wonder if they were not aware that it was possible or whether they were lying. I'm not sure which one is worse.

They knew it was possible,.although it obviously wasn't intentional.

The only way this can happen is if they hold copies of the keys used to encrypt/protrect your traffic, and can give them to anyone at any time. Or if there's no keys at all, and someone simply needs an ID to pull the right stream. Something like your password isn't required to make the key useful (or they're storing/using it in a reversible way). And anyone that compromises them can access whatever they want.

Unfortunately I dont know if anyone that does "cloud" camera stuff, including Reolink (and pretty much all of the other consumer camera makers) are any better here. I'm not sure that they're as bad, but I bet most are. Clearly providers like Ring are.

Roku wasn't breached. They reported that a bunch of people who had reused passwords from other breached sites were compromised.

ripcord ,

The TOS had nothing to do with having announced that some peoples' accounts had been compromised due to password reuse from other hacked sites. People just started conspiracy theoryin'

Fewer people are using Elon Musk’s X as the platform struggles to attract and keep users, according to analysts (www.nbcnews.com)

Data from two research firms and figures published by Musk and X suggest a deteriorating situation for X by some metrics. Musk has marketed it as the world’s “town square,” but in number of users it continues to lag far behind social media rivals that focus on video, such as Instagram and TikTok. ...

General Motors Quits Sharing Driving Behavior With Data Brokers After Backlash (www.nytimes.com)

The decision followed a New York Times report this month that G.M. had, for years, been sharing data about drivers’ mileage, braking, acceleration and speed with the insurance industry. The drivers were enrolled — some unknowingly, they said — in OnStar Smart Driver, a feature in G.M.’s internet-connected cars that...

Usually here it's not a good thing because nothing is allowed to be good. Was the same on a lot of Reddit, too. Like, the upliftingnews subreddit comments were the worst for it.

ripcord ,
@ripcord@lemmy.world avatar

Somewhat true, but there were a lot of genuinely good "new development will do X" or "Millionaire sets up foundation for Y". Those invariably were filled with top comments about "sure this will make food more affordable in X, but what about (mostly or totally unrelated bad thing)??" or "this is a step in the right direction, but it doesn't immediately solve all problems!!", which were exhausting and useless. For a whole bunch of people, Nothing Can Ever Be Good.

You know, like a bunch of comments in this thread.

This thread is the first time I've seen "frfr", I guess another data point that I'm old now.

Im guessing it's "for real, for real"?

I'd love for that to turn out true, but so far the signs aren't good.

This is a Wendy's?

ripcord ,
@ripcord@lemmy.world avatar

You know, it just occurred to me that it'd probably be useful if there were providers providing and maintaining instances as turnkey operations. Most organizations won't want to host themselves, but might still want to pay for a (reasonably cheap) instance.

Anyone know what commercial options are out there? A really quick search didn't turn up anything for me.

Nice, thanks!

Man, people love to make up conspiracy theories.

The article explains the motivation, which is also bad and plausible. There's no need to pull stuff out of your ass to explain it too.

    Poverty only matters to some people when it happens to them.

    There's a lot of people with empathy too.

    Would never ever ever happen.

    Building a PC is something like .1% the effort IMO.

    Edit: in fact, what about it do you find pretty hard? I can't think of anything I've ever done that made me frustrated enough that I felt like I needed to walk away. Or even took particularly long. Maybe I'm just building crappy machines or something.

    ripcord ,
    @ripcord@lemmy.world avatar

    Are they?

    They charge for the stuff that actually requires server infrastructure after 3 years, I believe. Which is the one case that seems reasonable to me as long as it's not gouging. But I hadn't heard about anything else.

    ripcord ,
    @ripcord@lemmy.world avatar

    At the very least I believe the only thing they're currently doing is Bluelink (remote find your car, start car over the Internet, etc). But maybe there's something they started in the last 6 months I haven't heard about.

    ripcord ,

    In the US we used to at least be able to reply on CA to pass laws to prevent a lot of this shit, which ended up benefitting most of the rest of the country. But they've been real tolerant/lazy too.
