no shit, I feel most people can function in just about any framework, so long as everyone knows what they are building. I've seen agile (and other frameworks to be fair) as the 'solution' to missing requirements too often. Sure we can get to work without them, but to what end?

This is not the AI I was expected after growing up with Star Trek. I’m trying to picture just what horrors the replicators would come up with if hooked to this abomination.

Then the other clowns go and steal scarjo’s voice instead of Majel Barrett. What a future we’re building here…

@4grams@awful.systems avatar

Oh, I’m totally kidding, it would be soul crushing (crusher?) to hear her voice coming from these nightmares.

I have no opinion on the Star Wars/Dune debate but that is one fantastic comment. Kudos to the author, brought me quite a smile.

Ha! This is a glorious future we’re living in…

Just like their name, it’s just a slogan. They wrap themselves in flags and bibles and folks fall for it every time.

Bought some of the old versions for backup drives. That was a mistake.

4grams ,
@4grams@awful.systems avatar

Bingo. Sorry, had typed a reply about my failure rate and difficulties getting an RMA but forgot to submit.

4grams ,
@4grams@awful.systems avatar

At the time it was fine. I had an array of 4tb drives that I was backing up with a series of 5gb drives. They were just so unreliable; all but one failed while the array they backed up is still spinning strong.

4grams ,
@4grams@awful.systems avatar

Not exactly reliable and less than easy rma process.

Sorry, had typed this and forgotten to hit submit :(

I feel like they belong in separate categories though. Lawnmower man was regular bad, like it started as something that had value but effects and writing just weren’t up to where they should have been resulting in a hilarious, guilty pleasure mess.

Battlefield earth never stood a chance, everything about it was cursed start to finish and was a complete vanity project by a religious weirdo. There’s just plain guilt with it, no pleasure.

4grams ,
@4grams@awful.systems avatar

Pretty much. At this point a religious weirdo is a religious weirdo no matter what flavor they prefer.

I have an m2 iPad pro. The last thing it needs is more processing power, what it needs is better software to make use of the power that it has. I’d love to run full OS X on it considering I paid more than some MacBooks.

I feel the same way. I feel like we used to buy things and hold onto them for a while, nowadays, everything seems to be designed to have a single year lifecycle. I like AirPods but now that their battery died and I can’t replace them, I’m looking at going back to the cord. But now of course we’re in dongle hell since there’s only one port..

    Feels like the automotive world is in utter chaos. I do believe in EVs and hybrids but manufacturers have focused on the premium segment to their own detriment. If they had started with the MVP instead of a flagship things might be in a different situation.

    Yes, I am an aware of the Tesla strategy of starting high end but they seem to have abandoned that goal in favor of prestige meme wagons.

    Looking for self hosted digital asset management

    I'm looking to be able to store assets that I've created and purchased (both 3d models and images, potentially audio in the future) on my nas and would love to be able to use something to browse them and filter or sort them based on what kind of usage license I have for them. So if I'm doing a commission I can filter out the...

    Same. Since the aquisition, I've moved all my home infrastructure off vmware to debian/docker and currently trying to get in front of our next renewal at work. I've been ready to pivot if necessary but no one seems to believe me that we need to be ready for our pending licensing converation..

    I've always thought that the ad supported internet is something people will eventually get sick of and the financial foundation would evolve over time to find models that don't rely on infinite spam. Instead efforts are focussed on forcing us to view them. At this point I'm expecting the next version of Chrome to require the Ludovico technique while browsing.

    IMHO the problem is the same one as everywhere. Companies are no longer interested in creating products, they are only interested in creating revenue streams. I've been working on my finances lately and it's incredible how many 'products' have become subscriptions over time.

    I'd love to be able to buy a day's access, or access to an article. If I want to share it, I'm willing to pay a small fee to show it to certain folks. I feel like there could be a market there but in the current financial climate it would never get any interest or backing because it wouldn't be a method to capture people into a reoccurring billing cycle.

    if I ran the world, these tech companies would get the ma bell treatment, heck the current phone companies need a round 2.

    I feel you. I've spent the last couple years building up self hosted replacements for these enshittified services as they flop. But despite all the work I've put in, I can't even get them to log off facebook to look at what I've got.

