Seriously they deserve what they get for not appreciating what they had.

stoly ,

That’s a cop out. There are plenty of terrible people in that state.

stoly ,

Gosh I wish that Denver were a bigger city. Colorado really is a lovely place.

stoly ,

San Francisco, Chicago, NYC. Those are cities. Denver is a very large town.

stoly ,

There really isn’t much in the way of detection. It’s a big problem in schools and universities and the plagiarism detectors can’t sense AI.

stoly ,

Edit and save then delete.

stoly ,

High ideals but no means. They become hoarders and run out of money. Also it’s an org that long ago stopped being healthy.

stoly ,

I’m saying that they don’t bring in enough money to truly be a no kill org. Essentially they are saying one thing and not doing it themselves.

As far as the org, it’s my belief that it started out with people who genuinely cared for animal welfare and wanted to do something about it. Over time the psychos edged out the good folk and now we get idiots breaking into university primate labs and releasing monkeys on the street.

stoly ,

Frankly I’ve not paid attention over recent years so we may both be wrong here.

stoly ,

lol ever been to Houston?

stoly ,

No CA really is comfortable outside of some low deserts and high mountainous areas. Stuff stays pretty much in the middle year round.

stoly ,

I have multiple times and i strongly believe that it’s the ugliest city I’ve ever seen.

stoly ,

TX and CA do get plenty of rain. In fact, TX gets hit with hurricanes all the time.

It's worse: they are not doing sufficient testing. This is why the larger manufacturers are passing Tesla by - they already have the standards and procedures in place.

stoly ,

There are people who are pathologically contrarian. I’ve had to end a friendship over it—the endless need to say something negative about literally everything that ever happens and an unwillingness to be charitable to others.

stoly ,

Only on closed courses. The best AI lacks the basic heuristics of a child and you simply can’t account for all possible outcomes.

stoly ,

You’re deciding to prioritize economic development over human safety.

stoly ,

Here I was just thinking to myself that I can't imagine why it has taken so long. It's not like this is a new problem in any way.

ETA: It just occurred to me that nobody cared until Taylor Swift was involved.

stoly ,

Edited to add

stoly ,

Reminder that USC is a private university and is most certainly beholden to donors.

Fairbuds are Fairphone’s proof that we really could make better tiny gadgets (arstechnica.com)

But of course we all know that the big manufacturers don't do this not because they can't but because they don't want to. Planned obsolescence is still very much the name of the game, despite all the bullshit they spout about sustainability.

stoly ,

I’m also confused here. I’d have thought that any format decoding would happen on the phone.

stoly ,

I’m with you. The hate has always seemed a bit like a first world problem.

stoly ,

Nice lesson, thanks.

stoly ,

First several generations of hard drives really were awful and broke if you stared at them at them wrong. Floppies were more reliable, cheaper, and easy to get.

stoly ,

HDDs before, say, 1986, were junk. Those that came after will still very expensive until the late 90s, when prices started to drop.

stoly ,

I agree with it being nice to be able to hear how they were doing. But it’s nice now to manage a thousand computers.

stoly ,

I dunno, isn't the homeowner an idiot for putting a smart washer on WiFi in the first place? We don't need smart devices, they aren't making our lives better.

stoly ,

This site is a complete right-wing boomerbait rag, never pay it any attention.

People think of WA and think of Seattle, then extrapolate. Seattle is really no different than places like Omaha where there is a more liberal, educated populace. They are surrounded by a state full of angry, ignorant people. This "newspaper" is for the angry types.

stoly ,

You didn’t pre heat the oven, exposing the glove to the oven’s full power. It needed to already be hot before the glove went in.

stoly ,

I'm afraid that every generation runs into this and learns the hard way. Discord isn't the first and won't be the last. The moment someone wants to become profitable, all bets are off.

stoly ,

And team speak too…

stoly ,

Hello twin!

stoly ,

Apparently the team making the first scanner needed a good test photo and that was the best they had on hand at that moment in terms of color variation and intensity.

stoly ,

Yeah pickle rick was too much for me

stoly ,

That’s what places like Lemmy are for though.

stoly ,

I'm not sure why you think that news orgs aren't also biased. Everything and everyone is biased, even those that genuinely try to not let it show through and be fully impartial.

stoly ,

And at the news organization, you are influenced by the editors and framing by authors.

stoly ,

This article is garbage. The only thing that Steve Jobs did was have ideas and enough narcissism to force them on other people. Engineers and designers far smarter than he did the actual work.

stoly ,

I work in tech and specialize in Apple hardware. I get really sick of industry folks talking about Jobs as being inspiring and other nonsense. No, he was an asshole and we should not celebrate him.

stoly ,

I guess he died more or less pre-Twitter, so that's something. He'd have a different legacy otherwise.

stoly ,

The cracks in this case are really that governments will no longer support the model that Apple created.

stoly ,

Entitlement. He got better because he comes from a well to do family and all the privileges that brings. He believes he deserves it, plain and simple.

stoly ,

I think he still has millions of worshippers out there.

stoly ,

They are essentially selling that percentage of the company to the public at large. Not enough for any shareholder to have any power over it, but enough for the company to get some spending money.

stoly ,

Any stimulus loses its impact with repeated exposure.

stoly ,

Lol I seem to remember that I once had /home mapped to a partition that did that for all sorts of fun and games for a while.

stoly ,

If I hadn't already left, this would probably have been the thing that did it for me.
