Had to deal with it then because it was the only option, and until my late teens the only pc in the house was in the home office and it was never just left running.

Now that near silent machines are easy to achieve though, and my pc is right by my bed and on nearly 24/7, I see no need to suffer like I used to (it's also at least partly a sensory processing disorder thing, because I hear components most people never notice).

    DessertStorms ,

I mean, those are just some textbook autism traits (having little to no respect for authority, having no filter, and wanting to be in our own safe space away from people), which is partly why we do struggle so much to find and keep employment (but can do quite well working in an environment that actually considers and provides for our needs)..

    DessertStorms ,

All you have to do is actually finish reading their comment before you rush to make a reply that makes it obvious you didn't:

Should there be a hotline for both cases? Yes.

    DessertStorms ,

both genders have issues that all stem from the same underlying problems (capitalism, healthcare, education).

How convenient of you to leave out patriarchy, which harms everyone, but benefits most men enough for them to refuse to fight against it.

    DessertStorms , (edited )

but then they’ll ask more and more frequently and get fat

My cat's eating habits seem to keep changing (how fast and how much she eats, and when), but I think I've finally figured out a good way to keep us both happy - weigh out the daily portion in the morning, then split that over morning, afternoon, and evening (or just morning and evening if I forget). That way she's not getting any extra but doesn't eat it all at once then whine at me all day for more, and usually has a little food left in the morning (my "evening" actually being late at night), so she doesn't wake me up as early lol

    choosing a lemmy instance (lemmy.blahaj.zone)

Alt: "Choose your own radical identity" followed by an anarchist flag with half of it being blank. Next to it are crayons in different colors, referencing different anarchist orientations using different colours to fill the space. At the bottom it says: "A DIY activity book for ages 9-12"

    DessertStorms ,

One of these is not like the others (throw that yellow crayon in the bin).

    DessertStorms ,

Not with the half black flag it isn't, that's "an"caps.

    DessertStorms ,

Or where they don't get married, or even move in together, because one/both would have income support and disability benefits reduced/removed.

    DessertStorms ,

Ah, got it, so all our problems are the fault of those pesky workers wanting to afford to survive, and not those who refuse to function unless they're exploiting others..
    Makes perfect sense, "economist".. 🙄😂

    DessertStorms ,

Lmmfao, so you're against minimum wage claiming it's a non-solution (and also that some workers must gain further education to even "deserve" it) while advocating UBI, which is a solution on the exact same level as minimum wage is - the level that still allows capitalists to exploit the labour of others for profit (except with UBI, it is the government compensating them from the tax pot, either way, it's working people paying the highest price - freedom).

Never mind that the meme doesn't offer it up as a solution to anything, but more of a bare minimum that neither democrats nor republicans will give, because, and this is the point the meme is actually making which seems to have gone completely over your head - both democrats and republicans work for capitalism, not you.

Truth is, you're just here to flex your "economist" muscles, but instead you're just spewing clueless yet confident incorrectness all over the place.. 😂

    DessertStorms ,
    DessertStorms ,

"Look at how well the democrats allow the capitalists to treat me as they ensure they can continue to exploit my labour for their own profit uninterrupted!!11"

(seriously - start by looking at those companies profit margins for a tip of the iceberg idea of just how much they are making off of your labour before you do a happy dance over a couple of dollars more they're willing to throw your way to keep you from demanding actual freedom)

But yeah, keep harping on about how represented you are in the sham they call electoral politics..

    DessertStorms , (edited )

If you think capitalism didn't create and still heavily relies on racism, sexism, ableism, cisheteronormativity and so on (and no, comparing real life oppressed groups to fictional characters doesn't help) to literally exist, you've not been paying any attention.

Fighting only a class war still leaves an imperialist white supremacist cisheteronormative ableist theistic patriarchy.

Intersectionality is the only way everyone gets justice and equity.

    DessertStorms ,

This took me a while to figure out because it isn't clear why the meme is "Elmer", and not the people benefitting from the division it sows (my starting point was trying to figure out who Buggs and Daffy are that would be after the disgruntled waiter in the meme). Though I don't know how I would make it any better, so I'm no help at all really, sorry lol

    DessertStorms ,

I'm oddly annoyed at myself that this wasn't the absolute first thing to pop in to my mind when I saw this photo.. 😂

    DessertStorms ,

Not everyone has cooking (as well as cool storage) facilities and/or can afford to power them. Cereal requires no cooking and can be stored anywhere, as can UHT milk.

    DessertStorms ,

A lot of people here are missing the fact that cereal doesn't require any additional cost, time, and/or effort to store and prepare (in a desperate situation you might even have it with water or dry if you can't access milk).

