Install Linux on your desktops. If you have windows servers then what the hell are you doing anyway? Dump Microsoft

phoenixz ,

Ever tried using Microsoft online crap in a non windows browser?

Hell, Outlook doesn't work reliably anymore on chrome for crap sake, and I know this because at my work we're stuck with that crap. I use Firefox for Outlook, and Chrome for teams because teams doesn't work on firefox because of course and because fuck you we're Microsoft and how dare you not use edge on windows?

I'd love to switch us over but that is a project years away.

phoenixz ,

Ooohhh, OP is shitting on PHP, how very original!

Maybe next time, though, OP should read what OP posts before OO writes a title, as the content has nothing to do with PHP, its all sorts of languages (none of which PHP) and mostly javascript.

The content is pretty on point in general though, I've had the unfortunate luck of having dozens of developer candidates like that.

phoenixz ,

In my personal opinion, correct me if I'm wrong:

Systemd was created to replace the init system, then through extreme scope creep took over way more than wanted and needed, the main developer was "problematic" to say it politically correct, and in practice it has over complicated many super easy tasks to the point that I hate it. Other init systems were intuitive, systemd is all but.

Few weeks ago I setup a systemd server ssh server. Changing the port would be 5 seconds in changing a line in the sshd config, but now with the new and improved systemd I need to follow some nightmare documentation into creating systemd files in unrelated places and reload configs or something and I'm done with it

phoenixz ,

There is what they say they are in favor of, and there is what they really are in favor of.

They are in favor of apple getting all the monies, the end

phoenixz ,

Granted, I'm a developer and my dev ide already uses a good 10+GB, I have probably hundreds of tabs and windows open over 6 desktops... But I got 64GB, and I'm considering upgrading to 128, and these clowns think 8 is okay today? My development laptop of like 10 years ago has 8GB

phoenixz ,

Actually...

Most people doing their job quite literally are just doing their job, trying to make it to the end of the day. Believe me, even people in hr love their children, worry about the future, worry about their job, have hopes, fears and dreams and have to contend with shitty bosses.

Can you imagine one day the CEO coming in with a list of people that YOU have to fire, that YOU have to face, that will cry and yell in front of you as if you're the one who did this to them?

Most people are pretty okay, actually, and not remotely evil. They might do bad things because they're pressured or feel pressured, most people don't enjoy firing others.

phoenixz ,

Oh sure, but if you look a little beyond the surface you'd see people who also just want to keep their jobs, just like you.

It's easy to vilify those you don't like, it's hard to really look at them and see that they aren't that different from us

Adobe’s ‘Ethical’ Firefly AI Was Trained on Midjourney Images (www.bloomberg.com)

When Adobe Inc. released its Firefly image-generating software last year, the company said the artificial intelligence model was trained mainly on Adobe Stock, its database of hundreds of millions of licensed images. Firefly, Adobe said, was a “commercially safe” alternative to competitors like Midjourney, which learned by...

phoenixz ,

This actually leads to more conformist images with more errors, over time. Basically if an ai takes images from us, its gets loads of creativity, outputs less creativity, and more errors. So do they a couple of rounds and you indeed end up with utter crap.

phoenixz ,

So the obvious question here: is there a defederated toktok and instagram out there?

phoenixz ,

Install Linux and be done with this nonsense

phoenixz ,

If you like customizability, vwhy not try Linux with KDE? It's the definition of customizability.

phoenixz ,

normativity about aesthetic standards

Somebody needs to stop listening to slogans.

phoenixz ,

Oh no, somebody has a preference different from me! can't have that, now can we?

Roku has patented a way to show ads over anything you plug into your TV (arstechnica.com)

A patent application from the company spotted by Lowpass describes a system for displaying ads over any device connected over HDMI, a list that could include cable boxes, game consoles, DVD or Blu-ray players, PCs, or even other video streaming devices. Roku filed for the patent in August 2023 and it was published in November...

phoenixz ,

So now cables would need network access, what could possibly go wrong there?

phoenixz ,

Literally Canadians in the middle of winter. With a T-shirt and flip flops.

phoenixz ,

May be so, maybe this case actually warrants what Google does, and the headline doesn't match the article, the post is shit.

Still though, don't buy brand limited home automation, you will get screwed over sooner than later

phoenixz ,

I think these privacy protections should not plain out block data from sites like Facebook and or instagram, they should just feed them bogus nonsense data.

Roku explores taking over HDMI feeds with ads (www.lowpass.cc)

Roku is exploring ways to show consumers ads on its TVs even when they are not using its streaming platform: The company has been looking into injecting ads into the video feeds of third-party devices connected to its TVs, according to a recent patent filing.  ...

phoenixz ,

Samsung: never again

phoenixz ,

Jellyfin is exactly that, and open source, so you know you won't get stabbed in the back like with Roku. Out of curiosity, is Kodi also open source?

phoenixz ,

Use a pi hole to filter that shit by DNS

phoenixz ,

If, just for fucking once, they could use fully open source software to send that information directly to my mobile phone instead of using black box software to send all my info their corporate overlords, we might talk.

In principle these things aren't directly a bad idea. The fact that these asshats inserted themselves in the process is.

phoenixz ,

Great! Even more ways to fake like I care about my family.

