Lmaydev ,

Honestly I feel people are using them completely wrong.

Their real power is their ability to understand language and context.

Turning natural language input into commands that can be executed by a traditional software system is a huge deal.

Microsoft released an AI powered auto complete text box and it's genius.

Currently you have to type an exact text match in an auto complete box. So if you type cats but the item is called pets you'll get no results. Now the ai can find context based matches in the auto complete list.

This is their real power.

Also they're amazing at generating non factual based things. Stories, poems etc.

Lmaydev ,

No it's not.

Fuzzy matching is a search technique that uses a set of fuzzy rules to compare two strings. The fuzzy rules allow for some degree of similarity, which makes the search process more efficient.

That allows for mis typing etc. it doesn't allow context based searching at all. Cat doesn't fuzz with pet. There is no similarity.

Also it is an AI technique itself.

Lmaydev ,

Google's algorithm has pretty much always used AI techniques.

It doesn't have to be a synonym. That's just an example.

Typing diabetes and getting medical services as a result wouldn't be possible with that technique unless you had a database of every disease to search against for all queries.

The point is AI means you don't have to have a giant lookup of linked items as it's trained into it already.

Lmaydev ,

That is indeed a poor use. Searching traditionally first and falling back to it would make way more sense.

Lmaydev ,

They do it much better than anything you can hard code currently.

Lmaydev ,

I didn't say LLM. AI has existed since the 50s/60s. Fuzzy matching is an AI technique.

The current job market is beyond fucked.

Most job responses I get is they're not hiring anymore due to restructuring. Aka they just go for pure profit increase while overworking the understaffed employees. No more remote interviews either. Tons of requests to do one sided video interviews. And the pays appear lower than they were during the main pandemic, even though...

Lmaydev ,

Where I am they can indeed do that as long as your average wage never drops below minimum wage.

So it's definitely worth checking local laws.

Lmaydev ,

Winget, get a popup when things request elevated rights,

Lmaydev ,

This behaviour is intimidatory and aggressive.

They sat in front of a bus for Christ sake.

Lmaydev ,

I use 10 at home and 11 at work and I can't say I've really noticed a difference tbh. Apart from the start menu I guess.

Feels similar to what people said about 7 and 10.

Lmaydev ,

Tbf they genuinely do.

They've invested heavily in Linux and are one of its major contributors. I think they were in the top 5 of contributors.

They realised years ago the Linux desktop isn't going to take off with the average user. So there's no need to compete directly.

Azure actually runs on their own custom distribution of Linux.

Lmaydev ,

When it's the only option for an education I would say willingly is a bit strong of a word.

Lmaydev ,

It is for a large number of jobs though. So its attempt to do what you want with your life or don't take the predatory loan. It's a shit situation all round.

Lmaydev ,

You didn't make it clear this was an email you received.

It looks like you are just commenting in email form.

Lmaydev ,

The idea as far as I can tell is that it's responsible for too many things and gives a massive point of failure.

Lmaydev ,

Just FYI it's not a LLM.

Lmaydev ,

Interesting.

Suno that describes the service as a collaboration between OpenAI's ChatGPT (for lyric writing) and Suno's music generation model

That would seem to suggest it's two models and the audio is generated by the second.

Edit: from GitHub

Bark is fully generative text-to-audio model devolved for research and demo purposes. It follows a GPT style architecture similar to AudioLM and Vall-E and a quantized Audio representation from EnCodec

Lmaydev ,

Nazis are a pretty specific movement. I would go with fascists instead.

Lmaydev ,

I doubt I'd care if I was paraplegic. Very easy to say from a point of privilege.

Lmaydev ,

You've just invented accounting haha

Lmaydev ,

This is Europe not that dumpster fire of a country.

Lmaydev ,

It was over 15 years ago now. Younger users may have seen references and not know what it is.

Lmaydev ,

As a developer I use it mainly for learning.

What used to be a Google followed by skimming a few articles or docs pages is now a question.

It pulls the specific info I need, sources it and allows follow up questions.

I've noticed the new juniors can get up to speed on new tech very quickly nowadays.

As for code I don't trust it beyond snippets I can use as a base.

Lmaydev ,

Then you're using it wrong.

Lmaydev ,

It's intended to show case its ability to generate text. How people use it is up to them.

As I said it's great for learning as it's very accurate when summarising articles / docs. It even sources it so you can read up more if needed.

Lmaydev ,

That's because it's a language processor not a calculator. As I said you're using it wrong.

Lmaydev ,

I know you do buddy.

Lmaydev ,

From personal experience I can say depression, anxiety, constant pain and any disease that affects your energy levels will make you feel like this.

When you wake up feeling completely done everything after is effort.

Lmaydev ,

Unless you like revealed details of a crime that only the criminal would know there's no way to prove if anything you said is real.

Lmaydev ,

You're just not the target audience. Likely too old.

Lmaydev ,

Yeah weirdly my parents (in their 60s) are getting into tiktok, reels and Facebook.

Lmaydev ,

It's by definition a server client relationship.

Lmaydev ,

In both the Wikipedia examples Alice's argument was wrong though lol

Older Computer Programmers & Engineers

Lately, I was going through the blog of a math professor I took at a community college back when I was in high school. Having gone the path I did in life, I took a look at what his credentials were, and found that he completed a computer science degree back sometime in the 1970s. He had a curmudgeonly and standoffish...

Lmaydev ,

I'm around the same time. At my first job I had a stack of reference books for the languages and technologies I use.

I would actually argue things are simpler now based purely on the fact that there is such a big ecosystem of libraries and services available that you don't need to write everything yourself.

It's true it can be hard to find what you want but I've found LLMs (at least ones that search the internet like copilot) are really good at pointing you to existing options.

Apple Walks Back Decision to Disable Home Screen Web Apps in the EU (www.macrumors.com)

Following the release of the second beta version of iOS 17.4, it emerged that Apple had restricted the functionality of iOS web apps in the EU. Web apps could no longer launch from the ‌Home Screen‌ in their own top-level window that takes up the entire screen, relegating them to a simple shortcut with an option to open...

Lmaydev ,

I bet they could if they wanted to tbh.

Lmaydev ,

It's actually a pretty accurate and slightly clever name haha

Lmaydev ,

They're mainly used to train AI so that would be a bad move

Fanfiction Community Rocked By Etsy Sellers Turning Their Work Into Bound Books (www.404media.co)

Etsy sellers are turning free fanfiction into printed and bound physical books, and listing them for sale on online marketplaces for more than $100 per book. It’s a problem that’s rattling the authors of those fanfics, as well as their fans and readers....

Lmaydev ,

I believe they technically need permission to use original characters and settings. But they may fall under parody depending how different they are.

But the things they add are 100% owned by them.

So if a company wanted to they could absolutely get it all taken down.

And likewise they should be able to stop these people printing their work.

But it is all very complex and depends entirely on how much they used from the original.

No, electric vehicle sales aren’t dropping. Here’s what’s really going on (www.cnn.com)

No, electric vehicle sales aren’t dropping. Here’s what’s really going on::Tesla has been slashing prices. Ford just cut the price of its Mustang Mach-E, too, plus it cut back production of its electric pickup. And General Motors is thinking about bringing back plug-in hybrids, arguably a step back from EVs.

Lmaydev ,

How they got rich doesn't change their sales figures. Other countries that got rich in different ways could apply the same techniques.

Lmaydev ,

They also need to know their speed to drive safely.

Lmaydev ,

Never said it was the only important thing.
