Someone gave me an 8 year old laptop to clear down. So I figured I'd swap in an SSD and put Linux on it.

Damn thing wouldn't even boot. Wasn't even that bad a spec machine. 6GB RAM should have been plenty. Shame really, was actually looking forward to seeing how far it had come in the last ten years or so.

Blackmist ,

Exactly. Should have run. Something in the hardware it didn't like. Just got a black screen with a flashing cursor. Never got past that point.

The White House wants to 'cryptographically verify' videos of Joe Biden so viewers don't mistake them for AI deepfakes (www.businessinsider.com)

The White House wants to 'cryptographically verify' videos of Joe Biden so viewers don't mistake them for AI deepfakes::Biden's AI advisor Ben Buchanan said a method of clearly verifying White House releases is "in the works."

Blackmist ,

Honestly I'd say that's on the way for any video or photographic evidence.

You'd need a device private key to sign with, probably internet connectivity for a timestamp from a third party.

Could have lidar included as well so you can verify that it's not pointing at a video source of something fake.

Is there a cryptographically secure version of GPS too? Not sure if that's even possible, and it's the weekend so I'm done thinking.

Blackmist ,

I smiled at her by the photocopier. Now I'm facing chemical castration.

Blackmist ,

Especially when you also don't belong to said group.

Blackmist ,

Or just getting on a plane to go somewhere far, rather than spending three days of your already limited vacation driving past corn.

Blackmist ,

I did for Prime.

Netflix didn't put ads in for me, since I was already on the "4K" plan. Didn't they just throw in an even lower tier for their ad version?

Blackmist ,

He needs two so he can Van Damme between them.

Blackmist ,

Drop requirements for TPM and secure boot then.

That shit is just Xbone Kinect all over again.

Blackmist ,

If you've got a CPU from the last 6 years or so, you've probably already got one.

Blackmist ,

Generation Fucked didn't stick and tbh covers too many years.

Blackmist ,

I don't like food, I love it. If I don't love it, I don't swallow.

Blackmist ,

Expend4bles and Aquaman 2 are the worst films of the last year by far.

Blackmist ,

I feel that knowing what you don't know is the key here.

An LLM doesn't know what it doesn't know, and that's where what it spouts can be dangerous.

Of course there's a lot of actual people that applies to as well. And sadly they're often in positions of power.

Blackmist ,

This is mostly from browser stats though.

Sure, you can browse on it, but I wouldn't have thought it enough to skew the numbers in any meaningful way.

Blackmist ,

I for one welcome our new puzzle solving robot overlords.

Blackmist ,

Or indeed anything from Amazon. Even if it's branded there's still a chance it's a complete fake.

Blackmist ,

I tried to get my niece a book from there for Christmas, and all they had were some ratty used copies.

It's genuinely amazing how far they've gone downhill.

Blackmist ,

And, because I'm not entirely uncynical, does the creator of the spreadsheet work for any of the companies included upon it?

Blackmist ,

Could be worse. You could have paid that to find out you do have breast cancer...

Blackmist ,

Nice try, Richard Stallman.

I reckon that's a glue on beard.

Blackmist ,

Sites are actually 83% less likely to go offline these days.

Source.

Blackmist ,

I feel like that's solvable at the browser level.

Like if I get redirected without clicking anything, pressing back should take you back to where you last clicked.

Blackmist ,

Yeah, you type "chrome" into Edge, and it's like YOU DON'T NEED THAT!

Blackmist ,

I seem to remember RSS's main issue being not really being able to tell "recent" from "popular".

Showed a whole lot of nothing much, and not very much of the stuff you wanted to see.

Blackmist ,

Hey, it's not just fancy autocomplete!

Thanks to years of innovation, it's now copyright infringement as well.

Blackmist ,

Well I'll be a little more enthused if that would ever apply to regular people as well, rather than just people with several billion in VC money to buy lawyers.