So while rice or potatoes might be a better meal, and the ingredients cheaper to buy (but not when you factor in cost and time of cooking), they may still not be an option for some.

For those who have never really been it - it'd blow your mind how expensive it is to be poor in so many different ways (a feature of capitalism, of course, not a bug).

    DessertStorms ,

Right, that's why fast food is thriving despite everyone knowing what shit it is - it fills a hole fast and cheap enough, and you're not using any of your own energy - physically from the utility, but also physically, and mentally, from yourself to prepare it (and before that you have to refrigerate ingredients or keep them frozen so you have to own and pay to run a fridge/freezer as well as an oven or toaster or hob, and before that you have to shop for ingredients, it all takes money, time, and energy of every kind).

The problem isn't how people go about trying to survive (like eating cereal for dinner), it's the people making billions off of the industries and institutions that require workers be in such a desperate state in the first place.

    DessertStorms ,

You can get a rice cooker for $20

If you need $20 dollars spare as the first step, and to continue to use electricity to power the thing as the second - it isn't accessible. Also - did it even cross your mind that if they could afford it, they would get one? It's not like rice cookers are this secret tool only a select few know about..

Seriously, I get that it can be hard to imagine conditions we haven't personally experienced, but it can't be that hard to understand what "dirt poor" actually means, nor to accept that poor people aren't poor by choice, nor are they surviving on cereals because they have better options they're just not utilising as well as you think you would in their shoes, which you are not, and clearly have never been, in.

    DessertStorms ,

Great, now I really want to go for a dip in a noodle lake, and my tummy is grumbling.. Lucky I was already warming up some food lol

    DessertStorms ,

That sounds like it would be heaven, until you had to get out, then it would be an absolute nightmare to try and clean off/up.. 😂

    DessertStorms , (edited )

That actually came to mind when I wrote my reply lol..

RIP Robin Williams (and Ellen Albertini Dow) 💔

    DessertStorms ,

The frustration that we feel over bigotry can be expressed in so many ways. We don’t need to rely on ableist slurs. Alternative phrases are more descriptive, and more accurate; unintelligence is not the prevailing problem with right wing extremists, for instance, nor is it the cause of their actions. Ignorance, prejudice, and disregard for the rights of others are.
Conflating harmful actions with lack of intelligence does everyone a disservice. To suggest that “stupidity” that is what makes people act badly undermines any real accountability. The causes of problematic behavior rarely have anything to do with mental acuity, and we can’t properly address harmful behavior while being so reductive about its causes. Carelessness, bias, hatred, greed, closed-mindedness, indifference – these are the traits that lead to oppression. Our intelligence is not the issue so much as our sense of compassion and justice.

Beyond it not actually mattering what others think, and as others have said - the chance of anyone even noticing being miniscule, if someone looking at you really assumes that only women can use "women's" hygiene products, then they probably also assume you're buying it for a woman in your life and couldn't care less...

    DessertStorms ,

At least "womanly" scents are descriptive, so you know more or less what you're getting, if I want to try out some "manly" scents (they get stronger more effective antiperspirant and I don't mind what "gender" I smell of), I'd have to order all of them (am housebound, can't just go around a drugstore, sniffing) just to see what iceberg, shark, and attack helicopter actually smell of lol.. It's easier to just smell of orchids.. 😂

    DessertStorms ,

Thanks, now I have it stuck in my head (though it's not a bad track, so I'll take it lol)

    DessertStorms ,

This is the issue, not criticising Swift in general.

OP misses the mark in my eyes, not because the misogyny isn't fuelling the recent wave of criticism from the right (who couldn't give two fucks about emissions since they don't believe in climate change), but because it lumps all criticism of Swift together, valid or not, almost feeling like it's pro-Swift rather than being anti-misogyny, and fuck being pro Swift, and excusing any of her actions (downsizing from two jets to one isn't worthy of any praise nor defence, it's not like she can use both at once, and is still flying just as much).

You can (and should) call out misogynists without defending the billionaire.

    DessertStorms , (edited )

I appreciate you hearing me out and yeah, I've seen you around (in a non stalkery way lol) and you don't strike me as someone who would support her, but this one meme kinda does? But then, I'm looking at it from the very far left, it would absolutely hit home with a more liberal crowd, which is probably more the target audience, so it might be just right for that. 🤷‍♀️

I guess it just feels icky to me to have to use she only uses one jet 3 times a day now as a positive thing, plus I have a very low tolerance for lib-coddling lol.. 😂(E: nothing against those who can take it for the sake of educating them, I just can't do it anymore, I'm blunt, and it's up to them to take it or leave it)

    DessertStorms , (edited )

Lol, I love when (especially, terrible) people make shit like this thinking they're making a fantastic point, but are in fact just displaying their wilful ignorance of the thing they're mocking, for posterity..

