He spends all his time on Xitter so unless something changes about that, his day jobs aren’t the culprits.

I also have ADHD and would benefit from it just like you said, however, I wouldn’t trust Microsoft with anything related to privacy & security based on their track record. This is going to be the last piece in a huge puzzle that makes me switch to macOS confidently.

Not sure if I would like my deliveries to be dropped off mid-air like the picture shows. Good thing this is US-only (for now).

Thanks, babe, I’m perfectly aware it’s not new. I just find it ironic that a tech company would invest in dorms instead of remote work 😾

I didn’t think of that movie, but you’re right!

Ente is great if you need a drop-in Google Photos replacement that is open-source, E2EE, externally audited and private. It’s the perfect solution for families tbh. Switched to it like two weeks ago and it’s been great so far.

Howtogeek is not exactly known for good journalism so it’s fine, I guess.

Cuntessera ,

It always sucked tbh, but I think what the OP meant is that when it came out, it was understandable that it was very limited and not good, yet still innovative and interesting. Apple just never really improved it beyond that.

Which is why I applaud Bluesky’s innovative approach to moderation. It’s truly decentralized and decoupled from the server you’re signed up to.

Cuntessera ,
@Cuntessera@sh.itjust.works avatar

Bluesky has moderation accounts you can follow like regular accounts that basically flag or hide posts according to how you configure them. This differs from the Fedi model where your chosen instance dictates what you see. There is the standard account that every user follows by default, but even that can be configured to your liking. And if you don’t want it on, you can disable it and follow a different account that moderates content to your liking.

I, for once, don’t like seeing insects, something that shouldn’t be moderated because there are valid reasons for posting pictures of insects. On Bluesky, I can follow a moderation account for phobias and have it hide any pictures I wouldn’t wanna see.

Thanks to that, Bluesky is more flexible IMO and requires me to do less for more. Unlike the fediverse where I have to maintain my own filter lists which don’t always work when pictures get posted without alt text or keywords found in the filter list.

Cuntessera ,
@Cuntessera@sh.itjust.works avatar

I don’t know, don’t ask me. People always find stupid shit to be outraged about, but this one is really not it tbh. I personally love it and hope the Fediverse adopts something similar to it or even just reuses the same open source code for these labeling accounts (as they’re called over there), albeit adapted to the ActivityPub protocol.

Apple Translate is pretty decent if your language(s) of choice is/are supported.

    Even in the EU, everything is still WebKit and will remain WebKit for the time being, until Apple changes their policy to make this change worldwide. I doubt any developers would put in the time to maintain two browsers like that.

    There is also the possibility that some governments would crack down on encryption much more than they already do if E2EE was on by default.

    Cuntessera ,
    @Cuntessera@sh.itjust.works avatar

    Or Fedora if the user picks Gnome. Honestly, don’t make users pick distros, but user interfaces. Most wouldn’t want to understand the technical differences between Mint/Fedora/whatever because at the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter.

    Running Windows 7 in 2024 is reckless, tbh 💀

    I don‘t know where you read their call to monitoring chats. They‘re requesting making spamming others harder and requiring more steps.

    Cuntessera ,
    @Cuntessera@sh.itjust.works avatar

    Anything that says their website is broken because Firefox is automatically discredited in my book, especially when they recommend switching away from it.

    Cuntessera ,
    @Cuntessera@sh.itjust.works avatar

    Have you tried registering an account through the Tor browser? If they banned you on that as well, then that’s either creepy as hell, or something is wrong with your setup.

    Cuntessera ,
    @Cuntessera@sh.itjust.works avatar

    This doesn’t address the issue I pointed out with recommending people switch away from Firefox.

    Firefox failing several privacy tests out-of-the-box, according to Brave article (lemmy.world)

    I understand firefox is free software and greatly customisable. I think forks like LibreWolf are fantastic. But I believe the FOSS community needs to be more critical of mozilla. They haven't been the sharpest tool in the drawer for a while......

    Cuntessera ,
    @Cuntessera@sh.itjust.works avatar

    In addition to all of the arguments brought up by the other commenters against Brave’s blatant lies in this ad, Firefox is deployed in school/corporate environments where compatibility is critical - especially for a web engine that isn’t popular, so they can’t be going around enabling stuff that would break websites on people’s computers in a critical setting, for example during a lesson at school and in front of students.

