Worked a call center in a past life, went crazy because it's back to back to back calls to hit my numbers. Suddenly there's time for employees to watch their AI bullshit?? Maybe instead just let people take a walk, use the bathroom, and cool off between calls? Seems a lot easier..

CaptDust ,

Maybe they could add some kind of auto scrolling view that informs what is playing at those times? That'd be handy, sometimes I can't find anything to watch.

CaptDust ,

Some shows we've watched spend their time "recapping" after the 'ad breaks", playing same scenes we just saw. Drives me nuts, wastes my time and feels so dated.

CaptDust ,

I had this same question, I learned "meat" chickens are called broiler chickens, they were bred to put on weight rapidly. Egg laying chickens are separate breed and grow slower or won't grow to the size of a broiler. The industry is limited by containment footage, so they wouldn't use a male egg laying chick where they could house a broiler.

CaptDust ,

Touch it the right way and it'll raise straight up for you, if you know what I mean.

    Watermarking AI images 🙄

    CaptDust , (edited )

Don't fret you didn't break any rules. The original artist is a bit of a knob for watermarking it, clearly doesn't want anyone stealing his art generated from stolen art. The skateboard's warped geometry is a dead giveaway.

Edit: I'm wrong your broke rules that are in mega thread, directly to jail

    CaptDust ,

Damn why that not in the sidebar

    CaptDust ,

I use rsync with a systemd timer. When I first installed the backup drive it took a while to build the file system, but now every Monday it runs, finds the difference between source and target drive, and pulls just the changes down for backup. It's pretty quick, doesn't do any compression or anything like that.

    CaptDust ,

That work around is what most states that explicitly legalized kei trucks have done, they can't enter roads over 55mph. It's a reasonable concession, you probably don't want to take one over 50mph anyway.

    CaptDust ,

Just noting as a reference these trucks are 11ft long, a Miata is roughly 20% longer at 13ft.

    CaptDust ,

Note that I said over 55, rural connection roads should still be traversable since most are 55. Basically limits them from entering the interstate highways.

    CaptDust , (edited )

I didn't really intend for it to be a comparison or supporting the narrative these trucks are 'too small for America', I just find many people hear small truck and imagine "like a ford ranger but a little less", as their starting reference point. Gotta go smaller, scale is tough.

    CaptDust ,

Maybe in the 70s, a modern 500 is listed at 11.6 ft

    CaptDust ,

"The incident is widely characterized by critics as an example of mishandled customer service."

Made me laugh, that's putting it lightly..

    CaptDust ,

United was booting passengers to make room for employee transfers though, the situation was shit before dept of aviation even got the call.

    CaptDust ,

Some app devs are setting up their own ad networks, injecting inline ads similar to how reddit operated. I know everyone needs to eat, but it's kinda lame when most lemmy instances the apps connect to are operated and funded purely by the generosity of random system admins.

    CaptDust ,

Well, sure Google ads or whatever. I just meant it's independent from the Lemmy platform and instance.

    CaptDust ,

Sorry Elon you, specifically, have to go to space before getting involved in Linux. It's the Shuttleworth law.

    CaptDust ,

I think it's still in A/B testing stages, 80% of my searches don't include the AI but it pops up occasionally. I also notice it more often on my phone, and rarely on my desktop where I'm not signed in.

    CaptDust ,

Are they serious? What a slap in the face to people that bought in.

    CaptDust ,

There's so many tools to do it, too. It's kind of upsetting how many independent devs are investing their time towards removing this garbage instead of literally anything else.

    CaptDust ,

The patient became quadriplegia in a car accident, I wouldn't call it unfit for decisions but definitely someone desperate to find a sense of normalcy.

    CaptDust , (edited )

I don't really keep up with Elon moon shits, but I think the idea is to substitute the brains neurological commands. Research is still on the "read" stage, like knowing what information the brain is requesting. Eventually neurolink will also need to discover how to relay those signals back to the nervous system in a way it understands, engaging muscles and such, effectively rebuilding the bridge that was damaged. Or robot legs or whatever, but the key is first getting the information into a format they can act on. But I'm not smart, this is just how I understood it.

    CaptDust ,

"AI" is a really dumb term for what we're all using currently. General LLMs are not intelligent, it's assigning priorities to tokens (words) in a database, based on what tokens were provided before it, to compare and guess the next most logical word and phrase, really really fast. Informed guesses, sure, but there's not enough parameters to consider all the factors required to identify a rhyme.

That said, honestly I'm struggling to come up with 2 rhyming L words? Lol even rhymebrain is failing me. I'm curious what you went with.

    CaptDust ,

Photo of the Swift Asylum, it's actually horrible! Just 3,600 sqft on 11 acres?? who could live like that!

    CaptDust ,

I mean her parents would drive to NY for singing and acting lessons, the family relocated to Nashville to enable her carrer, paid for private school, beautiful homes... by all accounts her family provided a strong foundation for her to launch.