(To be clear - thinking that using a camera to capture an image is the same as using AI to generate an image shows a lack of understanding of either, or both, those fields)

    DessertStorms , (edited )

If the person who made this wanted to make a point about mobile phone cameras, they should have drawn one of them, but they very deliberately drew an SLR/DSLR (E: though to be fair it would make little difference to my point). There is also nothing here about editing or modifying, just a camera. Both things being tools still doesn't make them comparable in the way they are trying to be compared here. I also literally never said anything negative about AI (it has some uses), yet you are getting oddly defensive of it.
So I'm not the one missing anything, you are the one creating a strawman because you think I said something bad about your current favourite brand of tech-woo lol

    DessertStorms ,

Sorry seems to be the hardest bake..
    (sorry..😂)

    DessertStorms ,

    Porque lo nos dos?

On a more serious note, this is actually a perfect demonstration of why intersectionality is vital, and how classism and sexism intersect - this isn't, and shouldn't be reduced to "either/or", we can hate and fight against billionaires for being exploitative oppressive capitalists, and misogynists who only hate Swift for being a woman singing for other women..

    DessertStorms ,

    Am I missing something?

    yes:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skinhead

    TL;DR:

A skinhead or skin is a member of a subculture that originated among working-class youths in London, England, in the 1960s. It soon spread to other parts of the United Kingdom, with a second working-class skinhead movement emerging worldwide in the late 1970s. Motivated by social alienation and working-class solidarity, skinheads are defined by their close-cropped or shaven heads and working-class clothing such as Dr. Martens and steel toe work boots, braces, high rise and varying length straight-leg jeans, and button-down collar shirts, usually slim fitting in check or plain. The movement reached a peak at the end of the 1960s, experienced a revival in the 1980s, and, since then, has endured in multiple contexts worldwide.

    DessertStorms ,

If you like that, and haven't already, give Rebel Dykes (2021) a watch

    DessertStorms ,

Just to throw some old testament in to the mix - in it, god is non-binary and/or gender fluid, as they use both male and female pronouns (Hebrew doesn't have neutral pronouns), and both man and woman were made in their form.

    DessertStorms ,

    I get that you're making a joke, but still, FYI - https://isna.org/node/16/

    DessertStorms , (edited )

Truth is, it doesn't matter anyway, because over 90% of plastic isn't being recycled.
This whole thing (the removable label to supposedly make the bottle more recyclable) is an exercise in futility and virtue signalling to the "green" demographic for profit, aka greenwashing.

Edit to be clear: the answer is to abolish capitalism, which is why all of this is happening in the first place.

How to constructively protest against AI voice transcription at work?

As a medical doctor I extensively use digital voice recorders to document my work. My secretary does the transcription. As a cost saving measure the process is soon intended to be replaced by AI-powered transcription, trained on each doctor's voice. As I understand it the model created is not being stored locally and I have no...

    DessertStorms ,

Yeah, I'd be sooooo confident and reassured if I knew my doctor was prioritising the security of their voice of the security of my information.. /s

(yes, it can be both, but this post doesn't seem at all concerned with one, and entirely with the other)

    DessertStorms ,

I'm all for avoiding people in general, but I think her actual quote is even better:

"My secret to a long life has been staying away from men. They're just more trouble than they're worth," she says. "I also made sure that I got plenty of exercise, eat a nice warm bowl of porridge every morning and have never gotten married."

    Source

    DessertStorms ,

Seems to me like the authorities are scared of the protestors.
    Good.

I dislike, criticize, and will continue to criticize all billionaires. Including Taylor Swift.

so this meme isn't about you (yet for some reason you took it personally.. 🤔)

That does not mean people rightly calling her out are just hating because she’s a woman and popular with teenage girls

You not being aware of a thing, doesn't mean it doesn't exist:

    https://hannahdiviney.com/2021/11/28/the-dismissal-and-invalidation-of-art-liked-created-by-young-girls-the-taylor-swift-case-study/

    https://www.walesartsreview.org/does-culture-alienate-teenage-girls/

Swift can go fuck herself as far as I'm concerned, but the idea that her, her music, and her fans are treated the same as men in the industry, their work, and their fans, is demonstrably false and born out of nothing but wilful ignorance and privilege.

    DessertStorms ,

Lol, and here I was thinking this was about a hot water bottle, a thing that makes sense to bring to bed (and which I, a chronic pain sufferer must have at all times), not a drinking water bottle, which I think only the young with their still-strong bladders can consider a reasonable thing to bring to bed 😂
