Nah, their right... For people that can see the matrix (If you pardon the analogy) its fine and preferable to a desktop. However, to most people if it can be done from the desktop or menus it may as well not exist. If you try and explain it their eyes glaze over, they dont eant to learn something new, they just want to stare at the ass of the woman in the red dress...

Im expirenced enough to live in a terminal because I host servers locally and Im a fairly recent convertee to full-time Linux desktop for gaming. Ive been shouting from the roof tops that its good enough now, to the people in my immediate meat space it falls of deaf ears, the privacy trainwreck that is windows and the evils of the modern internet are not a concern to them. So they dont feel any need to change things...

Bahnd ,

For W10 you can still do offline installs with the media creation tool and telling it you dont have an internet connection, for W11 even enterprise users are all tied into autopilot, Intune MDM, and/or a microsoft account. I do not believe there is a method to install W11 without an internet connection and account. If there some some way to get the install tools to do that, I dont know what it is, and I do IT for a job...

Honestly, making the switch to linux full time is not that bad. Every tool, utility and program other than the most niche propriatary applications have a FOSS variant, and it is starting to sound like a bad relationship when people wait for MS to make a policy, change or product that isnt comedicly evil...

Just break up... If you need to talk at the hivemind of the internet for advice, we got ya.

Bahnd ,

Idiocracy is the most unrealistic sci-fi/apocolyptic film ever made. President Comacho finds the most qualified person to help with a crisis, asks them for advice and then doesnt take credit for it. Noone put in a position of power would ever do that.

Bahnd ,

Come on over, the water is fine. I switched to Pop_OS a few months back for the gaming rig and Proton+Steam works almost flawlessly. Older titles sometimes have hiccups, but so far ive only been blocked on one title.

Bahnd ,

ISO-8601 exists for a reason and is better.

I still self host my TS3 for my nerd herd, and as an EvE online player (currently trying to win, but thats hard), you have to be fluent in all voip solutions as they all have different requirments and say a lot about your group.

Discord - small group, utilizing free services, may have an auth tool, used to keep in contact with people from old groups. Remember kids, if the product is free, you are the product

TS3 - mid-sized group (100-1000 players) requires a real IT team, will have an authentication system and generally will have their shit together. Ease of set up is handy, but admin user accounts can break servers.

Mumble - Welcome to the big leagues. (1K+ players) The resources you require now require resources in meat-space and are rather substantial. You need real IT security and people on a payroll. It will drive your admins nuts for about a week setting everything up, but once its done, you wont have to touch it again.

Ventrilo - old school WoW player...

Bahnd ,

There is a difference between having it turn on and hardening it against DDOS attacks while haveing 500 nerds try to use it as coms for massive videogame fights (this has happened, its against the games rules, but it has happened). If you can do that in a day, please empart your wisdom.

Bahnd ,

Yah... That used to be me... I try to keep in touch, dip my toe in the pool every year or so, go to the conventions and such. Almost 10 years ago I wrote my alliances auth system in Ruby on Rails, included those identicons you see as the old default profile pictures on github as the avatars on the internal forum and you couldent change then. The reason for this was that the token for the icon was your name and the posters mashed together so if a screenshot leaked we could reverse lookup who said what.

We never actually caught any spies with that, but that was the level of paranoia and planning that went into a crappy mid-sized group, in the game of today there are actual armies of 10k angry nerds. They are much more casual about it though, which is healthier for the players.

MS being sued for packaging something with windows? Haven't we seen this before?

Squarespace to Go Private in $6.9B All-Cash Transaction with Permira (investors.squarespace.com)

Stockholders will receive $44.00 per share in cash, which represents a premium of 29% over the 90-day volume weighted average trading price of $34.09 Squarespace, Inc. Bahnd ,

I dont know how to feel about this...

My domain got transfered to them from Google domains shutting down and now its being brought under a private equity umbrella... Something fucky.

Bahnd ,

Not worried about that, I self-host everything, its that Google domains were cheap, quiet, and handled the routing I needed, now... I dont know what to expect.

Bahnd ,

You used the right tool for the job, saved you from hours of work. General AI is still a very long ways off and people expecting the current models to behave like one are foolish.

Are they useless? For writing code, no. Most other tasks yes, or worse as they will be confiently wrong about what you ask them.

Bahnd ,

This is my expirence with LLMs, I have gotten it to write me code that can at best be used as a scaffold. I personally do not find much use for them as you functionally have to proofread everything they do. All it does change the work load from a creative process to a review process.