    You make an excellent point, without use it’s mostly just there for nothing.. but, specifically I build shit that they complain about. I have my personal photo site up with all my digital photos from the last 25 years catalogued and available from anywhere, I did this because they complained about not having them accessible. Hasn’t been logged into by anyone but me...

    But I don’t really blame them, I get it. The easy button is right there.

    Same here, although I'm still using it. It's doing what I got it for and some of the additions are welcome (I use live TV fairly often and some friends and I are sharing libraries) but I have been concerned. What made you switch and did you find something better?

    Yeah, I have never really used search for that same reason, I don’t have enough to lose track of anyway.

    Thanks for the reply though. I hear about jellyfin a lot and my needs are simple so I’m gonna give it a go.

    anyone have a good estimate for how long it will take for these ads to become more numerous than actual posts, at least in terms of visibility. I've got to imagine the impact is going to be spectacular since they are doing this desperate IPO as their fall from grace accelerates.

    as a dad, in the market for a station wagon, there really isn't anything as cool anymore. I still want a roadmaster (in good condition) so bad, nothing better than a huge, wood paneled boat powered by an LT1.

    Reddit: 'We Are in the Early Stages of Monetizing Our User Base' (www.404media.co)

    Reddit said in a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission that its users’ posts are “a valuable source of conversation data and knowledge” that has been and will continue to be an important mechanism for training AI and large language models. The filing also states that the company believes “we are in the early...

    This has got to be the start of another bubble popping. It just has to, right? With essentially all online services doing everything they can to wring out every last penny of value without any eye towards the future (other than ai all the things)… something’s gotta give.

    But then again, maybe it’s just my eyes being open after living in those spaces for so long. Granted I’ve been out of Facebook for years, been de-amazonning for a couple (it’s really f’ing hard) and I’ve been trying to de-google as well but it’s even harder (stuck with Apple though). But, now that I’m in the fediverse, where we’re talking about all this, maybe that’s why I’m noticing?

    Nah, brace yourselves.

    Only shadenfreud I have is that my deleted banter that they will assuredly include, will hopefully increase the stupidity of whatever model gets trained on it. Ugh, what a dystopia we’re building.

    so much better. Instead of a human seeing it, your personal info is now a part of the amazon machine. IMHO it’s even more terrifying to know it’s automated than it would be if some kid unboxed it off the assembly line and personally typed your shit in off a piece of paper.

    God I’m old.

    4grams ,

    I had an identity theft a few years back, still cleaning up from it. At the time I had the typical set of standard passwords that I would use. I thought they were ok since they were pretty random but I had one for Financial, one for Web Services, etc. so of course when the creds leaked, I suddenly had a bunch of credit card bills I never signed up for..

    Since then, every password is unique, my default is 31 characters, and 2-factor for everything possible. Unfortunately I initially settled on LastPass, figured that they had hopefully learned their lesson from their breach years ago. Then it happened again recently and I moved to Bitwarden so that I can eventually migrate to a self-hosted solution.

    I've been trying to get my family on board for years but it's still too complex. Non-technical folk still will take the path of least resistance, even when the dangers are right in front of their face. We need something better.

    “Minimizes diminished App Store revenue”

    I am an Apple user and in the end I’m more comfortable with them having access to my data than google.. but man, they don’t even bother to pretend it’s a pro-consumer issue thing anymore.

    Been noticing that a lot lately, corporate weasel language is dying as these companies grow more and more emboldened.

    I do, and I miss it. What’s more I’ve never once seen a Mr beast video.

    Avoid the cruft, roll your own content and find smaller, individual communities like these tubes used to be a decade (or more) ago.

    I’m m sure the “millions lost” is their theoretical earnings they are “losing” by not being able to monetize the data they collect, spy on users to determine their habits so that they can introduce features that charge for things that are standard today, loss of ad revenue, etc.

    We’ve hit a point where since everything collects as much data as they can to be mined, anything that interrupts that stream is now a felony corruption of business model.

    Yep, arrived during the initial digg exodus, had tens of thousands of posts at Reddit, modded two subreddits. Closed my account the day during the protests and haven’t been back.

    I’m not as active here, mostly due to a busier life but found a new home anyway.
