Idealy you want a server that runs all the time and some kind of a player connected to projector for streaming. You can use your rpi for server, but NUC sounds better since it probably has SATA or m.2 port for storage. Raspbian or Ubuntu doesnt matter much since both are Debian based and setup should be simmilar. Look into servarr if you are interested in automated downloads. Then get Jellyfin for Netflix like experience with your local library. Most clients support Jellyfin player and Im using android TV stick. I have just ordered ChromeCast with Google TV 4K to replacce my old 1080p Xiaomi TV stick. You can also install Netflix app on any Android device.

It is also possible to plug your server directly to projector via hdmi, but then you have to install server apps together with client apps on the same machine. I guess you need a wifi keyboard and mouse for remote control. Having 2 devices is better IMO, but it should work as single device.

Rpi or NUC can also be used as a player, but got no experience in setting that up and Android box is better solution for me anyway

rambos ,

I dont have the same usecase, but BookStack will check most of your boxes

2W is insane. I wonder how much it actually drains from the wall.

My server idles at 30-35W and turning it off for 6 hours at night (cheaper electricity) would save like 4€ a year. Its cheap here tho

rambos ,

I wonder where that extra 5 is coming from

Most likely PSU efficiency because they are bad on super low power. Still insane, 7W is nothing

‘My whole library is wiped out’: what it means to own movies and TV in the age of streaming services (www.theguardian.com)

*What rights do you have to the digital movies, TV shows and music you buy online? That question was on the minds of Telstra TV Box Office customers this month after the company announced it would shut down the service in June. Customers were told that unless they moved over to another service, Fetch, they would no longer be...

rambos ,

No scripts and it was more like 30 hours on my side, but its worth!

rambos ,

At idle, my latest 5-drive setup draws 20 watts

That's super low. What drives do you have? Are your drives spinning down?

rambos ,

If you need it for Android than try TiviMate. Its a payed app (annually or lifetime), but its the best one I found. Free version should work enough to try it out. I got lifetime and love it, but sometimes EPG doesnt work (could be issue with my provider tho)

rambos ,

Oh ok, I've never seen something like that. Let me know if you find a solution

rambos ,

Yeah, that will work. It sounds like answer to OPs question, but I have no clue why would someone need that unless there is no client app for that device.

rambos ,

That confuses me as well, I guess they changed docs in meantime. Anyway, here is my working env:

Im no expert, but will share my experience. I used to host (2 years) on rpi4 4GB and can't recommend because it was painfull with USB drives. It works fine for many peeps, but I ended up using it as 2nd DNS server.

Eventually I built DIY desktop PC (a year ago) with celeron G3930 (with quick sync) and no GPU. Runs perfectly fine for multiple 1080p streams, but I never tried 4k. Its dirt cheap hardware and its much better than rpi (imo) because it has sata ports. It runs 30-40 services ans drains around 30W (with 2 SSDs and 1 HDD) from the wall

rambos ,

Feels like you want a regular Immich auto upload and a custom script that deletes old images from your phone. I can't help with that script, but maybe also I missunderstood what is your goal

rambos ,

You can use external libraries in immich. You just point to any folder on your disk and you can see everything, but can't edit files. Timeline, maps, face recognition, search,...everything works and you can still keep folder organized images.

Personally I use both. Auto upload everything from my phone (camera, screenshots, etc) and also using external library as folder structured pictures from nextcloud. It doesn't create albums automatically tho

rambos ,

Don't expect albums in immich after upload. Immich will just put everything in timeline (by default) and you should make albums manually.

Also, make sure you have exactly the same app version as server

rambos ,

For gym next to me you need smart card and also fingerprint to enter 🤣. Im happy I dont do any workouts

Based on a true story (lemmy.world)

My OS is on a 512gb M.2 drive, but the main storage on my laptop was a 1TB HDD, it started making noise about 2 weeks ago so I backed everything up onto a 1TB SanDisk USB SSD. This afternoon it got very clicky when I booted it up after work and icons for a few games I had stored on it, like KSP and YUZU, disappeared from the...

rambos ,

Just remember everything and you dont need a backup

Im using wireguard VPN. You have to setup VPN server (using your DynDNS address, but duckdns in my case), open wireguard port in your router and configure each device that needs access. Reverse proxy is not needed, but I have it so I can use jellyfin.example.com instead of 192.168.100.40:8096. I use NPM (nginx proxy manager) with awesome GUI that can create lets encrypt certificates. I also use piHole for local DNS server

rambos ,

Not sure is it same, I don't use tailscale, but using pure wireguard. In my experience battery drain is not even noticable, but staying connected is not smooth as I'd like. I tried to keep active VPN all the time, but then sometimes I just notice my internet is not working ( I have disable or restart VPN connection). It could be issue with my phone (Android), missconfig or something else, but I switched to manually enabling VPN every time I need it. Not amazing, but few clicks every now and then is more than acceptable for my use case

rambos ,

First time im not completely sure how to proceed with update. This part is unclear to me:

Unfortunately there isn't a "proper" way to export a docker volume.
The recommended method is to mount the volume and the directory (you want to copy your data to) to an arbitrary container, get a shell inside that container and copy the folder manually.

I know how to stop the container and dump db, but need some help here

rambos ,

Thx ill give it a try

rambos ,

I thought its Finamp that works with Jellyfin. Is that just alternative of Symfonium?

