I pretty much instantly lose respect for people who design sites to only support specific browsers. With the exception of Firefox, it's all Chromium anyway so they don't really need to worry about it. This isn't like when Internet Explorer was a thing and broke web pages.

stoly ,

We got it for funsies and went through the final Spanish test. We're both fluent speakers, he's native. We were unable to pass the final tests--not because we didn't speak Spanish, but because it was actually a subjective interpretation of what was being said rather than an objective one, btu they treated it like it were objective. Basically you have to learn it THEIR way. As a linguist, this is a big no-no and I walked away.

stoly ,

I used to work for a web hosting company and have seen so many horror cases that I agree with you that this is what is happening. I also think it's kinda lazy to just say that they won't support what people are using because it's hard. Even 5 - 7 years ago, this was much harder than it is now.

stoly ,

Did you miss January 6?

stoly ,

Low effort troll attempt failure.

stoly ,

So, just run in guns blazing? It’s unclear what you think they could have investigated by this point.

stoly ,

And his empire is days to weeks from a decision that will destroy it. He lost a huge defamation case because nobody competent will represent him. He’s under multiple criminal proceedings.

This is all happening right in front of your eyes yet you deny it.

stoly ,

i apologize, I misread your comment. Thought you were saying you’d have been in the streets.

stoly ,

This is what happens when entitled business bros take over. The sort of person who is uninterested in tech but is interested in quarterly bonuses will be inept and glassy eyed.

stoly ,

This makes me so sad, I really enjoyed the comic for years and years. Then he had to go and open his fucking mouth and ruin the entire thing. Now I feel a twinge of disgust rather than delight when I see a reference of him.

stoly ,

LOL I bet he believes that.

stoly ,

It became this in approximately 2009 - 2010, around when the founders left and the business bros took over. We've been seeing the slow decline since then, though it may be accelerating now.

stoly ,

Notable: Google Home can no longer set timers and does not understand what "stop playing" means. It's basically only usable for asking for music to be played since it has declined so heavily.

stoly ,

Yep. Not just "I took an Ambian", this was full on loon.

stoly ,

When I ask it to set a timer, it tells me that it doesn't understand me. If I ask it to stop playing, it tells me that it doesn't understand me. I have to just say "stop". It also used to transfer whatever you were listening to between speakers, but cannot understand me anymore if I ask for that.

stoly ,

Yep. Gmail is the final piece for me. Everything else has been migrated at this point.

I will keep YouTube sadly. Sad because it’s Google.

stoly ,

Certainly only certain people have email addresses that can even send to his inbox. Everyone else would be blocked.

stoly ,

More than anything, it's that people resist change. They'll stick to what they are doing until sometime after it becomes very clear that they shouldn't any longer.

stoly ,

You're back there now! Lemmy now is pretty much like Reddit pre-2008.

Why on earth would someone think that this douchenozzle is capable of empathy for humans? He literally stole facebook because he felt entitled to it and had no problems letting governments use it to coordinate genocides THAT HE WAS AWARE OF. No, if there is a hell, this person will be at the top levels of tortured souls and he fully deserves to suffer.

stoly ,

So what you're saying is that victims of bullying are the real problem, not the people being bullies.

stoly ,

Someone else posted a link to one instance, but I believe there have been 3 or 4 of them.

stoly ,

LOL people are teaching ChatGPT their passwords? Why?

stoly ,

Because people who come to Lemmy tend to be more technical and better on questions of security than the average population. For most people around here, much of this is obvious and we're all tired of hearing this story over and over while the public learns nothing.

stoly ,

I had a student graduate recently who told me that he thought that technology just worked before joining my team of computer lab managers. I suspect that people think that tech in general JUST GOES.

stoly ,

lol insert George Carlin reference about average people here

stoly ,

Well I'd never use the term to describe a person--it's unnecessarily loaded. Ignorant, naive, etc might be better.

stoly ,

My father has retired multiple times. Then he keeps going out and finding new jobs like in real estate and making more money. My parents were very stingy with sharing, they spent all their money on random shit and properties that they'd then take a loss on. It's really sad.

stoly ,

LOL their biggest expense is their data storage and transfer, surely. This is a company that MUST be raking it in since so many high-profile clients use them. This issue is really about greed.

stoly ,

It is sales software. You can put in an account for some business plus all the contact people you'd ever need. Then you can track all of the emails and such that go through. Think of it like a ticketing system, which some people have forced it to do, that focuses specifically on the needs of company sales.

stoly ,

Agreed, it's terrible.

stoly ,

Cough sn cough

stoly ,

It might be better than when I used it like 8 years ago. It was definitely not fit for ticketing at the time but coo be made to work.

stoly ,

I've been using Firefox as my "home" browser and Opera GX as my "work" browser. On Windows, it's easy to set up launch profiles but not so much on Mac. I need to figure out a solution to this before I can transition.

stoly ,

Isn’t it just more chromium though?

stoly ,

I need to figure out an easy way to launch different browser profiles on a Mac without having to go to about:profile.

stoly ,

Radical dude.

stoly ,

Late Gen X to early Millennial was the sweet spot between needing to know how a computer works and having a computer that just works. People before and after don’t have that experience.

stoly ,

It is the case. The generation that grew up with an iPad never had to learn to use a file system.

stoly ,

LOL did he seriously find a lawyer who would take that one on? Amazing. Also what entitlement.

stoly ,

ESH

Apple sucks for hiring in Mossimo’s engineering team and reinventing the wheel. Mossimo sucks for being a patent troll.

stoly ,

I spelled it wrong via mobile--it's Masimo. Mossimo is a clothing brand.

stoly ,

I've seen others make this argument in other threads. It really does tell me that people view this in a very different way. It does seem to me that you find the chance encounters and social aspect of the job to be beneficial. A lot of people, myself included, find those to be exhausting, in the way, and detrimental to mental health. At home, all that overhead disappears and I can just do my work.

stoly ,

This isn’t 1980. Cities are really not polluted. Those who live in the suburbs tend to be less healthy due to lack of activity and increased exposure to the pollution emitted from cars.

stoly ,

We’re going to take the exception and apply it to the whole, gotcha.

stoly ,

I love when people invent something then complain about how dangerous it is. It really hits you in the feels.

stoly ,

The difference is the type of the job. Do we want to make jobs available for the general population and requiring minimal training, or do we want to make jobs available only for those with very difficult-to-get engineering degrees?
