly abandoned/much older account.

It might've also been karma, which I had a lot of. But I'll admit that I was probably a "power user" before the API changes, lol

    otp ,

Americans online regularly tell me that that's protected free speech down there! Haha

    otp ,

Yeah, it's usually the internet that makes it smart. The easiest way is to never let it connect to the internet at all.

The more complex, but potentially better, way to do it would be to let it only connect to certain parts of the internet that it needs (e.g. for updates?), but block it from communicating with other parts of the internet (e.g. where it gets its ads from) or your own home network.

I'm not an expert, but hopefully someone more knowledgeable comes along to help!

    otp ,

So TLDR; is: you either allow internet access or you do not, there's no "a little bit"

Good point! There would be "temporarily" though, which might work for updates. Of course, then it might just serve you the same ads forever that it pulls along with its update.

Obviously, you press Select before Start. It's dangerous to go alone.