She's been supported throughout her life, calling the way she was raised an "asylum" is kind of insulting to people that grew up wondering if there would be food on the table or if Dad was coming home angry again. Not to minimize her struggles but I'm willing to bet most people could actually last an hour

    CaptDust ,

It was real the first time it just didn't get past the test audience. Now MS is fine tuning the ads and trying to find a balance subtle enough to avoid a full on riot. They'll get it worked out don't worry just consume

    CaptDust , (edited )

Not to worry MS is coming for shell customizations, too. https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-is-blocking-windows-11-build-upgrades-on-systems-with-startallback/

Start11 will probably last a bit longer because it uses only documented APIs but I don't trust em

Edit: there's also the possibility these ads get injected straight into the official APIs, in which case start11 would just show them as well.

    CaptDust ,

Those prizes suck. You could win a weekend off spending time with your friends and loved ones!! Or a cupcake.

    CaptDust ,

I'm very excited for the concept of passkeys, but indeed it is a bit of a mess right now. Android password managers can't use passkey inside other apps, basically limited to just the browser. I hope it all gets sorted soon and everyone sticks to an open standard compatibility.

I want to be able to export my passkeys and take them with me to any other chosen passkey manager.

    CaptDust ,

Hmmm see this is how I thought it worked but then Google and Apple providers are syncing passkeys around devices without issue? There are definitely backups and cloud syncs happening. I'm aiming to use an OS agnostic provider like 1password which I'd expect to sync across hardware- but with everything in its infancy I'm not sure how that shakes out.

But tbh that does bring up another concern of mine: I have some 200+ accounts, assuming a passkey world where everything is using them, if a user wanted to change ecosystems it seems they will need to visit every service, edit the account and reconfigure their keys instead of transferring the private keys into the new ecosystem? Sounds like a nightmare!

    CaptDust ,

Depends on the baby, I liked seeing my nieces and nephews growing up. Random coworker baby pics though, they get one pic to announce them, then unsubscribe.

    CaptDust ,

Just be careful with the return policy, if your past the 60 day window it locks in a multi year contract.

    CaptDust ,

Stay close child, there is no sidewalk and car traffic is moving at 35mph

    CaptDust ,

Counter counterpoint: no one cares what color the bubbles are, except the person reading em. Sounds like an iOS problem 😉

    CaptDust ,

They can rip Niagara launcher from my cold dead hands I'm never going back to icon panels

    CaptDust ,

The gap/spaced rows are impossible with current technology

    CaptDust , (edited )

I just installed KISS to check it out, this is really nice too! I think niagara has a couple more bells and whistles, but it also could be I'm unfamiliar.

    • sliding across app for quick select actions is missing, haven't figured out how to access these yet (ie to jump directly into composing an email or text)(See edit 2)
    • inline notifications is a big difference standing out for me, I still need to use the notification bar?
    • KISS seems very focused on their search bar which is feeling like a bit more typing. I can tap the circle for an app list but it's on the far side of the phone? (See edit 1)
    • Niagara tries to be smart enough to bring apps you'll want to the front homepage, when youll need it. ie connecting to Bluetooth headphones pushes my Spotify to the top. I know KISS doesn't know my habits, but it seems simpler based on history of launches.
    • niagara relies on more gestures and swipes
    • KISS adding contacts to the home screen is a neat approach, people centric design is good

Overall It's small details though functionallly they seem very close to me. KISS still great and I love it's FOSS. They're doing a solid job of a simple, get stuff done launcher. I don't want to sound like I'm shilling, but Niagara has a free version you could evaluate for yourself

Edit: hmm after digging through the settings I see KISS supports a gesture for opening the app list - however none of the gestures are functional on my s23. Strange..

Edit2: Ah ha! Quick actions are available from the search, and add themselves to the history. I don't love having visible duplicates but it's workable.

    CaptDust ,

Around that time WebOS (under Palm) had the Mojo SDK, it was pretty slick.

    CaptDust , (edited )

I loved it, it's a shame that phone failed to find it's market. Luckily Matias Duarte eventually incorporated the best parts into android. Swipe navigation is almost identical to webos

    CaptDust ,

Sleeping in a car isn't illegal necessarily, but there are increasing popup communities that settle in empty/low traffic lots and live out of their vehicles. Like most of America's problems, our politicans are sending police forces to "clean up" the effect, instead of trying to solve the cause.

Here's an article on Vehicle Residency https://www.thenation.com/article/society/homelessness-vehicle-residency-housing/

    CaptDust ,

Yeah, check local ordinances this is not legal or universal advice lol

    CaptDust ,

NHLC found a 213 percent increase of laws restricting vehicle residency between 2006 and 2019

    CaptDust ,

I was typing up a thesis, but this really sums it up, doesn't it lmao

    CaptDust ,

The currency situation makes sense and I apologize-- I realize now I had a very western-centric perspective while writing my thoughts. I can absolutely understand hosting on your own hardware, as the opportunity cost in that situation is hugely different. I think the next best option is a good server OS and the ghost docker container but you are right it is not as straight forward or easy. Best of luck friend, trust documentation not youtubers :)
