I got a new laptop at work and everything, every file I worked in, was creating a second copy of itself on OneDrive. It was so annoying and took awhile but I found instructions on deleting the duplicates.

It took all the files off my local machine and left the ones on OneDrive.

Aaaargh!

RBWells ,

This did make me laugh , but think there was a missed opportunity to make her boobs the headlights, lol.

RBWells ,

We actually pay for all our kids' phone service because T-Mo let us add them for $10/month each line. If they raise it 5 per line it will add quite a bit but I think I'd just ask the kids to pay their $15 a month then, or spin them off if they prefer, and save money overall, T-Mobile has already saved us thousands of dollars over the years, improving service without raising the price so they have a little bit of loyalty from me. It may get shitty from now but it's been a good run for 15 years at least.

RBWells ,

I have no Facebook, I want no Facebook. When I got my now job a few years back they said "we couldn't find you on Facebook." That's right, you can't.

And yes I get left out of that communication stream, but absolutely don't care. Like, not even a little bit.

I'm waiting it out. Already my kids see it as "boomer shit".

RBWells ,

Yeah I had acupuncture to induce labor with one of my kids, the water had broken and I was "on the clock" so the midwife called an acupuncturist and they did some sort of electrified needles and it absolutely did work, and is apparently as effective as pitocin, or slightly more so. It was an unsettling feeling to get acupuncture done to induce pain.

RBWells ,

The birds in my neighborhood wait for the wee seedlings to sprout then come eat them. Seeds with micro greens, yum. I have to bird net the garden occasionally or will get nothing. Sunflowers are their favorite.

RBWells ,

2 of my kids are young enough that they were targeted by the micro transactions, but the total lifetime spend on gaming stuff is under $1k, mostly spent on a PS4 and a PC for gaming, bought some Steam games, some PS games and both spent a little in Genshin. But not ever from my money, except for the equipment, I split that cost with them. $0 before they were 15. And they both UNDERSTAND money, both got part time jobs in high school, they make money. I don't think it's unreasonable to throw a little cash at a game you enjoy but it needs to be a decision not an impulse, turn off the game and think about it.

They're not spread out like churches though. Here, it might work, we have an insane # of churches per capita and a lot of homeless, but what about LA? No way there are as many churches as homeless there. Same with houses, as someone suggests upthread. There are few vacant spaces here and many who need homes but in any state beginning with the letter I maybe there are thousands of homes and few homeless because they would freeze to death in the winter.

My second child had a friend Rose, who was the daughter of a lady Mary (of course) who was Catholic like nobody I have met before or since (and I say that as someone whose dad was excommunicated because his wife left him, half my family was Catholic.) She was really nice and a true believer to the point of being batshit crazy but so gentle with her dozen kids and they were great kids. She got them a birthday party only every 5 years, we got to go to one for Rose and it was huge, with literal ponies, but the gift her mom gave her was a song she wrote and sang for her. It was awesome. I don't live in that world but will attest that some fundy Catholics are really nice people, religion does not spoil them, and they don't try to convert you.

Also when the photographer was going to take a picture of all the kids she said, I quote, "Say Jesus!"

RBWells ,

Yeah I think that is the bottom line. I am straight as a ruler and absolutely do not give a flying fuck who has sex with who, it's not my business and I cannot imagine being threatened by it, as long as it's not me why would I care? If you are threatened by the existence of people who love other people there is something deeply wrong.

Pride is literally one of the seven deadly sins, I'd think Christians would want to avoid it.

On the flag design, I think it makes sense, designed by straight guys and looks like it was designed by straight guys. People would get suspicious if it looked fabulous. I do actually kinda like those symbols - they are old, from the 1700s, used originally for describing plants so there is one for hermaphrodite as well. One of my kids is a geneticist and their charts use a triangle for men & circle for women, the arrow and cross ones are better designs IMO.

RBWells ,

This looks like you did ok, I would check the prices on dried beans, those are usually cheap and a nutritional powerhouse. I strongly dislike the junk food you bought (personally) but don't think it's blowing up your budget. I make bread instead of buying it but that's because I like fancy bread.

Overall - if you are vegetarian not vegan, I think eggs, dry beans, brown rice, tomato paste would be good additions and I will add my voice to the chorus expressing dismay at your choice of canned green beans. If you are underweight, nuts too - expensive but so good and so many calories, healthy fat and protein.

If you are up north, it's a good time to start some seeds indoors, grow something you like to eat, if you are like me in a warm place, can start them outdoors now.

And I do think you did OK.

I have a pixel, it defaults to RCS and those do not reliably deliver to my husband, who is on an android Samsung phone. I can't figure out what the big advantage of RCS is.

Reddit Is Letting Power Users In on Its IPO. Not Everyone’s Buying (www.wired.com)

Reddit Is Letting Power Users In on Its IPO. Not Everyone’s Buying::Reddit says it wants to reward users by letting them buy into the company’s public listing. Some say it’s too risky—others say they won’t pay a company they’ve already given hours of free labor to.

RBWells ,

I got one even though I've not posted in months, let it go when I made an account here. Old account though so maybe whatever algorithm they used didn't look for recency. I don't think I'm interested, it seems to me they have already passed the peak and are on their way down, and going public will surely just accelerate the decline.

RBWells ,

I do have always gaming dice, a Rubik's Cube and a crow whistle; but miss the purse I had in high school that seemed to always have exactly what was needed at any given time. If someone needed a screwdriver, I'd have accidentally left one in my purse, really anything anyone asked for that was purse sized would always be there that day. One time I had a chicken sandwich when someone said they were hungry, even though I didn't usually put food in there. It was the most useful purse ever and I've never had another magic one.

What can you get to within a 15-minute walk of your house?

A recent YouGov survey asked Americans what they think they should be able to get to within a 15-minute walk of their house.

Of these choices, I can currently walk to all of them from my apartment, aside from a university (no biggie, I'm not currently studying, although there is a Tafe within walking distance), a hospital, and a sports arena.

How many can you get to with a 15 minute walk from your house?

I'm in one of the less walkable, more car centric cities, but have made a lifelong effort to live where I can walk to things and have a few bus routes nearby. The buses have been starved and some come only every hour now but I can walk to:

Work

Cafe

Corner store

Bank (but I bank online)

Doctor and dentist (dentist more like half hour walk but sidewalk all the way) also every specialist doctor

A pot dispensary

Drugstore

Several restaurants

And believe it or not, a stadium.

No bar :(

ETA: Grocery, yes but not on the path to/from work so wildly inconvenient, and I can still walk to a comic shop but it's on the other side of the river now and while the bridge has sidewalks there is no barrier between cars and the sidewalk, it's more like a pedestrian lane in the road!

RBWells ,

Yeah it sucks. If it's coded as "screening" it's covered. As a tip - my GYN says she can see as much in the 3d mammogram as she can with the regular plus ultrasound and that one she can code as screening and it costs about $25 as an add-on.

RBWells ,

Our dryer does this to us:

Put clothes in, start it - it estimates 35 units of time. Come back in 15 minutes to check, it says 15 units left. Come back in 15 minutes, it now says 21 units left.

I am, like all of us, unsure of the fundamental nature of time. But the dryer even more so. The units are not one standard length, and they don't move always in the same direction.

RBWells ,

My kids say:

Birth to 30 is young.

31-60 is middle aged.

Over 60 is old.

Over 90 is fucking old.

People are aging more slowly than they did in the past, better information about health now. Look up 55 year old celebrities. These are certainly middle aged people, they aren't young, and most don't look old either. That is how I would define middle age and it's getting longer. You can't get old at 40, you will be old too long.
