1 - screen protector
2 - do people not lock their phones before putting them in their pockets?

warm ,

They are buying studios and their IP so no one else can use it, even if they don't use it themselves. It's a strategy to remove competition, they don't care about the industry and the players, they care about money. All these big companies are the same, Microsoft just have the wallet to act on it, avoid them all and buy indie games.

warm ,

they could care less

So they do care then!

warm ,

Apple copy Samsung too, Apple just has good marketing and gives random names to standard tech to make it sound like its something amazing you should care about.

Samsung wanted to sell wireless buds too, so they also removed the 3.5mm port. At least their SD card slot stuck around for a bit longer. They could release a true flagship if they wanted with a 3.5mm port and an SD card slot, but why would they when millions of people buy their phones each year anyway?

Both a shitty, but at least Samsung is Android and not a locked down platform.

warm ,

That was a good change. I'd argue even removing the cable would be a good change. Less e-waste (even though releasing phones every year is e-waste enough).
The bad thing was Apple then selling a charger at extortionate prices, you didnt have to buy theirs though.

warm ,

When autonomous cars are good enough to just drive people around then yeah the companies should be liable, but right now they're not and drivers should be fully alert as if they are driving a regular vehicle.

warm ,

Replies aren't always in disagreement! I agree with what you are saying, just adding on my thoughts on information further up the thread too.

warm , (edited )

It's still in its infacy, eventually it will replace humans entirely and the roads will be much safer. Right now it's just like improved cruise control and kind of pointless.
Some manufacturers have already said they will claim full responsibility for their cars in self-driving mode, which makes sense to do.

warm , (edited )

You choose to activate that mode, while I understand your sentiment and do agree, it's not as cut and dry as 'company liable' or 'driver liable', both can be at fault. Taking blame off drivers entirely could make people even less attentive and the safety of lives is more important than some fines to a car manufacturer.
The real problem is that mode being allowed to exist at all. It's clearly not ready for use on public roads and companies are just abusing advertising to try and pin their 'autopilot' as something it isn't.

Also note: Some manufacturers (Volvo & Mercedes, that I know of) have already said they will claim full responsibility for their cars in self-driving mode.

warm ,

This might be one of the worst designed maps I have ever seen...

warm ,

This is one of those shitty products that you can see being shitty from a mile away, yet all the coverage and discussion around it gives it a life it otherwise wouldn't have had.

warm ,

There just isnt though. Spotify had the best UX of any music streaming service for the longest time and only recently have they started shooting themselves in the foot.
Lossless is pointless and not a selling point compared to interface and usability across hardware. Tidal is probably it's closest competitor, but it still doesnt have the integration Spotify does.

warm ,

Yes, I made this point in my comment, the last few years Spotify has been going through the same UX disaster the rest of the web is, changing things for the sake of it.

warm ,

Even in blind tests with high end gear, people often mistake 320kbps MP3s as the lossless track. Compression is incredible these days and isn't inherently a bad thing like it used to be, it saves a lot of space and bandwidth with minimal to no perceivable difference in quality.

And as you point out, not even worth considering with average equipment.

warm ,

Or if there is a noticeable difference, you have to really listen for it. Which if you wanna do that, then fine, but the vast majority of the time usually have music on while they are doing something else and don't sit listening for every subtle difference, if one exists.

warm ,

Linux users do this and then wonder why no one wants to switch to linux.

warm ,

Come back EVGA, please.

warm ,

Can just Onboard Memory Manager too for Logitech mice, don't even need that G hub garbage.

warm ,

People are trained to buy any old trash that is marketed to them without any critical thinking, it's why everything is turning out broken like this.

Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone (www.theverge.com)

Microsoft is starting to enable ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for all users. After testing these briefly with Windows Insiders earlier this month, Microsoft has started to distribute update KB5036980 to Windows 11 users this week, which includes “recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu....

warm ,

Tried the same thing, but ended up running into issues with Linux constantly and needed to use Windows more than I wanted, so just ended up back on Windows 10. Once all the shit is disabled it's perfectly fine. Linux is getting there, but still only really good for general web browsing/office suites (unless you wanna play around in the command line for ages).

warm ,

Ah yeah, it's hard to find good support for Linux. Lot's of people with their heads in their asses, who will say "why are you bothering going through Windows settings to disable tracking when you can just use Linux!", then proceed to tell you to enter a million different commands in the terminal to try and get basic functionality you had on Windows.