FCC to declare AI-generated voices in robocalls illegal under existing law (arstechnica.com)

Robocalls with AI voices to be regulated under Telephone Consumer Protection Act, the agency says. I'm pretty sure this puts us on the timeline where we eventually get incredible, futuristic tech, but computers and robots still sound mechanical and fake.

Blackmist ,

OK. Enforce it then.

Block all calls unless you can verify exactly who they're from. Block all overseas VOIP bullshit. Block calls from any country that doesn't have the same call verification rules.

Amazon could soon be on the hook for safety of third-party products it sells and ships — Government order could classify it as a distributor, potentially exposing it to more legal claims (www.wsj.com)

Amazon could soon be on the hook for safety of third-party products it sells and ships — Government order could classify it as a distributor, potentially exposing it to more legal claims::undefined

Blackmist ,

Good.

If you're taking a whacking great percentage of everything you sell, you need to be held accountable for the fraudulent, fake and outright dangerous shit that you can buy from it. It's literally just AliExpress with better delivery times.

Like, I know that 2TB USB stick for £21 is fake, but the poor grandma backing up all her photos to it doesn't until it goes over the amount of storage that's actually in it and the whole thing corrupts.

Blackmist ,

Use Chrome enhanced privacy protection now.

That way it'll just be one of their closest friends, who might coincidentally sell it to the other 755.

Blackmist ,

Fuck me, 6 million across both browsers and my work PC.

Blackmist ,

You know, I'd be OK with all the AI tosspots breaking copyright if I didn't risk getting a nastygram every time I download Jason Statham Beats People Up For 90 Minutes VII without a VPN.

Either we can all do what we want online or no cunt can.

Cory Doctorow wants to wipe away enshittification of tech (www.theregister.com)

Doctrow argues that nascent tech unionization (which we're closer to having now than ever before) combined with bipartisan fear (and consequent regulation) either directly or via agencies like the FTC and FCC can help to curb Big Tech's power, and the enshittification that it has wrought.

Blackmist ,

Hope he's got about $30 trillion to buy them all then, because that's the only way it will happen.

We need to wean ourselves off the tech giants. And it's inconvenient, but the alternative is a series of greedy rug pulls until the end of time.

Blackmist ,

In one year Amazon made it impossible to listen to albums on Prime Music, and shoved ads into everything on Prime Video.

Easy cancel for me. I can go without your next day shipping.

Better still I can buy from someone else.

Blackmist ,

I know right. It's not like they're going without a toilet or something.

Amazon have slowly destroyed all their products over the last few years out of sheer greed. They're the poster boy for enshittification.

Blackmist ,

Real men piss in a bottle and put it back on the shelf to be sold later.

Blackmist ,

Take the notice period required when quitting and mandate they pay you that much extra when they fire you.

Blackmist ,

I think text speak is a bit older than the zoomers.

But in any case, I propose u're for the sake of grammatical correctness.

Blackmist ,

We had to feed next door's kid one day because of some family emergency.

"How many fish fingers do you want?"

"Two"

Sits down, eats one.

"You said you wanted two..."

"I only ever eat one but my mum always puts two out because she thinks it looks mean if she only gives me one."

Blackmist ,

Thei're. Just merge them. Simple.

Blackmist ,

Have we really got a replacement though? A £200 N100 mini PC is not in the same ballpark of disposability as a £40 board.

Blackmist ,

I mean it was never that anyway, once you'd bought a power supply for it and a case.

I think they're at least powered by USB-C now, so people probably have that already, while the Pi3 wasn't quite within spec for regular micro USB so needed a custom power supply.

Blackmist ,

That would be the point of making panels and wind turbines themselves.

Ideally you'd want enough manufacturing capacity to power your whole country with renewables, in the time it takes for the first bits to start needing replacements.

Blackmist ,

You think the existing system is documented?

It's going to be a mess of things written in 6 different languages, magic numbers all over the place. Unit tests? Predates all that. Even if you tried, the first you'll know about an error is when you turn the news on and there's two trains upside down and on fire.
