Is Linux not niche enough for you hippies?

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

insert bellcurve IQ meme about Ubuntu users at the low and high end, with Arch users in the middle

I use Arch, btw

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Not sure the tipping point, but being named Bernie would do it for me

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

I've got a System76 Pangolin. It's ok for the price (a bit pricey).I'm going with frame.work next though - while frame.work is even pricier, the upgradability is to die for.

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

It was growing too. It just wasn't profitable.

These days we have much cheaper ways to handle uploading and downloading insane amounts of video content (if you're interested, I recommend checking out some System Design resources on TikTok or YouTube), but it's pretty much all CDN and slightly more efficient backend services). We also have better ways to monetize platforms. Like data. Buttt ByteDance is also trying to do things like set up physical goods stores/etc, and it's 2024 where userbase and brand name is more important than actual revenue anyways.

This one is good https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghYbFgeqXa0 (on plane atm otherwise I'd link his actual sources too, which he talks about in the start)

You watch GamersNexus to further your understanding of technology

I watch GamersNexus for his brutal criticisms of companies

We are not the same

Windows has overtaken Linux in the "requires customization" department

OsrsNeedsF2P OP ,

AI doesn't scare me.

People like you scare me.

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Amongst many other reasons, my biggest is it's not searchable by search engines.

That's why we made forum.2009scape.org for our project. Yet the SEO is so bad that nobody finds anything we put there anyways.

OsrsNeedsF2P ,

If you explicitly add site:ourforum or quotes around large blocks of text, our forum does show up, but to appear anywhere near the front page naturally is a full-time job and not something we have the resources to dedicate.

I think, unfortunately, things like GitHub discussions are the best place for users to find things off Google, but at the end of the day you're still trusting a profit driven proprietary company

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Deepfakes could get better. And if they do, a lot more people will start to get fooled

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Yes, and now people don't trust Fox News, to the point it is close to being banned from being used as a source for anything on Wikipedia

Nah B knows and they vibe with you because of A, not in spite of it

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Sounds like buying a bunch of Flipper Zero devices and selling them on the street corner is a great investment opportunity

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Not parent, but because of the following reasons:

    • Stability AI for images, and many others like Llama for chatbots are open source and can run on commodity hardware
    • AI doesn't replace skills, it's only a tool to enhance them: As a coder, I can use Stability AI to make cool art, but my AI generated work isn't nearly as cool as when an artist uses AI tools
    • You can't really fight it, so you may as well embrace it

100% RAM is a huge pain on Linux. I have a widget in my taskbar that always shows my RAM usage so I can tell if I'm about to get doinked

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Carelessly running too many programs and not having much RAM.

When I get my Framework 16, I'll either get 64 or 128GBs of RAM. It's so cheap nowadays, the only thing stopping me from getting more is simply the increased time to go to sleep and wake up.

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

There's no good links from the article about the actual wording of the bill, but you all realize this would probably affect Lemmy and Mastodon too, right?

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

You jest, but the FTC is trying to appeal (undo) the merger in court, and this makes their case a lot stronger: https://www.reuters.com/markets/deals/us-ftc-tries-again-stop-microsofts-already-closed-deal-activision-2023-12-06/

For a 68,000,000,000$ deal, even if this helps the FTC by 1%, that's a huge risk

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

They're filing an appeal to undo the merger. What more do you want?

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

    What?? On the internet???

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Genuine question, can screen readers not parse image text in 2024? I personally use some image text to text copy programs on Linux to help speed up my development workflow, so it seems good screen readers have already had this for years?

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

I never liked the CLI, which is probably why I couldn't switch to MacOS after using Linux. My god is MacOS UI "weak" on customization for power users

The problem with Lemmy is the federated content gets duplicated on multiple sites, word for word, which isn't good for SEO

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

There's a lot of startups trying to make better search engines. Brave for example is one of them. There's even one Lemmy user, but I forget what the name of theirs is.

But it's borderline impossible. In the old days, Google used webscrapers and key word search. When people started uploading the whole dictionary in white text on their pages, Google added some antispam and context logic. When that got beat, they handled web credibility by the number of "inlinks" from other websites. Then SEO came out to beat link farmers, and you know the rest from there.

An indexable version of Archive.org is feasible, borderline trivial with ElasticSearch, but the problem is who wants that? Sure you want I may, but no one else cares. Also, let's say you want to search up something specific - each page could be indexed, with slight differences, thousands of times. Which one will you pick? Maybe you'll want to set your "search date" to a specific year? Well guess what, Google has that feature as well.

Genuinely don't know how I feel about the "trans women in sports". On one hand, it is a valid concern for a recently transitioned player to compete in some events, but on the other, I can totally see younger girls see more women at i.e. the skatepark and it encourages them to give it a try too

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

As if the Democrats are much better. They'll give you trans rights but stop short of preventing the murder of thousands in other ways.

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

As someone who has to support MacOS desktop....... It functionally is?

Ok sure, it's not as bad as Android or iOS, but it's far from "anyone can simply download and run"

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Is GitHub wiki still garbage or did they make it easy for anyone to contribute to?

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

MacOS has less customizability and can't run as many apps as Windows, but is otherwise comparable (only better if you ignore the price point: a 4000$ Windows machine is amazing). That said, they're both pretty far down compared to a 4000$ Linux machine

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Compared to MacOS, Windows still has a lot. You can't even control individual app's volume levels on MacOS lol

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

I bet you consider closing File Explorer a basic feature and not customization too

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Only if apps follow the IOS design patterns. I know at my previous company, we didn't. And neither does the official Reddit app: https://frankrausch.com/ios-navigation

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

Ok let me rephrase - nobody without a conflict of interest can audit a closed source application. If Microsoft paid for an audit of Windows, that doesn't tell you anything about whether or not Windows is backdoored.

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

In practice, most common open source software is used and contributed to by hundreds of people. So it naturally does get audited by that process. Closed source software can't be confirmed to not be malicious, so it can't be confirmed to be secure, so back to my original point, it can't be private.

I didn't go into that much detail in my original comment, but it was what I meant when I first wrote it. As far as "does everyone audit the software they use", the answer is obviously no. But, the software I use is mostly FOSS and contributed to by dozens of users, sometimes including myself. So when alarms are rung over the smallest things, you have a better idea of the attack vectors and privacy implications.

    OsrsNeedsF2P ,

I don't know if you really believe what you're saying, but I'll continue answering anyways. I worked at Manulife, the largest private insurance company in Canada, and ignoring the fact our security team was mostly focused on pen testing (which as you know, in contrast to audits tells you nothing about whether a system is secure), but the audits were infrequent and limited in scope. Most corporations don't even do audits (and hire the cheapest engineers to do the job), and as a consumer, there's no way to easily tell which audits covered the security aspects you care about.

If you want to talk about the security of open source more, besides what is already mentioned above, not only are Google, Canonical and RedHat growing their open source security teams (combined employing close to 1,000 people whose job is to audit and patch popular open source apps), but also open source projects can likewise pay for audits themselves (See Mullvad or Monero as examples).

I will concede that it is possible for proprietary software to be secure. But in practice, it's simply not, and too hard to tell. It's certainly not secure when compared to similar open source offerings.