The sooner they start being more welcoming to new users, the sooner the market share will grow.

warm ,

Discord users are being tracked by Discord anyway.

warm ,

Always the case with public information, everything is scraped. Anyone can join a public discord server, so anyone can see every message posted there. The real crime is the lack of encryption in private messages.

warm ,

Forums need to come back, I die a little inside whenever I see a Discord server linked for support. Ugh.

warm ,

Yeah, they are just slapping a bot in public servers and scraping all public facing data such as profile data and chat messages. Still, no reason for PMs to be plain-text in general, but hey, that's Discord!

warm ,

Yeah, but that's an unfortunate side effect of a public internet, they tell you to be careful online for a reason. You should have no expectation of privacy when using Discord.

warm ,

In my experience, every item from the same warehouse comes packaged together. Are you sure the items are sourced from the same warehouse, because they aren't going to unpack them and pack them together again when they reach the final distribution location. Perhaps it becomes super inefficient to pack items together in super large warehouses, where the items are sourced far apart from each other?

warm ,

I was happy with an ad at the side of the video. Then they started popping up over my video, then they started appearing before my video, then they started appearing throughout my video. Companies shot themselves in the foot with online advertising, banner ads and such weren't much of a problem, but once ads start disrupting the content we visit a site for, then we look to block them ads. More people blocking ads is less revenue, so they make the ads more aggressive... and the cycle continues.

And on a side note, Linus can fuck off.

warm ,

Sounds great in theory, but won't happen. The internet is too consolidated now for the majority of people to give a shit, there's people buying YouTube Premium because of all this. Look at reddit, barely a dent in it after all the fiascos, twitter is holding on too. People don't care.

warm ,

These days maybe, but disruptive ads started way before subscriptions became a thing.

warm ,

47 does provide a peak in the plots though? All the numbers ending in 7 do.

warm ,

There's a lot of DRM-free games on Steam. It's up to developers to use their DRM, it's not a requirement by Valve.

warm ,

Yeah, the lack of offline installers sucks, but it still updates the game and you can copy them files away whenever you want.

warm ,

Maybe to 12, a lot of people stuck with 7 until 10, because 8 sucked. A lot of people stuck with XP because Vista sucked. A lot of people are sticking with 10 because 11 sucks. In history, Microsoft has had a usable OS every other.

If 12 is shit, perhaps Linux will finally get its day.

warm ,

Haven't kept up with it, but that certainly wasn't the case on release and I still don't think it's as functional as 10. I have only used it on a family laptop and had trouble simply connecting a printer, it drives you even further away from useful settings than 10 does.

Theme is subjective of course, but I much prefer 10 myself.

warm ,

Also the case of how its been in Windows for decades, if it was truly better they would havr changed it ages ago, but it isnt better, its just UI designers justifying their paychecks.

warm , (edited )

You can't compare adding extra clicks to do a function that has been available in an OS for decades to a company releasing an entire new product with a new OS.

We don't want things tucked away, my very non-techy savvy parents call me all the time for help and it's no wonder because UI just gets less and less intuitive every year, with more things buried into context menus.

It's literally changing things for the sake of it, to make things subjectively "pretty", adding as much padding as possible and shiny effects.

warm ,

That's not the point is it. Obviously I can hack the shit out it and install stuff to get it close to how I want, but the point is that is what its like default. That's like saying I can't complain about web UX because I can just edit the HTML/CSS!

warm ,

Adobe is a cancer the second it is installed. Avoid this shitty company if possible, there's loads of fantastic and better alternatives to their products these days.

warm ,

Not really my kind of thing, so I don't. While adobe is a pile of shit, they do admittedly have some good software under all the extra shit piled on top and their suite is a lot larger than I remember these days!
