I don't know, forums were much smaller back in the day. You could find a good community, because it was possible to organize one. But I don't think that's possible at today's scale.

summerof69 ,

I don't think that GIMP should be the same, but it does have issues with usability. And when you search "how to do X in gimp", you'll probably find a 10 steps guide, while in PS that'd be a couple of clicks. There's no DDS plugin that supports all compression methods at all. There are so many things that won't go away no matter how many seconds or minutes or years you'll put into learning GIMP.

summerof69 ,

Don't you have to host Mumble somewhere? With Discord anyone can create a server and invite friends for free with no technical knowledge required. That's a huge plus. I also remember RadCall was a thing for a while, at least where I am from.

summerof69 ,

I don't think that people are trying to find an eternal solution. Nothing lasts forever. When Discord turns to shit, something else will take its place. There is no need to worry about that when it offers too many advantages today.

summerof69 ,

It gets good reviews because it's fun to play. The game is good at its core: you have to scan machines, aim at weak spots, move a lot in the battle to avoid damage, choose right weapons, or you can override them and enjoy the show, there are so many options and challenges. Besides, let's not underestimate the value of good graphics. They make the world nicer, more enjoyable, make you want to come back and play again. I understand that this game is not for everyone though.

summerof69 ,

I wouldn't say that Horizon aims to be super realistic. I mean, it's not far away, especially if we compare it to Elden Ring. But in Horizon colors are saturated, the game looks too beautiful and vibrant to be realistic in my books. I would say Hogwarts Legacy is a better example of a too realistic game: colors are bleak, objects and textures are much closer to what we can find in real life, it does look generic as you say (at least IMO).

summerof69 ,

Ah, yes, another user offended by a joke posted to a community with memes.

summerof69 ,

This will continue until you're part of the intended audience.

spoiler

Okay, it won't stop even then.

Web Development With Assembly

O'NO

summerof69 ,

But with love.

summerof69 ,

I simply envy you because you live in some world where this is the problem worth discussing and getting angry. Or your head is full of shit. It's probably the latter, given that you put people joking about Arch Linux to the same category as racists and misogynists. In this case, I don't envy, but pity you.

This reply perfectly highlights why people who have issues with basic logic support communism.

summerof69 ,

My Raspberry Pi is named 'raspberrypi'. I'm very creative.

summerof69 ,

I can't believe this is still not possible to do. I could create an endless amount of panels and move them anywhere I want in Linux 20 years ago, but a corporation with a three trillion dollars market cap can't do that in 2024??

summerof69 ,

pacman -S nvidia and I've never had any issues. I know that it's not that easy in some other distros, but maybe stop using shitty distros.

summerof69 ,

What kind of surveillance? I remember 6 years ago an admin of a paid org on Slack could download all conversations, including private.

summerof69 ,

If we're comparing services run by enthusiasts to a service run by a commercial company, then I'd like to add my five cents: at least lemm.ee is much more stable than reddit.com.

summerof69 ,

I get the sense that a lot of people here don’t use MacOS.

I wish that was true.

summerof69 ,

Ultimately, most people stay with the default option, that's why they have to be aggressive. Look at the amount of screenshots even in advanced PC communities with ugly useless search bar enabled, which is taking 1/3 of the taskbar. I'm not even speaking about casual users who have no idea that it can be disabled.

summerof69 ,

No, because most people stick with the default option regardless.

summerof69 ,

I mean, you and I known MS could simply ask…

No.

https://sparq.stanford.edu/solutions/opt-out-policies-increase-organ-donation
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3458339/

That's the best known case, but it's not limited to organ donation of course.

they want that slide that says x many million users of Copilot…

I didn't argue with that.

summerof69 ,

I have a cat, he killed 0 birds.

summerof69 ,

Don't believe this, OP is a cat trying to get rid of a competitor.

summerof69 ,

Yeah, suggestions killed FB, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Reddit for me. You can't even have your own feed anymore.

summerof69 ,

It's not dumb because it works, doesn't it? Even haters spread the news.

summerof69 ,

Investors, who made Discord possible, want to earn money. It's totally understandable.

summerof69 ,

The hate for successful people here is ridiculous. Neither Discord nor its investors owe you a world-class service with private servers, video calls, screen sharing, voice calls, and many other features for free. The market operates on mutual benefit: you get the service, and the owners get the money. Those who complain about businesses aiming to be profitable are lunatics.

summerof69 ,

Canonical has nothing to do with Arch Linux, so I don't see what's the issue.

summerof69 ,

Lmao this is the first time I'm seeing this format, I like the content so far.

summerof69 ,

It does, because many more eyes can find issues, as illustrated by this story.

This story illustrates that some eyes can find some issues. For proper discussion we need proper data and ratios, only then we could compare. How many issues there are in open and closed source software? How many of them are getting fixed? Unfortunately, we don't have this data.

summerof69 ,

People in the US should not wait until conditions deteriorate to levels seen elsewhere before voicing concerns. I wouldn't call what they have privileges, as people had to fight for them in the past. The privileges you're talking about are not something that fell from the sky. Moreover, there's no guarantee these privileges will remain without continual effort to preserve them.

summerof69 , (edited )

Some people need to get off internet more often, read less news, if they can't laugh at a primitive joke because they see too much context.

summerof69 ,

No, I can't, because echo chambers in social media where the most extreme people are gathered don't represent the world.

summerof69 ,

Probably bosses are trying to convince AI that AI is ready.

summerof69 ,

Yeah, people should use proper software to deal with their mental problems. Arch Linux, for instance, comes with a bare minimum, offering the user repositories with fresh packages and AUR to build anything they like.

Finally deleted my LinkedIn account!

After putting my account into "hibernation" for the past few weeks, I finally closed it. But I'm still looking for work. Thankfully I can still find positions (SRE and software dev) by just going directly to the company's site and finding a Jobs page.

Good luck to everyone else out there looking for work!

summerof69 ,

I got a couple of jobs thanks to LinkedIn, I don't know what problem people have with it. Yeah, the content is questionable, but nobody asks you to spend time scrolling the feed.