    Mozilla is flawed, but Brave Software is at best just as bad. At least Mozilla isn’t going around spreading absolute lies about competitors.

    I keep reading that Google’s search results are supposedly much better than DDG’s when my experience is the exact opposite. I don’t even live in an English speaking country and the results I get are a vast improvement over Google’s. It has been this way for me since at least last year, but in my experience DDG had caught up to Google in 2022 already. It could also be that Google has just deteriorated a lot in the last two years (which it definitely has, judging by all the bad publicity they’ve been getting for it), so I’d urge you to give DDG/Brave Search/Bing/Kagi/SearxNG another chance.

    I’d also recommend setting an alternative of your choice as the default everywhere and to use it exclusively for like a week before making up your mind about that specific product!

    Cuntessera ,
    @Cuntessera@sh.itjust.works avatar

    The thing about the Apple experience is that it doesn’t only integrate well among your own devices, but also others. Being isolated from that can be pretty challenging, especially if you are the only one in the family. Unless you come up with a whole marketing concept to make the change seem attractive to other (not techy) family members, you’d be cycling uphill.

    Cuntessera ,
    @Cuntessera@sh.itjust.works avatar

    iMessage and FaceTime are really not that relevant outside the US and, as you said, can be relatively easily replaced by Signal. As another commenter pointed out, it’s more about little things like Airdrop or iCloud’s all around seamlessness that cannot be matched by anything else I’ve tried. Family sharing alone would be a major loss if I were to switch. What Google or Microsoft have to offer in that regard is laughable in comparison (not that they’re any more “private”), and AFAIK, there is no FOSS alternative all of the iCloud family sharing functionality.

    Cuntessera ,
    @Cuntessera@sh.itjust.works avatar

    I already use KDE Connect to exchange files with my Linux laptop and it’s not the best, but it’s good enough for the occasional thing.

    Steam is not a solution IMO because it locks you in just as much as Apple while being clunky and giving you the illusion of choice. And it’s only for games. Family sharing on Apple products is more than games. If you’ve bought apps or subscriptions, you can share them with family members at no additional cost (if the app opts into that which is disclosed to you very clearly in the App Store). Screen Time is great to block apps above a certain age rating and to restrict or outright block purchases for children. Another thing is location sharing in the Find My app. I know there are many solutions for that, but I just like the UX in the Find My app a lot more.

    About the Plex server, I’ve heard they’ve changed their TOS and are now pretty shady or something. Also, if I were to make a server like that, I’d be pirating stuff anyway which I already do through my go-to pseudo-streaming piracy sites.

    I could see myself hosting a Synology NAS in the future, but that is still not as convenient or well thought out as the iCloud services tbh.

    Basically what the DMA aims to give the Europeans. Nice copy-paste on the DOJ’s part, but at least they’re finally moving into any direction at all 😭

    Cuntessera ,
    @Cuntessera@sh.itjust.works avatar

    The short answer is “no”. According to Apple’s blog post on the DMA, you’d have to be living in the EU for all of this to work and if you travel outside the EU, everything would continue working for a while and then stop. They didn’t specify after how long things would break, though.

    Cuntessera ,
    @Cuntessera@sh.itjust.works avatar

    Don’t be delusional. Apple would never allow for that unless forced to 😜

    Cuntessera ,
    @Cuntessera@sh.itjust.works avatar

    I‘m pretty sure Lemmy lets you block instances just like Mastodon. In that case, if your instance decides to federate with them, you can just block that instance.

    Cuntessera ,
    @Cuntessera@sh.itjust.works avatar

    While I get the sentiment, your posts are public anyway, so they’re just a tiny step away from being scraped by Meta. Technically, they wouldn’t need to bother with federation for just profiling you or training their AI on your or anyone’s posts. Although, Meta will sure as hell find a way to blacken the pages - one way or any other.

    It’s not a war to win. What’s best will eventually succeed, though 🤷🏻‍♂️ The future is decentralized because - sooner or later- every idiot will realize that putting absolute power in the hands of few that control our speech is maybe not the best idea. Now, that may lay far in the future, but it is the future nonetheless.

    Cuntessera ,
    @Cuntessera@sh.itjust.works avatar

    That’s why I said it would happen in the far future. Even the most stupid dipshits would’ve gotten it by then.
