Just for info, in case you don't know... the phrase "Have you tried turning it off and back on again" is (or at least originally was) a reference to British sitcom, The IT Crowd.

The show follows the IT department of a largish company and whenever anyone has any kind of computer problem of any sort, the advice given is to turn it off and on. Surprisingly this actually works most of the time.

So, I don't think the OP was trying to annoy you, just make a pop-culture reference that they assumed you would get :-)

@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, that's true. I don't know why I said "originally". I guess I meant that its recent popularity can likely be ascribed to TITC. But you're right, it was a thing before that.

Agreed, it's infuriating. As are Skype's continual efforts to get me to follow interest channels. Why can't it just be a communications app, and leave it at that? Aaaaarrrggghhh!!!

It's a work thing for me, I wouldn't use it otherwise.

I find it useful for what it's actually meant for, but they keep trying to force other functionality into it, it's so frustrating.

Shudder...

In Chrome, ctrl+shift+n opens an incognito window. It's ctrl+shift+t to reopen a closed tab, and repeat that if you want to reopen more tabs.

sanguinepar ,

It's the "to" in the line above that's the problem, I think. Should be "too".

Wouldn't they have milk available for coffee? Unless they only offered cream, I guess.

Either way, silly that you couldn't order some.

sanguinepar ,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Well yeah, exactly.

@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Most definitely.

I've not had it, but someone (who also likes regular Guinness) told me that Guinness zero was genuinely great. Need to check it out sometime.

If you want to experience frustration try getting your business verified on Facebook if Facebook haven’t already decided that your business needs to be verified.

Or indeed doing almost anything relating to FB Business. It's a nightmare to use in my experience, and the help articles are always out of date, mentioning features that no longer exist.

Is your username a reference to The Day Today? If so I love it.

Next total eclipse in the UK is 2090, unfortunately.

In Aug 2026 there's a 90% one though. And if you travel to the right part of Spain for that one it's another Total.

They removed the Quick Launch toolbar in Win11 - main reason I didn't even consider moving.

I have just recently discovered a way to bring it back, but it's not exactly optimal.

I agree. It's clever, given the theme of escapism - at a glance it's a pic of someone using a monitor, but the more you look, the more things are weird or uncanny. And yet she is so engrossed, she doesn't know (or care).

Took me a while to spot that the outside is rotated 90 degrees!

A piece of granite placed on the turntable would change how his records sound, but not necessarily in a good way.

Depending on the artist of course.

You know, I considered that pun, but decided it was too obvious - I shouldn't have taken it for granite.

Isn't the problem here just that whoever is speaking in OP's title has failed to say Road, Drive, Avenue, etc? As long as they do that there shouldn't be any problem with the streets having similar first parts of their names.

sanguinepar ,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

I guess - although in this day and age with Google/Apple maps, it seems like it shouldn't be an issue really, as long as the recipient has said the full street name in the first place.

Maybe it's just a geographic thing, but it's pretty common round my way to have this sort of thing. For example I live in ********* Terrace, but there's also ********* Avenue, ********* Drive and ********* Grove, and the overall neighbourhood is known as *********.

And then nearby there's the ######## neighbourhood with ######## Drive, ######## Road, ######## Terrace, ######## Loan, #######, ######## Crescent, ######## Place, ######## Park and ######## Avenue! :-)

Ah ok. I thought it was a reference to "sky high" or something like that.
