Google's "Manifest V2" Chrome extension phaseout next month is expected to impact the original uBlock Origin extension, which still uses the V2 framework and has 37 million users (www.theregister.com)

The new MV3 architecture reflects Google's avowed desire to make browser extensions more performant, private, and secure. But the internet giant's attempt to do so has been bitterly contested by makers of privacy-protecting and content-blocking extensions, who have argued that the Chocolate Factory's new software architecture...

Stop doing magnets.

Inanimate objects were never meant to be attracted to each other.

Years of sticking yet no real world use found.

Wanted to join things just for a laugh? We had a tool for that it was called glue.

"Magnetism and electricity are two sides of the same coin” "attraction decreases with the inverse square of distance” - statements dreamed up by the utterly deranged.

Look at what magnematicians have been demanding your respect for all this time with all the funding we have given them.

"hello I would like an invisible force please"

They have played us for absolute fools.

Hey!
I like gummy bears and carbonara (not together though).

These algorithms are sold as almost prescient oracles that know our preference more than we do.

Perhaps people who watch this also watch that because that's what you recommended.

There's videos on YouTube that have been pushed on me over & over even when I click not interested.

prex ,

Let's be honest: neither of us have tried it.

Please please please: you first.

prex ,

Yeah I heard that somewhere. Maybe I'll look it up later...

Nice job mirroring the images so they are facing the right way.

An AI startup made a hyperrealistic deepfake of me that’s so good it’s scary (www.technologyreview.com)

Thanks to rapid advancements in generative AI and a glut of training data created by human actors that has been fed into its AI model, Synthesia has been able to produce avatars that are indeed more humanlike and more expressive than their predecessors. The digital clones are better able to match their reactions and intonation...

Instagram Advertises Nonconsensual AI Nude Apps (www.404media.co)

Instagram is profiting from several ads that invite people to create nonconsensual nude images with AI image generation apps, once again showing that some of the most harmful applications of AI tools are not hidden on the dark corners of the internet, but are actively promoted to users by social media companies unable or...

Surely in a liberal democracy enfettered capitalism is restrained by laws.
I think a big problem we have now is a combination of regulatory capture & (sometimes AI generated) targeted, emotional, populist advertising by political brands.

"we have been trying to contact you about your car's extended warranty"

Free speech (& freedom of association) are super important to a lot (most?) of us.

Unfortunately some people abuse this right, making the argument that they should be free to remove others freedom.

The paradox of tolerance is a highly recommended read written by the same guy who made falsifiabilty the cornerstone of the scientific method.

Why can't all induction videos be like this.

They played it when I got my ticket.

prex ,

So we're good to build solar panels then right...

...right?

You keep posting & I'll keep upvoting

In Australia we only have two options in the lower house. One of them is pretty close to driving off a cliff.

Things could always be better (I personally find with their recent car emissions legislation a bit weak) but our current government is doing OK.

Threads is automatically hiding comments that mention Pixelfed (mastodon.social)

For anyone wondering if Threads and Facebook at large will be a fine neighbor in the space and compatible with other apps/services in the fediverse: they’re already automatically hiding comments that mention Pixelfed https://mastodon.social/@dansup/112126250737482807

You don't like a bunch of people shouting at each other across a cafeteria?
It kind of explains why I never got twitter either.

Yay!
Love that Streisand effect.

That would be Hanlons razor.
I have no idea whether it applies here.

Emotion-tracking AI on the job: Workers fear being watched – and misunderstood (theconversation.com)

Emotion artificial intelligence uses biological signals such as vocal tone, facial expressions and data from wearable devices as well as text and how people use their computers, to detect and predict how someone is feeling. It can be used in the workplace, for hiring, etc. Loss of privacy is just the beginning. Workers are...

As an Australian: I feel this in my soul. but mostly my eyes.

Is there really no alternative in shampoo & disposable coffee cups?

I understand that these chemicals do have some outstanding properties but that doesn't mean unfettered production & use.
Any risk assessment of a potential use really should include 100% resource recovery & disposal or recycling.
This could have been done years ago but if industry can't self regulate then bans it is.

These chemicals make silent spring look like, um, er, weekend at Bernie's?

prex ,

Good old copper is pretty hard to beat for a high temp/pressure (or vacuum). Chemical compatibility can be an issue though.

Viton gets used a lot & I'm struggling to think of alternatives to it.

prex ,

The tools are OK & getting better but some people (me) are more worried about the people developing those tools.

If OpenAI wants 7 trillion dollars where does it get the money to repay its investors?
Those with greatest will to power are not the best to wield that power.

This accelerationist race seems pretty reckless to me whether AGI is months or decades away.
Experts all agree that a hard takeoff is most likely.

What can we do about this?
Seriously. I have no idea.

prex ,

The state always has the final say.
In a liberal democracy all we can do is vote, campaign & support the best (or least worst) people to make these decisions.
