I used to use Protonmail and VPN, but one day my password just randomly stopped working and I lost access to everything. Switched over to Tutanota and Mullvad and have had zero issues since.

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Because you have violent tendencies that cloud your clarity of thought

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

On one hand, yea I don't want brain damage. On the other hand, if it means I can move robotic limbs after being paralyzed, maybe it's still worth it?

Like the idea of having neural interfaces that don't penetrate the brain is obviously great, but if that tech doesn't come for another 50 years, what are the current people going to do instead?

I'm not on the waiting list for Neuralink, but if I'm gonna be honest, the hate for it is over amplified.

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Is it terrible that Elon can decide these things? Because no one else is as close to succeeding, and Elon's not forcing me to do it

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Ok but you haven't addressed the point that no one else is as close to doing it..

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Lemmy.ml was originally only federated with Lemmygrad.ml, so most people who stayed around in those days were quasitankie themselves

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Err... Like.. a 2009 Java applet? Those were built straight on TCP. And the lack of security let anyone else in the same LAN cafe steal your password.

The closest thing I can think of that goes for the vibe you're talking about is I2P

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Anyone who cares about this and doesn't require a Windows server is already using BSD/Linux/etc

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

The last interviews I wrote the job posting for and conducted, I made it clear we give you a GPT4 subscription for the job so I expect you to demonstrate your ability to use it as a tool during the interview

one user noted, going to Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop and changing MenuShowDelay from the default 400 to 0.

If that variable means what I think it means, how on earth was it ever approved?

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

No automatic updates? That sounds like a complete win

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

    uniform

Reminds me of my previous job where our LLM was grading things too high. The AI "engineer" adjusted the prompt to tell the LLM that the average output should be 3. I had a hard time explaining that wouldn't do anything at all, because all the chats were independent events.

Anyways, I quit that place and the project completely derailed.

Unexpected pencil and paper test comeback

Wikipedia is gauging interest for an extension that uses AI to see if any claim is cited on Wikipedia (meta.wikimedia.org)

A prototype is available, though it's Chrome-only and English-only at the moment. How this'll work is you select some text and then click on the extension, which will try to "return the relevant quote and inference for the user, along with links to article and quality signals"....

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

I work in integrity at Meta. It's mostly about staying legally compliant with the countries we make $ in. You have to keep in mind we have like 4 billion users, and own 5 out of the top 10 most used apps (hello antitrust?), so it's a pretty big deal here.

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Telegram, WhatsApp, and iMessage are all e2e encrypted but backups aren't. That's how your messages get read.

Messenger is actually the most secure platform out of the 4 because there's no unencrypted cloud backups. However, there's discussion on rolling back the encryption on Messenger because it's too good and causing UX pains.

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

SMS? You mean the paid, vendor lock-in, MITMable traffic? Possibly one of the only options that is actually worse than Discord

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Stats aside, I can't help but laugh anytime people suggest Lemmy is dying off or failing. Aussie.zone didn't used to exist, and Lemmy.ml used to have like.. one post a day? And it would be some tankie nonsense like "I'm a Russian living in Ukraine - Russia isn't going to invade Ukraine, it's all Western propaganda"

Please, for the love of God, VOTE! (pawb.social)

I don't like Biden either, but anyone with half a brain knows there are two choices in the 2020 election. If we had a sane voting system, voting third party might be worth it, but as it stands, no one but you knows your favorite candidate exists and unless you want to become their campaign manager that will still be true in...

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Lmao typical DNC advertisement regurgitation. This election is not 'the most important election in history'.

    Third party of bust

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Why blame the Green Party and the Libertarian Party for the DNC's failure? The DNC always says we have to vote for the lesser of two evils. The DNC always says next time we can get a better candidate.

The parties are the same. The Dems just pretend to be better. When real issues come around, they have the same policies.

    Third party or bust.

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

We looking at different memes, or should I clarify my stance further?

Vote for third party or bust. A vote for Democrats or Republicans is the same path we're already on, and nobody likes this path

Facebook snooped on users' Snapchat traffic in secret project, documents reveal (techcrunch.com)

Meta tried to gain a competitive advantage over its competitors, including Snapchat and later Amazon and YouTube, by analyzing the network traffic of how its users were interacting with Meta’s competitors. Given these apps’ use of encryption, Facebook needed to develop special technology to get around it....

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

    Google VPN, anyone?

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Why split Meta? The poor mom and pop shop only makes 350 million in revenue... Every day..

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

I've got one. All I'll say is don't buy a VR headset anytime soon.

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Step 1. Install the most secure, pure, minimalist Linux distro

Step 2. Get frustrated at the complications

Step 3. Give up and go back to Windows

    • a story I've seen happen more than once
    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Opposite for me. Parents always put me down and compared me to others. When I told my mum I wanted to be a plumber because they make a lot of money, she made me clean the toilets in the house for 2 years.

But that desire to gain your parents' approval is strong. I was a dumb kid with bad grades, and while I got into university, it wasn't a top tier one. Worked my butt off everyday, in part because I never got that praisal. Slow and steady, but I finally made it to a good job.

(Granted, plumbers still make a lot and my parents were kind of dicks for not realizing that, but my ambitions grew greater than that dream)

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

MacOS updates* have never broke my Asahi

*May have to do with the fact I haven't booted into MacOS since installing Asahi

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Respondus used to work on Linux. Maybe reach out to their support? It involves copying a DLL somewhere and using Wine, but that's how I did my exams

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

And these limits will be tied to inflation?

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Even if they know, burnt out software engineers with other priorities are probably not recovering old data

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

What country are you from, constantly living in fear of what you say?

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Dependency hell happens when you try to go against your distro and install something. Someone who used Linux for 20 years probably found a distro that works well for them, hence the no dependency hell.

Or they just stopped tinkering. Either case is solvable by Nix/Flatpak/Bedrock/20+ other solutions

196 Stands with Palestine, but those of you in the US should still vote in the general election.

I've been seeing a lot of anti-voting sentiment going around. Can't believe I have to say this, but you need to vote. Not only is there more to the election than just the president. (State policy, Senate, house), but not voting is not an act of protest. C'mon guys

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Dunno, looks like there's more than 2 candidates to me

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Looked her up. What a legend! Will definitely be using her name in plave of blank "vote third party" from here out: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claudia_de_la_Cruz

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Do dead kids in Gaza make tasty spam? I usually only get it pork based

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Third party and proud gang. A key reason we're in this mess is because people keep voting for the same two wolves.

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

    https://www.un.org/en/genocideprevention/genocide.shtml

Israel is definitely complicit in genocide

In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

    Killing members of the group;
    Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
    Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
    Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

The more I read it, the more I agree with you. The other part of genocide is you must prove intent to eliminate more than just a political group. Right now the Israeli are killing a lot of innocent people, but they keep saying their goal is to eliminate Hamas, not Gaza. They know what they're doing, and likely chose that language to avoid being accused of genocide.