I don't stream music often, but never had issues with Finamp

rambos ,

Alternatively you can just use external library and point it to nextcloud photos folder. That way you can't edit or delete files in immich, but you can see them just like any other picture. I upload everything from my phone to immich, but still have some folder organized photos in nextcloud.

rambos ,

It mix the photos together

rambos ,

If I understand correctly, that would happen only if you upload same files to both nextcloud and immich, but I dont see a reason to do that.

rambos ,

Whats the difference between using Revanced or NewPipe?

rambos ,

While you have to open a port for wireguard, it doesnt respond to anything other than your clients with a key. It should be safe enough without any maintenance, but security updates are always a good idea. If you don't want to open port there are alternatives like tailscale or zerotier, but I have never tried them

rambos ,

Im usually updating containers using portainer:

  1. Stop container
  2. Recreate (Re-pull image checked)
  3. Done

But some containers give error, so I have to:

  1. Delete container
  2. Redeploy the stack
  3. Done

It might be useless for your problem, but posting this just in case. For the same reason Ill try dockge and see if updates are easier

Qbit + VPN in truenas?

I'm trying to figure out how can I install a VPN on truenas that hides my IP. I have tailscale running so I can remotely access Nextcloud and manage it doesn't hide my IP. Wouldn't really throught on using it but my country recently published a law to lick Big Corpo in the ass better, the fines are pretty big so that's why I'm...

I'm getting 60+% of my bare network speeds.

Check if your CPU usage is at 100%, its probably too much for your CPU just like mine. Getting 180-200 Mbps using gluetun and 320 without a VPN

rambos ,

But gluetun is the way 😉

Massive Thank You

I've been at this self hosting stuff since Christmas and at every step of the way, I've come asking for help and advice from this community (and the related ones) and everyone has been super generous with their knowledge and guidance. I am extremely humbled by the kindness you have all given me. Shit, I'm even grateful for when...

What is a simple server solution for Jellyfin and Nextcloud?

I have a really bad "server" (just a laptop) that runs Fedora Server and uses Docker Compose to host Jellyfin. It has been very annoying to update (the web GUI for Fedora doesn't even work half of the time), updating is painful, and it's a pain to manage. I am trying to redo my entire setup, so I will be getting a NAS to store...

rambos ,

I use portainer (also docker container) to manage all containers, even tho sometimes I have to use terminal. Few portainer alternatives also exist, but forgot the name. You can also setup watchtower for automatic updates if thats something for you. Im running Debian 11 and never tried casaOS or simmilar, but I dont think it matters what OS you use if its working. I have installed OMV on the same machine for NAS features

rambos ,

Everyone is being polite, while we are the only ones who are amazed by our newborns 😀

rambos ,

I have daily backups (cron job) using Kopia for important files only. Backups are stored at Backblaze B2 and also local storage. Doing recovery tests every 1-2 months and 🤞

rambos ,

Im no expert and Im not trying to protect crypto, but this is bullshit. Its a wild market and there is a lot of scam going around it. Its like saying ebay or aliexpress is absolutely a scam. Im owning crypto for 8 years and while I did experience a scam (nicehash), most of the experience was not like that. Was mining, trading, bought loads of appliances and computer components, withdrawals...

Dont have a good suggestion for OP tho, but maybe local forums have trade topics where you can find a seller and meet them in person. Its been much easier 5 years ago, but seems like almost everyone is asking for ID nowdays

rambos ,

Hehe, I like your theory, but here is mine:

There are two people, those who bought bitcoin and those who didnt. Who ever bought it, made a profit because bitcoin is at all time high price right now 🙃

How should I do backups?

I have a server running Debian with 24 TB of storage. I would ideally like to back up all of it, though much of it is torrents, so only the ones with low seeders really need backed up. I know about the 321 rule but it sounds like it would be expensive. What do you do for backups? Also if anyone uses tape drives for backups I am...

rambos ,

I use Kopia to backup all personal data (nextcloud, immich, configs, etc) daily to another disk in the same server and also to backblaze B2. Its not proper 321 but feels good enough. I dont backup downloadable content because its expensive

rambos ,

Immich doesnt feel like beta at all, its amazing, its better than google photos imo. Nextcloud is also great, but nextcloud photos not so much

rambos ,

Im using immich for less than a year and there were few breaking changes. Im updating manually and I think its quite easy to follow their instructions. They also push warning message to clients before breaking change happens. But yeah I know what you mean, it can be annoying if you are auto updating

rambos ,

If you go with dashboard approach, I would suggest Homepage

rambos ,

I bought Seagate 12 TB refurbished for 120€, I dont know is that a good deal, but that thing is noisy! Working fine tho. Its from amazon.de and they have 4TB WD blue for 70€, also refurbished. Yeah its not cheap imo

rambos ,

I was thinking how loud it can be, but now I know 🤣 it cost 50% of new WD red and that makes it a bit less noisy

N100 Mini PC w/ 3xNVMe?

Not sure why this doesn't exist. I don't need 12TB of storage. When I had a Google account I never even crossed 15GB. 1TB should be plenty for myself and my family. I want to use NVMe since it is quieter and smaller. 2230 drives would be ideal. But I want 1 boot drive and 2 x storage drives in RAID. I guess I could potentially...

rambos ,

While I agree 25W is not much, I pay around 1€ for 1W a year (Croatia) and I know there are countries that pay way more thn that. Still, we are talking about power that is close to SBC consumption, you cant go much lower. I think number of devices (drives etc) are more important than actual CPU idle power

rambos OP ,

Thx, Ill read that, it looks promising

rambos OP ,

Thank you! This will be more clear after more research I hope. My understanding of docker networks is still meh...gonna change it now

rambos OP ,

Oh rly? Im still reading about what others said and feels like I can still continue with docker. Ive heard about kubernetes many times. Even tho some people use them on single node, isnt that made for multiple nodes setup? I have to learn more about kubernetes

rambos OP ,

Will check, thank you
