Apple doesn't care about your privacy. They care about their image of caring about your privacy.

poopkins ,

What do you do with CDs? Genuinely curious about how they can be used in 2024 and surprised artists still have any printed.

I absolutely love Windows with the Linux subsystem. Coming from Mac it's genuinely terrific to not have to mess around with homebrew. Incredible to see how Windows came from being comically inferior to surpassing Apple as there has been absolutely no progression there in the last decade.

Regarding the sales process: in Tesla's early days, they received an exception to the requirement for needing to use dealerships. Generally this is very shady and is outright unfair towards other car manufacturers—even Rivian didn't get this same special treatment because lawmakers saw how Tesla abused it.

Tesla's growing monopoly on charging networks isn't something to be proud of, in my opinion, and neither is their proprietary charging cable. We need open standards.

Also, Tesla's mileage estimates are notoriously exaggerated. Perhaps technically you can get the claimed range if the entire trip is downhill…

    poopkins ,

That hasn't been my experience, but perhaps regulations are stricter in the EU.

    poopkins ,

It would be better if direct sales were allowed, but unfortunately dealerships are required by law in almost all US states. The shady bit is how Tesla got one of the few exceptions and continues to be exempt despite being among the leading car manufacturers in the USA. All other leading manufacturers are required by state laws to sell their vehicles through dealerships.

Tesla's NCAS chargers only began to allow non-Teslas to use it from 2019, so this is kind of recent history in terms of car ownership and network coverage.

    poopkins ,

Whoa, the owner acknowledged that the weather was to blame, not Tesla?!

    poopkins ,

We're up in arms about the discontinuation of a 12-year-old security camera? I think 12 years of support is more than reasonable.

There is a much more sinister issue that Google is trying to resolve with this: it's currently possible to stalk somebody by placing a tracker fob in their bag or on their car, so long as you know the victim's device doesn't support it.

Suppose some creeper with an iPhone is stalking a victim with an Android phone. So long as they use an Apple AirTag, the victim will never know they have a tracker trailing them wherever they go. And in reverse, the issue is the same.

Apple isn't concerned about this, because they hold a monopoly in the market they care most about and can leverage this as an iPhone-only feature. After all, so long as you have an iPhone, you'll be warned about an AirTag you don't own following you. Apple wants to leverage this as an exclusive safety feature and have no intention of allowing other devices to do the same.

Apologies for providing this background as I know that this goes against the circle jerk of accusing Google of infringing our privacy. Feel free to disregard this context of it being beneficial to our collective privacy.

    poopkins ,

Android has no way of knowing if a tag is "unauthorized" because Apple does not provision access to their tag network. You could, in principle, ignore tags that you know about, but you'd have to do it by identifying it by some arbitrary hexadecimal GATT ID.

As always, Apple wants to keep it that way, because it gives a poor experience on Android.

Theoretically (and I might be wrong about this), without attempting to reverse engineer how Apple assigns these codes, there would be no to differentiate AirTags, AirPods, iPhones, etc.

    poopkins ,

Yes, users have begun to be alerted of trackers—this is the recent change by Google as it relates to this post. An ongoing issue is, to my knowledge, that there's no way to identify what kind of device it is. Goggle's instructions literally suggest taking a screenshot of the serial number for later reference.

    poopkins ,

    Allow me to clarify:

    • Limited support for AirTags has been added to Android, that is the context of the posted article and the experience you are describing.
    • Apple neither supports account access on Android devices or provisions access to their tag network on behalf of linked accounts, so unless you have an Apple device, you cannot stipulate that a tag that belongs to you.

Consequently, the solution offered by Google appears to have been effectively built without Apple's support. Goggle's added support for AirTags despite Apple's cooperation—and support for other tracking devices—is a net positive for privacy.

Can you walk me through your logic that Google would sell your data? Who would they sell your data to, exactly, and how would that be financially advantageous to them?

    poopkins ,
    poopkins ,

As somebody who is very deeply integrated with ad integrations that include the ones listed in the article—AdWords and AdMob—there are no insights provided to me as an advertiser or any other bidder regarding individual data. Perhaps the EFF would like to research this topic in some more detail.

There is simply no data for me to obtain, no insights for me to dig into, no aggregated collections for me to unpack, no anonymized groups for me to attempt to drill into. With honest sincerity, I just don't know what the EFF is trying to accomplish with that article. I genuinely feel that this article is taking a native approach to the creative use of "sale" and undermines their credibility.

If an advertiser like me can't obtain this data that's supposedly for sale, then where is it being sold? We instead begin to navigate down a path regarding the choice of the user: do you prefer personalized ads or non-personalized ads? If you have chosen for personalized ads, then it will be Google and Google alone that will bucket you into groups to perform bidding towards interests that you group into.

Then coming back to the original question: where exactly does Google sell your data?

    poopkins ,

Precisely; for context, it was recently discussed in Dutch media how some of these e-bikes reach 60 km/h. Together with a culture of people refusing to wear bicycle helmets, there's certainly some more nuance and middle ground.

There needs to be some kind of solution, but doing nothing is not really an option.

3,000 people clicked a button out of curiosity or by mistake. If this is statistically relevant for their install base, there really is nobody using Brave. I have as many users randomly come and go into my game on a daily basis.

    poopkins ,

Was that the "if it's not Boeing, I'm not going" shirt? I think it can be fairly easily fixed with a sharpie. If you're feeling creative, you could also draw the wreck on the runway.

    poopkins ,

While I agree that this is a risk, I sincerely don't believe this happens often when interviewing at Google.

