My future plans include setting up a NAS storage and connecting that to a Pi which would be always on. The Pi would be a torrent seeder, and a Plex/Jellyfin server as well.

This way my trusty desktop computer can rest after being on 24/7 for like 4 years now. Poor thing.

I haven't tried this yet, so I can't report on how well it works. But maybe it can serve as inspiration for you.

victorz ,

If the projector supports apps, maybe it can run Plex/Jellyfin? Otherwise maybe I would have another small Pi or a small laptop or something that would use the projector as its output. I'm assuming the projector doesn't support HDR so a regular browser connecting to Plex could work.

I just use my HDR-enabled smart TV to connect to Plex and Jellyfin. 🤷‍♂️

victorz ,

It scares me, honestly. The level of security for this to be viable is insane. Imagine some flaw or accident or attack that would erase me as a citizen. Scary thought.

victorz ,

It's just that I don't want my own country to get any wild ideas. I mean, the ideal digital society utopia is an amazing thought experiment. But it feels very fragile for us at this time. We are still in our technological infancy as a species, even if we feel very advanced.

victorz ,

I would really recommend getting a functional understanding of how public-private key cryptography works.

I have an intermediate understanding of how it works. 👍

and u don't lose ur id and contracts

Ah, yeah... Therein might lie an issue. 😅

victorz ,

I guess it is, but I'm assuming the government has a better system of keeping track of my papers than I would have of keeping track of my digital keys/identities. What if there's a fire and I lose my key pair without a backup? I'm screwed.

victorz ,

The government would have a copy of my public and private key?

Hmm, alright, I guess. It goes against my gut regarding key pairs but in this instance I guess it would be necessary. 😅

victorz ,

I'm from Sweden. Also a developer by trade. 🤷‍♂️

victorz ,

Forgetting about pregnancy and childbirth perhaps? I take it that they meant those things fuck up women's bodies pretty severely sometimes. It's a tough struggle to recover from pregnancy and childbirth, and some never do.

But apart from that, birth control should be an equal burden, IMO.

victorz , (edited )

Pullout game strong af. Using it for years.

Having said that, I don't recommend it.

Edit: the down votes 😆 I said I don't recommend it! At least I'm responsible towards others!

I have two kids already, we take good care of them. Having another one would just mean more love. Don't worry guys. 😊❤️

victorz ,

Oh my dear child ❤️

victorz ,

I take offense to you calling me an idiot. That's not fair. I have extremely good ejaculation control. But I still obviously don't recommend this to anyone else. It's a shitty method if you leak a little bit during sexual activity, too, which I never do.

Do note that we often time sex to low fertility sectors in the menstrual cycle.

Again. Do not use this method. (But no need to hate on someone it does work well for, wtf.)

victorz ,

Yeah, that's me. I have extremely good ejaculation control and know myself very well at the end of sex. Like, I've been using it for like 20 years. And the two times I actually wanted to make children we became pregnant immediately, so we are both very fertile. So I know it's working well.

But as you say, you have to be experienced to trust it. It was more scary in the beginning.

victorz ,

It's good that you also weigh the risk against your ability to raise another one. That's the true responsibility right there. Unprotected sex I feel is only ever irresponsible if you run a risk of infecting someone or making a baby that you don't want to or can't raise properly.

I wish you and your wife the best in your lives together. ❤️

Linus Tech Tips (LTT) release investigation results on former accusations (x.com)

There were a series of accusations about our company last August from a former employee. Immediately following these accusations, LMG hired Roper Greyell - a large Vancouver-based law firm specializing in labor and employment law, to conduct a third-party investigation. Their website describes them as “one of the largest...

victorz ,

Just because we're still astonished by people's stupidity doesn't mean we're not veterans of it. People/humanity still disappoint(s) me, even though I've watched them/it fail each other/itself for decades now.

Do you leave a tip for housekeeping if you're only staying one night in a hotel?

Is it a 'thank you for prepping my room' or 'please clean my room today'? If you tip post cleaning, it's likely going to someone else the next day. Many hotels now only do housekeeping on demand. How do employees feel about this - do they miss the tips or are they happy for a less stressful workday?...

victorz ,

No, not in Europe. People get paid for their work here.

victorz ,

Just wondering, who/what the F is Heathcliff and why the obsession with him/it? The "comics" that keep being posted with them removed make no sense to me. What am I missing? Thanks in advance!

victorz ,

If you look at the edited version and then the original and they both make the same level of sense then the edit was successful in showing that Heathcliff's presence was irrelevant in the comic even though his name is on it.

Ah! I see! Okay cool, I'll look at it in a different light from now on. Thank you!

As for if it's funny or not that gets into your level of appreciation for anti-jokes, surrealist, dadaist and absurdist humor. It's not for everyone.

Haha okay good, I'll feel less bad for not "getting it" now. 😅

Take care!