I actually care abouty family, but doing it with Facebook is just posturing anyway

phoenixz ,

As per usual: Install Linux, problem solved.

phoenixz ,

We also suffered untill amounts Of illnesses and pain due to a variety of diseases and parasites, one will die within two years due to a paper cut that got infected, the other will die from hunger long before that.

But other than that its great!

phoenixz ,

I'd rather be alive, thank you very much

phoenixz ,

Just on the practical side of things though: the second you send out nudes, you lose control. I can save them, copy them, store them for 10 years and then post them on 4chan and there isn't a thing you can do about that to stop me or even punish me. It's easy to hide the source (me, in this example).

Yeah, you should have the right to do what you want, you should be able to be a pretty girl and walk naked in front of a bunch of fanatical Muslim terrorists if you want without having to feel afraid but, you know, not a great idea.

So you get to the point where you should be pragmatic and limit your wants and needs depending on the situation. Either that, or accept that trouble will find you

You may be offered a free premium Telegram subscription – but please don’t accept (archive.is)

Telegram is giving away FREE Premium subscriptions! All they need from you is to use your cell phone as a relay to text out their OTP codes! And the recipient of the OTP sees your phone number! What could POSSIBLY go wrong with this deal?...

phoenixz ,

Eeeeh, how? He's asking a valid question and making the valid assertion that it's not telegram's fault that some people try to scam you?

phoenixz ,

A ping of 100+ is slightly noticable (not counting gaming here), 200+ is very noticeable, 500+ becomes close to very annoying / unworkable for most cases. A 600 ping will be hard to even load pages. Streaming might might work, but a high ping like that usually comes with a high packet loss too, so I wouldn't hold my breath for Netflix even...

phoenixz ,

I just saw the "radio link internet" there

If your internet is beamed in over some radio signal somewhere then yeah, I get why it's so shitty. Wait until it starts raining!

What non-FOSS software have you been unable to quit?

For me, Google video search, Google books (Internet Archive is good, but doesn't always have the same stuff), Adobe InDesign (but in the process of learning LaTeX), and Typewise. As for the Google stuff, I liked Whoogle a lot, but almost all their instances seem to have been blocked or shut down. Also, apologies if this is...

phoenixz ,

Yeah, WhatsApp is amlove hate relationship for me.

It's seriously the best app out there, it just works, works nice and intuitive, has a web version (holy crap can't go without) and almost everyone is on there.

I'd love a Foss federated solution, but good luck with that if no one uses it

phoenixz ,

If it was open source then it still is. You simply clone the sources to a new project and continue

phoenixz ,

I think it's not the devs, but the managers who push the devs. It usually is. In Apple's case the managers want devs to desperately keep everything in such a a way that it only works with Apple, cant work with anything else or we might lose a customer! It probably won't have caused this particular problem, but you get the idea.

Google Allows Creditors to Brick Your Phone (lemmy.world)

I installed NetGuard about a month ago and blocked all internet to apps, unless they're on a whitelist. No notifications from this particular system app (that can't be disabled) until recently when it started making internet connection requests to google servers. Does anyone know when this became a thing?...

phoenixz ,

Nah, he's difficult to work with for sure, and rather extremist, but unfortunately he is a lot of right on the money. I wouldn't call that a pos

phoenixz ,

I think that even that is more bad phrasing on his end than him being a pedophile. Beyond weird opinions, there is no evidence at all that he is a pedo

phoenixz ,

If Linux is a religion like Christianity then I expect Jesus to appear in front of me right now and double my fishes.

Linux works, Christianity does not.

phoenixz ,

I also use my software to regularly murder the crap out of hundreds of people.

Oh, wait, that is grand theft auto and battlefield, and neither are open source, what have I done?

phoenixz ,

Yeah, could have worded that better. I've had some dependancy issues here and there over the years, especially in the early days (20+ years ago) but since like 5 years or so I haven't seen anything

phoenixz ,

Sounds like that tool was badly packaged then, as no package install should just bork up other packages, let alone your gui. A SEO tool definitely has nothing to do there, so yeah, bad package. Always check what the package manager tells you before installing

phoenixz ,

Not really.

I've been on Ubuntu for decades now, and I've done some crazy shit in my time. External repos indeed do increase a risk-of but it's exceedingly rare and easier to fix these days

phoenixz ,

Haven't had any major dependancy issues for years on Ubuntu. Maybe tiny things where I had to manually download a package somewhere because I use external repos, but those are easy fixes.

phoenixz ,

It's a personal anecdote, sure, bit I've seen this issue become a non-issue, really.

phoenixz ,

No.

Linux runs just-about-everything. Indeed, that does not cover 100% of windows users, but it damn well includes 95% of windows users who use windows for email and word processing and gaming, all of which runs perfectly fine or better on Linux.

Once those are on Linux, I'll shut up indeed but until then, here I am. I'm sick and tired of people happily giving money to a scam company who got where they are by lying and cheating, and then these same people asking me to help them out with their windows shit.

phoenixz ,

I was getting down voted because apparently everyone thought I means have a passenger do the navigation?

I meant that the driver should NEVER do navigation whilst driving because that kills people, there is no discussion there. So you either pull over, set the navigation computer and continue, or if you have a passenger, that passenger can do the navigation computer while you are driving.

This is not controversial, this is basic driving

phoenixz ,

Yeah, nobody but people like you make these false comparisons

phoenixz ,

Better just leave the annoying people be yeah. You're not changing opinions by reinforcing them
