And this is exact the reason I'm building a Home Assistant instance with local voice processing. Right now it takes a few seconds to process a request and take action on my crappy 1.8ghz laptop with only 4gb of RAM, but it basically does everything I use Alexa for. This announcement is just encouraging me to build a better server with an esp32 satellite.

Bonehead ,

Honestly, nothing yet. I've only been playing with it for a few weeks. I just use the web interface on my phone to test the voice control. I've been looking at the esp32 devices that people have been building, but a lot of them admit that they can't come anywhere close to the reliability of the microphone array used in the Alexa.

Bonehead ,

Obligatory "Real users use Hannah Montana Linux" post.

Bonehead ,

And everyone will still call it Twitter.

Bonehead ,

Build her a server, install it at her house, set up some sort of automated DVD ripping mechanism so that she can digitize her own collection, wait for the inevitable tech support call, then go spend a Sunday afternoon fixing her server and digitizing her collection for her while she makes you dinner. You get to call it "quality time", and you get fed while keeping her happy and her collection as far away from yours as possible. Win/win, everyone is happy.

Bonehead ,

This is so wrong. You don't stuff the cloth into the bottle, you cap the bottle and tie the cloth around the neck. Then you soak the cloth in gas when you're ready to light it. Much safer with no risk of spilling.

Bonehead ,

Always remember...layoffs come in 2 waves. The first wave is involuntary. The second wave is voluntary, as the people with talent see the handwriting on the wall and jump ship.

Bonehead ,

Don't worry, this law doesn't affect luggage.

Bonehead ,

Except it doesn't activate by mashing the power button 5 times. On my Pixel 8, that activates the emergency dialer that will automatically call 911 if you don't cancel the prompt in 5 seconds. I did not know that before. Probably a better use for that feature. It also points out the different ideologies of Apple vs Android.

Bonehead ,

On my 8, that just activates the Google assistant. To get to the power menu, you have to press power (oddly named button, to be honest) and vol up at the same time. But these are active acts that you have to think about and verify to make sure they did what they are supposed to. Mashing the power button 5 times is succinct. I don't have to guess how many seconds I've waited. I don't have to feel to make sure I'm hitting the vol up instead of vol down accidentally. I count 5 times, 6 to make sure, and I can drop it while being certain that it's going to call 911. That's what I want in an emergency. A quick distinct action that requires no guessing to make sure it works. It makes sense once you stop and think. Nothing else about the power button makes sense, but at least that part does.

Bonehead ,

I could do that...but then I lose easy access to the assistant. I could set up the tap on back function, but that doesn't work when it's in a holder in the car. There are no options that I can find that would let me assign the assistant to open on power + vol up. Unfortunately these phones aren't as customizable as as I'd like them to be. Or at least not by default, but I don't want to go through the trouble of flashing a new OS yet.

Bonehead ,

At first I was watching to find out why people hate Asus now. But then I was watching to see how many times he changes the way he says Asus.

Bonehead ,

Which is funny because the marketing speak screams at me through that entire post. I recognized it as spam not only from the link, but from the "In terms of finding a job..." as well. I know those kind of responses. I've written those kind of responses. Those responses now repel me.

Bonehead ,

I finally paid off my student loans!

If they suddenly forgive student loans given to people now, I'm gonna be so mad.

Bonehead ,

...and so that typing in a url doesn't automatically auto fill with a site you'd rather not let anyone else see.

Bonehead ,

Yes, but I want auto fill turned on for some websites because they go straight to the section that I want instead of navigating through the site every time.

Bonehead ,

Oh come on...640kb is more than enough for everyone...

Bonehead ,

No, and we all know it, but it's still going to haunt him for the rest of his life.

Bonehead ,

Admit it...if your legs could do that, you'd stand up like that every single time. Just because you could. Just like every time General Grievous climbs into a shuttle and does that flip.

Bonehead ,

Technically, Canada is still under British rule since our constitution is tied to the monarchy, and all bills must receive royal assent by the Governor General which is the King's official representative. Sure, we essentially govern ourselves, but the monarchy still holds the reins.

Bonehead ,

That's Leonardo. Donatello is on Mikey's right side (our left) eating pizza and looking confused.

Bonehead ,

That sounds like an Apple product to me.