Dell responds to return-to-office resistance with VPN, badge tracking, and color-coding of employees (arstechnica.com)

After reversing its position on remote work, Dell is reportedly implementing new tracking techniques on May 13 to ensure its workers are following the company's return-to-office (RTO) policy, The Register reported today, citing anonymous sources....

victorz ,

Are their egos fragile because they know the people who do the real work are... not them?

victorz ,

Yeah it's probably more complicated than a single factor/parameter, eh. Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences!

victorz ,

Pineapple is good on lots of food, including pizza. Another good pizza is banana, chicken, and curry. Very tasty, very juicy.

victorz ,

Jajamensan! You got it right. 🇸🇪🍍❤️🍕🍗

victorz ,

What did the original pizza look like then? Just bread and cheese? Or just bread? How far back are we counting? Originally pizza was just random wheat straws in a field?

I'm being a little facetious. 😇

victorz ,

Sounds delicious! Obviously not the pizza we're all used to but I'd love to try. Interesting history as well.

victorz ,

I mean... Probably a bad choice of words. I just mean it isn't dry. 😬👍

victorz ,

Rawrrr.

victorz ,

Brhwtf

victorz ,

Megatransfers? Or what does the T stand for? And how does a "transfer" (if so) translate to bytes?

victorz , (edited )

Thank you for going into detail.

Okay so, 1 T = 8 B. DD => 2 T/channel. And with 2 channels we get 4 T, so 4 × 8 = 32. Okay I get you. Thanks so much. 🙂

Yeah that's a crazy number with 300-500 GBps if DDR5 is doing around 200... Absolutely insane actually. But yeah, good theory about the GPU. Those bastards, padding the numbers.

victorz ,

Good points. I retract my name-calling!

victorz ,

I'm not, but I am envious. Happy for OP though.

victorz ,

Like to tinker? DIY your server.

Yeah I love doing it myself my server.

victorz ,

Nobody can stop you from spending your money as you see fit, 24/7/365, from anywhere, to anywhere, instantly, and for free.

N—... Nobody is doing that now, with regular money, either. Why would anyone want to stop me from spending my money? Apart from maybe my wife...

victorz ,

Well that's scary. Luckily I live nowhere near that part of the world.

But even if I have a server, I'll have to have my own separate Internet if I really want to be able to pay unrestrictedly. Otherwise the government would just shut down my internet connection, right?

victorz ,

What I mean by separate Internet is a connection to other computers so I can make payments, where said connection isn't able to be controlled by the government.

victorz ,

"Not garbage" seems like a low bar to overcome for a company with such long experience. 😅

victorz ,

What makes it garbage code? I mean, I don't like Windows due to the user experience, but I have zero insight into the code itself because it's proprietary closed-source and I've never worked at Microsoft.

victorz ,

All software is buggy 😅

But yeah, keeping backwards compatibility does tend to open a lot of bug surfaces, like you say. Though IMO that's due to the decision to do so, rather than the code itself. I'm sure they do their best with the corporate decisions to which they have to adhere. But you probably didn't mean they are bad coders, merely that the end product becomes buggy, I suppose. 😊

victorz ,

I'm hoping they'll hit nobody on the road, with somebody on board.

victorz ,

Quiet Quitter seems like such an American concept. I feel like America's work ethic resembles Asian work ethic a lot? Nobody would complain here about someone who is fulfilling their duties without being more enthusiastic about it than necessary, or about not giving it more than they absolutely need to. It's a job, after all.

Obviously, in some professions you want the worker to be somewhat involved, like a caretaker or doctor or surgeon or teacher. But if they just do what is asked of them, they shouldn't be called "quitters"... Just my two cents, I guess.

victorz ,

In a major development, according to reports emerging online

and

According to reports from sources that produce news on such matters

These just scream AI-written to me. Especially the second one. Nobody talks or writes like that. If you don't have sources to mention, you don't mention sources.

victorz ,

I didn't even know it existed. I had to search to find the setting, but I see it exists on my phone and it's disabled. I don't recall disabling it though.

It's not a flex... 🙄 I was just confused about how it seemed so established that this was an "Android" feature, so should be activated on my phone too, but it isn't. And now that I see I have the functionality disabled but people say it's the default, I'm even more confused because I don't remember even seeing this setting. 🤷‍♂️

victorz ,

Thank you for defending me. ❤️ They were correct though. Apparently I had the setting disabled, but I don't remember doing so. Must have been years ago on another phone? And then carried over when settings migrated? I don't know when this feature was introduced. But yeah. It's a thing.

But obviously not universal if you don't have it. Which Android version are you on?

victorz ,

Ah, that's probably why, eh? Android 10 is quite old, right?

victorz ,

Yeah 60% is far from every device lol. But it's still a good warning I guess. 😅