Bahnd ,

This is the sorta randomness I wish we got more of on the internet.

Bahnd ,

12345? Thats amazing, I have the same combination on my luggage!

Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone (www.theverge.com)

Microsoft is starting to enable ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for all users. After testing these briefly with Windows Insiders earlier this month, Microsoft has started to distribute update KB5036980 to Windows 11 users this week, which includes “recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu....

Bahnd ,

I made the switch from W10 to Pop_OS for my gaming rig about 2 months ago. Beyond some hiccups with the experimental branch of proton and just getting used to the new UI its been great. Come on in, they water is fine.

Bahnd ,

Thats fair, I was worried about my discontinued corsiar stuff but was suprised to find that the support was even better than the old driver and managment app I had on my old OS.

Bahnd ,

No, they are 100% correct. President Comacho delegated to experts, which is something very few politicians today would do.

Bahnd ,

If its anything like the private sector its a mostly a liability thing. If something is wrong with the program, you can sue the vendor. With open source... Thats a lot harder to do. Large groups wont use the thing if you cant put the blame on someone else when it breaks.

Bahnd ,

Oh, that one was a blast! I need to get my nerd herd to revisit it... Although all we did was play liars dice while the ship was on fire.

Bahnd ,

The scene was for the burger chain Fudruckers where they kept misspelling the name

Bahnd ,

Am I the only one who thinks they were going for a pixar lamp look?

Bahnd ,

Yes, but some claim to be log-less so while they can see your traffic, they pinky promise not to record it. Proton being one who proports to not keep logs, and seeing as they are Swiss ,that tracks.

(Proton VPN is the 3rd party one I use)

Bahnd ,

That is the tricky part. If you run a public VPN and a governement comes to you and says "give us all you have on user X were investigating them" you sorta have to comply and you cant go telling people that you did that either.

A few of these services will have a line on their website along the lines of "we have never provided data to any governemnt" and when they get told to cough it up they remove the line. Protons data canary has been dead for a long time, and Im not sure if other VPNs even bothered to add something like that.

As for the price tag, I'm paying exactly for that privacy (and also their mail service, de-googling yourself is hard). If I needed a less private VPN I would host one myself.

Fairbuds are Fairphone’s proof that we really could make better tiny gadgets (arstechnica.com)

But of course we all know that the big manufacturers don't do this not because they can't but because they don't want to. Planned obsolescence is still very much the name of the game, despite all the bullshit they spout about sustainability.

Bahnd ,

You can, I had an English vendor ship me my FP4 and it works just fine stateside. It does have its quirks being locked to GSM networks and the 5G bands not being universally aligned between the continents.

Attempt to derail the trolly by pulling the lever while the front is past the switch track and the back isnt.

I made wanderer - a self-hosted trail and GPS track database (lemmy.world)

Over the last two months, I developed wanderer. It is a self-hosted alternative to sites like alltrails.com or in other words a self-hosted trail database. It started out more as a small hobby project to teach myself some new technologies but in the end, I decided to develop it into a fully-fledged application....

Bahnd ,

These may be answered elsewhere, but like some other interested people in this post, I fully intend on trying to load a copy of this when I get home from vacation.

What methods/devices do you use to upload/sync the data? Other than a regular smart phone, were you able to use other GPS enabled devices like garmin or apple smart watches?

And system requirements?

Bahnd ,

This was very helpful, you are an amazing human.

Bahnd ,

The issue is that the market has spoken. People want cool neat things and they want them cheap. Companies were able to lower the price of major devices by including all the always-online stuff as it generated revenue after the initial purchase.

Now everything comes with smart shit wether you want it or not, and for those that dont, the product they wish to have dosent exist or is more expensive. So... the argument that the "naiveity" of the masses is making things worse is valid.

Bahnd ,

1: Dont get between a man and his mix tapes.

2: Analog tech like that was modular, upgradeable and repairable. It also implies a sense of ownership of the vehicle, instead of the system we have now where people have less control over the things they purchase.

Im very much in this same mindset. Will happily drive my car into the ground over the next decade or so and only then start looking. Hopefully there is an electric or hybrid that meets what I would consider low standards, minimal internal displays, an outdated media console and none of that smart-device shit. And before the "you will own nothing and be happy" crowd chimes in, there are some of us who like to own our tools, and thats what a car is, a tool.

Bahnd ,

BGP was that major facebook outage a while ago. But your both right, for big things like that... Its always one of those two.