Bonehead ,

You know how cookies are a big deal and how every website keeps asking you to accept their cookies? Now you know why...it's not a conspiracy, it's just how the internet works.

Bonehead ,

Generating a report using Excel as a format is a lot different from using Excel as a database.

Bonehead ,

No, the biopic is going to be something else.

FTA:

The biopic follows an unrelated short film about Simmons from director and writer Jake Lewis.

Bonehead ,

Simmons is not involved and didn't give permission, but it sounds like they are doing it anyways.

Bonehead ,

the fuck am I even doing with my life

Living. Unlike Mozart at that age. You're doing fine. Just keep shining on...

Bonehead ,

That's how social media was invented. I remember when computers were things that only geeks and nerds were into. And then Neverending September happened, and suddenly normies were everywhere on the internet. We create something new to congregate, and they just invite themselves in after we make it popular. MySpace, Facebook, Reddit...even IRC and Geocities were taken over by them. We eventually took back Usenet at least, but only because it stopped being free for most people.

Bonehead ,

I learned a long time ago that the manufacturer doesn't matter much on the long run. They all have a bad model occasionally. I have 500GB Seagate drives that still work, and some 1TB drives that died within a year. I've had good luck with recent WD Red 4TB drives, but my 2TB Green drives have all died on me. I had a some of the Hitachi Deskstar drives that worked perfectly for years when no one would touch them because of a bad production run. I currently have a Toshiba 8TB that I had never heard of before, but seems to be rock solid for the last year.

Pick a size that you want, look at what's available, and research the reasonably priced ones to see if anyone is complaining about them. Review sites can be useful, but raw complaints in user forums will give you a better idea of which ones to avoid.

Bonehead ,

Turn it upside down, slap the bottom a few times, and it'll open right up.

Bonehead ,

Rule of acquisition : Even in the worst of times, someone turns a profit.

Bonehead ,

It's Pat!

Bonehead ,

If Pat is problematic, how is treating Link the same way not a problem? Especially since we know Link's full story and that he is not trans in any way? At least Pat was progressive enough to show two people of unclear gender and sexuality in a happy monogamous relationship even though everyone around them was treating them like a joke. That was pioneering for the time, and is part of the reason why trans and other non-cis people are becoming mainstream today as the Gen X and early Millennials like me grew up with that and are now gaining positions of influence.

Link on the other hand is definitely male, and has never been shown to display anything but male behaviors despite looking slightly androgynous. But that's more because he also belongs to an Elf-like race that are typically dipicted more androgynous. Then again, he's also a video game character and not a real person, so he likely has no opinion about how he's depicted. So I guess it's ok to make jokes about him being trans? That's probably more of a question for actual trans people.

Bonehead ,

Funny...I'm the exact opposite. I don't want it to detect that I’ve entered the room and set the lights to the appropriate scene automatically. Unless it can detect when I don't want to go into a dark room and be blinded by lights I didn't want on, I want to control when it turns on. Unless it can determine that I'm only home from work for a few minutes to go to the bathroom, I don't want it to adjust the heat settings. In other words, until it can actually read my mind, I want to be able to control it and tell it what I want when I actually want it.

I'm looking into an HA setup specifically to get away from Alexa and host everything locally. I may only want simple controls, but I want to truly control everything myself.

Holmes told Channel 2 consumer investigator Justin Gray that he used his life savings to buy a DeKalb County home out of foreclosure eight months ago as a rental property.

Aaaaaaand there goes all my sympathy...

Bonehead ,

Save some trouble and go with POE. A little more expense to setup, but you only have to run one wire and everything is permanently hardwired.

Bonehead ,

You definitely don't want to see what happens at the Heartpark.

To be fair, the laser tech was likely working on that area that day, which is why they were wearing nothing but a towel to begin with.

    Bonehead ,

The laser tech then removed the hair with a laser.

    Bonehead ,

That's a security risk that would allow dangerous 3rd party hardware to be paired with perfect Apple products.

    /s...if it's really necessary.

    Bonehead ,

First, why is the guy recording?

Strange man enters the home of an elderly person? This is the least concerning part of the entire situation.

    Bonehead ,

In their defense, with a name like Lamb Of God, it was either papyrus or thorny vines.

    Bonehead ,

I still heard "IF I HAD ANY!" at the end.
