Last spring bud light sent trans influencer Dylan mulvaney a personalized beer can as part of a broad marketing push. This drew criticism/calls for a boycott from various prominent transphobes and caused a slight slump in sales. Bud light responded by laying off/"laying off" various senior marketing execs etc, and did not afaict support support mulvaney after it (no loud anti-transphobia pr statement). Very illustrative story of how corporate support of lgbt people under capitalism works

Google's "Manifest V2" Chrome extension phaseout next month is expected to impact the original uBlock Origin extension, which still uses the V2 framework and has 37 million users (www.theregister.com)

The new MV3 architecture reflects Google's avowed desire to make browser extensions more performant, private, and secure. But the internet giant's attempt to do so has been bitterly contested by makers of privacy-protecting and content-blocking extensions, who have argued that the Chocolate Factory's new software architecture...

Omniraptor ,

I assume they just support both with no plans to phase out v2

Omniraptor ,

wait what is "social planning" and how is it different from conventional marketing on social media. That seems pretty far removed from search engines

Time for an ICQ for the Fediverse?

Looks like ICQ is finally shutting down, just as interest in retro internet tools is growing.

dam that's awesome, is your code open source? I want this for .ee

Germany voluntarily divested from Russian gas for political reasons. If Germany was run by more amoral "rationally greedy" business men I'm sure Russia would have happily kept selling energy to them despite the war.

It's probably why a certain someone sabotaged the nordstream gas pipelines, to make sure Germany's moral compass would not falter in the future - as its economy inevitably gets worse without cheap Russian oil and gas.

Omniraptor ,

That situation (apple and Google as sole gatekeepers) is fucked up and should change with the new eu open markets legislation.

Omniraptor ,

Are there any equivalents that don't need a phone number?

Omniraptor ,

Do you know any good write-ups about the ecosystem?

So was google an American psyop for pulling out of China instead of submitting to censorship?

    Omniraptor , (edited )

yeah i dislike the comic because it normalizes/encourages obsessively investigating the creators of your media to find out if they're Nazis. You should read about the author for its own sake because it's interesting, not feel compelled to do it.

Looking for Cloud Storage Replacement, but I don't like NextCloud

I'm looking for something to replace cloud storage for myself and family. I've tried to use/like NextCloud but honestly I despise it. The UI/UX really bothers me, and administering it is a pain. It also just does way more that I want or need....

    Omniraptor ,

I would look into rclone. From what I remember it can mount e.g. google drive to disk

    Omniraptor ,

This would be very funny but for the sake of clarity/safety I hope they get regulated to a single standard sound. As a pedestrian I'd like to know immediately whether it's a car

    Omniraptor ,

So you can still participate on wider lemmy by finding or spinning up your own instance?

    Omniraptor ,

can't find any western countries that have it banned for the general public

    Omniraptor ,

Yes, by being a bigger instance with piss poor moderation. We'd be overrun with trolls and spammers

    Omniraptor ,

I disagree, Lemmy's built in search function is much better than reddit's because it lets you search for comments on any instance that you federate with.

Reddit afaik still has no comment search

Tumblr and Wordpress to Sell Users’ Data to Train AI Tools (www.404media.co)

this could not be timed worse for Tumblr which is in huge hot water with its userbase already for its CEO breaking his sabbatical to ban a prominent trans user for allegedly threatening him (in a cartoonish manner), and then spending a week personally justifying it increasingly wildly across several platforms. the rumors had...

    Omniraptor ,

so take it up with gargron, why complain to individual users..

    Omniraptor ,

At least this way they'll have to work to scrape it instead of getting it for "free"

    Omniraptor ,

Doesn't blahaj zone already run a sharkey instance?

    Omniraptor , (edited )

So apparently Google doesn't know if he's offensive or not.

I get the feeling that the us government doesn't know either, but probably tending towards 'no, he's actually good for america'.

On the one hand he killed a lot of people.. but on the other those people mostly aren't american. And he is degrading Russian society and culture, causing brain drain with his repressive laws, and meanwhile providing business for American arms manufacturers (look up where the microchips for Russian missiles come from). All these latter things are good for america right? 🙃

    Omniraptor , (edited )

And they recently announced they're going to partner up and train from reddit can you imagine

    Omniraptor ,

they're brainwashed into being really obedient pushovers, specifically so they can work as assistants at all. all the "content" moderation is layered on top of that.

so yeah if you heckle and cajole it enough, you can break through the content filters. there's a number of techniques out there, it's actually really funny seeing fancy looking research papers that are basically about how the authors bullied or tricked an unusually well-read toddler.

    Omniraptor ,

Pinkertons as police, but they failed so spectacularly

uhh you might want to brush up on your history there, the pinkertons are still around, still quite closely tied to the government, and still being used (among other things) to suppress union organizing at places like amazon and starbucks! Kinda ridiculous to hear that our government is somehow 'socialist' when it does stuff like this.

Reddit: 'We Are in the Early Stages of Monetizing Our User Base' (www.404media.co)

Reddit said in a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission that its users’ posts are “a valuable source of conversation data and knowledge” that has been and will continue to be an important mechanism for training AI and large language models. The filing also states that the company believes “we are in the early...

    Omniraptor ,

First time I'm hearing about this, can you give any links? Maybe we could use something similar in lemmy

    Omniraptor ,

I'm still not sure what those first two mean.

Hiding vote counts is a good idea imo however, having the info visible can influence people's judgement of the comment and cause people to also vote based on the existing score rather than just the comment itself.

    Omniraptor ,

perhaps not every game is meant to be 100% completed

    Omniraptor ,

Amazing, please tell me you actually used an uncensored/jailbroken bot to generate this

    Omniraptor ,

do they really get blocked? It doesn't make sense to block all tlds except for a whitelist imo. As of spammers can't just buy a .com domain

    Omniraptor ,

I don't think voluntarily joining an org that makes you need mental assistance and mental health support is a great plan. Plus there's the whole "contributing to the crimes of American foreign policy" thing. idk couldn't be me

    Omniraptor ,

ah yes slack the app that won't let you voice chat in groups or store chat history unless you pay $7 per user per month. I'm honestly amazed how they've been getting away with it this long when discord exists

    Omniraptor ,

I was pretty clearly only complaining about the features offered by their free tier, which I just checked does still not let you voice chat with three or more people or search chat history. (The chat history issue is more significant by far).

And yes $7 per user per month is not reasonable for an open source project with a few hundred members that doesn't have a budget, especially compared to discord that gives you unlimited chat history for free. All the open source projects I know that use chat use either matrix or discord.

    Omniraptor ,

Haven't used it myself but a couple comments on hacker news said that it's underrated because it works so well there's no persistent community/ecosystem around it like for other tools

Only caveat is that it's performance in simple cases isn't as good as rsync

    Omniraptor ,

elaborate performative outrage is just fun for its own sake sometimes idk