For one, employees are continuously reminded to avoid bias in anything that they do, from the way in which interviews are conducted to the design of products.

Googlers are reminded to avoid this on a nonstop basis through annual trainings or even artwork and signage throughout Google offices that target specific bias-awareness programs. In the restrooms, posters with detailed recommendations, often tailored towards engineering, make for an educational read while you're doing your business. Screens at the cafeteria show prompts challenging you to rethink assumptions. Dedicated teams are involved in performing reviews of proposals and code solely from the perspective of inclusivity.

I've never seen anything regarding "desirable traits" as part of a job listing. Hiring managers provide a job description that is reviewed to avoid bias, and pass along specific requirements for education and professional experience to recruitment teams. Recruiters take a first pass at CVs for those, and I'm honestly not sure how some kind of personality trait could even be distilled from a CV. Once a candidate that fulfills the minimum requirements is matched, they are set up to discuss other requirements with the recruiter, like relocation and timelines. I don't recall from my own experience ever being asked anything aside from these practicalities.

For interviewing specifically, there are multiple steps needed to qualify as an interviewer, each of which puts a heavy emphasis on avoiding bias. The interview question itself needs to be vetted by a dedicated team and interviewers usually select their questions from the pre-vetted ones. Prior to performing your first interview you need to be doubly shadowed with topics like avoiding bias in mind. When asked to perform an interview, the details about the role that the candidate is applying to are provided and the interviewer is required to review the CV themselves ahead of time. As evidence of this, you'll see that the interviewer will often match items from the CV against the listing to give the candidate the opportunity to expand on it and offer more detailed insights.

Rating the interview is performed within explicit rubrics, each of which with detailed descriptions. There's not an option to simply reject a candidate—interviewers need to select options from these rubrics and provide evidence. This is in part why you will see interviewers vigorously taking notes during an interview.

The first phone screen has more relaxed requirements as a general confirmation that the candidate exhibits the skill level expected at the listing's minimum requirements.

There are at least four in person interviews that then follow, performed by different interviewers. These results are reviewed by a hiring committee who makes a final decision solely based on the evidence with no insights into the associated candidate.

I have personally never worked at a company that is so meticulous in avoiding confirmation bias. In one smaller company that I worked at, I was the only interviewer and the sole decision maker for a candidate. Honestly, I cannot envision how Google can do better than they currently are with hiring.

I believe that the frustrating thing about getting hired there is simply the high bar and disparity between the high supply of candidates and the relatively low offering of positions. When you're prematurely rejected after submitting your CV or you're rejected after interviewing, remind yourself that you aren't necessarily unqualified or that the interview was unfair, but that many qualified candidates might have already applied, or the head count may have been removed, or an internal transfer took place or some other reason unrelated to your skillset.

Ironically, I've been downvoted for saying this in response to somebody sympathizing with my previous downvoted comment that was expanding in support of somebody's highly upvoted comment with some background.

I think the general sentiment on Lemmy is that any comment reply must surely be in disagreement and receives an automatic downvote. Mostly I visit the comments for discourse and upvote interesting threads of conversation.

In my opinion, really there should be no downvote button.

I find it intriguing that you're only just now discovering the challenge facing many smartphone users in the United States, where the use of iMessage is dominant.

The problem isn't with 1:1 chats, but with being excluded from group chats. If everybody is chatting on iMessage, I'm sure you can find the challenge in getting everybody to use your preferred alternative.

As every musician knows, exposure is always better than payment! This is why you shouldn't offer payment to musicians at your wedding, since they're getting great exposure already. /s

    poopkins ,

It's really not that different. The main difference is the audience size. For an independent musician selling merchandise, it would be equally insulting to them to tell them that they will be repaid in exposure if they give you one for free.

Making a copy of something "to see if you'd enjoy it" or because it's somehow great for their exposure is mental gymnastics to justify piracy. Let's just call it intellectual property theft and stop beating around the bush.

    poopkins ,

The entire goal of my comment was to avoid mincing words. As somebody who has first hand experienced copyleft violation, it sure doesn't feel different on the receiving end. I feel this very personal experience is equivocal to copyright infringement. I'm not licking any boots—thanks for that accusation.

It's easy to excuse illicit behavior from your armchair by gaslighting with the choice of words, because after all, violating copyright is just sticking it to the man, right? In truth, I feel that my software was stolen for profit and just for me as the little man, there's no other word that comes to my mind than "theft."

    poopkins ,

Lovely, so your rebuttal is that not only is my emotion wrong but my software sucks, too. I would suggest putting yourself in my shoes and envisioning what a shitty thing that is to say.

To offer a bit of background: the clone my game published itself on Google Play with ads removed. Aside from simply the confusion of a game with verbatim the same name, this further entices users to install it, because Google Play displays a label when an app contains ads.

What is the worth to a user? This is a terrific question, and I have spent years narrowing down the right valuation of ad content and in-app purchase pricing to remove ads. The game currently has 15M historical installs with fairly industry standard retention rates, so it can't be completely off. But the thing is, that valuation will always be higher than 0.

So where does the steal come from? The cloned app only offered the ad-free experience long enough to gather enough installs, to then revert the change with a swapped out AdMob account number.

I think most of this has been offset by that change now as I've seen a similar growth return to my app. But those losses in the interim period are gone forever. Somebody took my code base, republished it in blatant violation of GPL, causing me to lose revenue. I feel robbed and your apathy genuinely perplexes me.
