Poorly thought out government policy caused cars to get bigger, not over consumption. Over consumption is a problem with tech too.

Or the cumbox. Or that kid who broke his arms. Or that dog, Colby I think? No wonder AI always wants to exterminate humanity in sci-fi.

I don't know anything about Dune, does it have Magic (the Force)?

Interesting, maybe I'll read the book. I'm trying to read more

    Great reasons the government shouldn't be in charge of healthcare! Your options could change based on whatever party is in power

    Yes, classic stroad design. Although I'm seeing it more often where it's not possible to make a left turn from the sidestreet.

    Can we all agree that whatever version of predictive text we have nowadays is crap, and has been for a long time?

    I'm sick of random capitalisations mid sentence. I'm sick of common words being replaced by less common ones or even downright nonsense. I'm sick of it taking three attempts to successfully get the word I want. I swear it's been like this for five years or more. Can we have a better version yet, or at least the old one back?

    Gigan ,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    It seems to very a lot from phone to phone. My current phone is terrible. It "corrects" words I don't want it to, and leaves in obvious typos.

    Gigan ,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    Or when it "corrects" a word I didn't want, so I delete the part it changed and then type in what I want to say and it "corrects" it again into the same thing I just deleted. Satan could learn a thing or two from whoever invented that "feature."

    So the tens of millions of people that died under communism were all landlords? Wow, what are the chances of that

    Gigan ,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    Do you have a real-world example of a successful communist state? Because you may not like it, but those "communist" countries are humanities best attempts at enacting communism and they resulted in millions of people dying.

    Gigan ,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    I think capitalism is good, but not perfect. Communism is bad.

    Gigan ,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    I think human nature is inherently greedy and selfish, and capitalism is best equipped to use this in a way that benefits society. Workers are motivated to work harder and learn new skills to find the most rewarding job they can. Businesses are motivated to create products and run as efficiently as possible. Consumers are motivated to get as much value as the can out of their money. Everyone in the equation is acting selfishly and in their own self-interest (which I believe humans are inclined to do anyway) but when applied on a societal level, everyone benefits.
    However I will concede that this is a balancing act that requires some level of government regulation to maintain.

    On the other hand, I think communism only works when everyone acts altruistically. Which is noble, but unrealistic.

    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    I agree. Businesses and owners have too much influence. I want more unions, trust-busting, and consumer protections. Workers seem to be organizing more at least, which is a good start.

    I don't think the technology is there yet. As long as people need to wear big bulky goggles and headsets it's not going to take off. Make something that's about as cumbersome as sunglasses and less than $1000 and there might be mass adoption.

    Gigan ,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    I can't believe I'm saying this, but these companies need to pay more taxes. Losing $3.9 billion dollars on a stupid vanity project because they have nothing else to spend it on is ridiculous. Higher taxes would at least force them to be more efficient.

    Gigan ,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    Wow, I'm shocked it's that high. I've never heard of someone using one.

    Everyone in my family has one. We play ping pong.

    This reads like a joke. 50 years of technological development and people are just playing hi-tech pong.

    This happens to me too, and I don't even drink coffee.

    Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone (www.theverge.com)

    Microsoft is starting to enable ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for all users. After testing these briefly with Windows Insiders earlier this month, Microsoft has started to distribute update KB5036980 to Windows 11 users this week, which includes “recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu....

    Jets are far more powerful than humans are capable of controlling. Flight suits and training can only do so much to keep the pilot from blacking out.

    Can they be piloted remotely? Or would that be too dangerous with latency

    Would you rather be poor and look rich or look poor and be rich?

    Gigan ,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    just take the correct amount out of people’s checks and leave them the fuck alone.

    Isn't this how it works for most people with a W2? It only gets complicated when you start adding dependents or starting side businesses.

    Fairbuds are Fairphone’s proof that we really could make better tiny gadgets (arstechnica.com)

    But of course we all know that the big manufacturers don't do this not because they can't but because they don't want to. Planned obsolescence is still very much the name of the game, despite all the bullshit they spout about sustainability.

    I'm voting third party, I dislike them both. But don't worry, I live in a blue state so it doesn't really matter anyway.

    Why do we have to do the health insurance company's job for them?

    Just so tired of almost every time a doctor submits stuff to insurance, we have to be the ones to make multiple phone calls to both the doctor's office and insurance to iron everything out, figure out what the issue is (it's always a different issue), and basically be the go-between for the office and insurance. What am I...

    Gigan ,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    I wish I could Thanos-snap the entire health insurance industry out of existence. It's a giant, bloated, bureaucratic middle-man that makes the whole process more expensive, time-consuming, and complicated.

    I've wondered what would happen if people went on a health insurance strike. If everyone (or a large part of the population) cancelled their health insurance, and just negotiated on price directly with providers.

    I thought the equator was the only part that wasn't distorted?

    Gigan ,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    That's a bad comparison. No one has to take nude selfies. Walking down the street is something everyone will do at some point.

    Gigan ,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    I didn't bring gender into this, you did. This issue applies to anyone. Once you take a nude picture and send it to someone, you no longer have control over it. There's a non-zero chance someone you didn't want to see it, will see it. Is hacking to steal someones nudes wrong? Yes. Does it still happen? Yes. I think people should be aware of this before doing something they can't take back.

    Gigan ,

    Gigan ,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    Everyone is a normie for some things

    Gigan ,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    I always ride on the side walk if there is one. I'd rather get hit by someone backing up at 5mph than someone going down the road at 50mph. And I'm always watching driveways for cars backing up.

    Gigan ,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    it’s about cars turning onto side streets and it happens at a lot more than 5 MPH.

    I have mirrors, so I check behind me for cars turning right and I can see oncoming traffic for cars turning left.

    You have to factor the probability into the risk, not just the severity

    My primary concern is the severity. I feel way less safe riding in the street. All it takes is a semi-truck swerving a few feet, a drunk driver not paying attention, or someone looking at their phone at the wrong moment and it's game over for me. The stretch of my commute that I have to share the road with cars is the worst part and if I had to do that the whole way I simply wouldn't cycle anymore.

    The real problem is a lack of bike infrastructure, but until that is resolved I'm going to ride where I feel safe and that is as far away from cars as possible. And I'm not on an ebike, just a regular one. I only go 10-15 mph.

    Gigan ,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    Less safe how?

    Gigan ,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    When cycling (and driving tbh) I assume everyone's an idiot and they're going to hit me until proven otherwise. I don't cross a street at full speed and assume everyone's going to see me. I make eye contact and don't cross unless they see me and start slowing down.

    Cycling directly infront of cars seems like the optimal way to generate road rage, impede traffic, and endanger your own life.

    Gigan ,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    I'm aware of the studies, but I can't get past the uneasy sensation when a 10-ton semi truck drives by me at 50mph.

    I'm not sure if it's technically legal to cycle on the sidewalk, but I've seen other people on bikes do it and I've rode past police officers and I've never been stopped or told not too.

    Gigan ,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    Trump was right, people just didn't want to admit it.

    Gigan ,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    It's because the app is controlled by a foreign adversary. If there was a Russian social media app that collected obscene amounts of user data, people would be rightly calling for that to be banned too.

    Gigan ,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    I agree with a lot of what you said. I think we need a digital bill of rights to protect things like online privacy and personal data.

    There's two reasons TikTok is different:

    1. Being controlled by a foreign adversary is not comparable to a corporation trying to make money. They will use the data they collect to weaken American interests and push their own.

    2. As I understand it, the data collected by TikTok is so excessive it makes Facebook look mild.

    Gigan ,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    I disagree, the difference in deceleration from hitting concrete vs being caught could make a difference.
