Why is replacement for home device controls so complicated?

I recently learned about Home Assistant here on Lemmy. It looks like a replacement for Google Home, etc. However, it requires an entire hardware installation. Proprietary products just use a simple app to manage and control devices, so can someone explain why a pretty robust dedicated device is necessary as a replacement? The...

ShepherdPie ,

Plus the benefit of running HA on this hardware is that you can often eliminate the proprietary hubs and sometimes cloud-based communication.

ShepherdPie ,

Yeah that person's take seems a little unhinged as throwing people in prison after a car accident only happens if they're intoxicated or driving recklessly. These systems don't have to be perfect to save lives. They just have to be better than the average driver.

ShepherdPie ,

Demand is down because these vehicles are pushing $100k and interest rates on car loans are 7-8%. They did recently announce some new, cheaper models in the near future so it may turn around for them.

ShepherdPie ,

So maybe "I just learned how to ride horses in my 40s look?"

ShepherdPie ,

Because it's an extremely narrowly defined set of requirements in order to use it. It's "approved freeways with clear markings and moderate to heavy traffic under 40MPH during daytime hours and clear conditions" meaning it will inch forward for you in bumper to bumper traffic provided you're in an approved area and that's it.

https://www.mbusa.com/en/owners/manuals/drive-pilot

ShepherdPie ,

They're not confident enough to assume the risk if you look at the requirements you have to meet to use it. Under 40MPH on approved freeways in heavy traffic during daylight hours with clear skies and clear markers painted on the ground. This is essentially useless for a majority of people as it's just going to inch ahead for you in gridlock traffic provided the road meets all the other requirements.

ShepherdPie ,

We used to make cars without hot fixes, we don’t need to start. It will allow auto manufacturers to further cut corners and push for faster releases with less testing, and we pay the price with our lives.

Is that borne out in the data though? It seems modern vehicles are way safer and more reliable compared to older vehicles.

ShepherdPie ,

This is what Craigslist did and now nobody uses it and we're forced to use the garbage platform that is Facebook Marketplace.

ShepherdPie ,

Doesn't matter what he does with regard to FCC appointments since the next guy can just undo it again.

ShepherdPie ,

Probably 90% of what companies call AI these days isn't AI based either.

ShepherdPie ,

I've bought one drive from them so far (14TB WD) and haven't had any issues thus far after 8 or 12 months.

ShepherdPie ,

They're much cheaper than $20 off a new drive. I bought a 14TB WD server drive from them within the last year for less than it cost me to get an 8TB Elements/Easystore on sale back in 2018. It was easily 50% of the new price for a similar drive.

ShepherdPie ,

Or just buying a regular TV and not connecting it to the internet. Signage TVs are specialized and will cost a lot more for a lot less.

ShepherdPie ,

Because they're a specialty product sold to businesses not mass produced products sold to budget-minded consumers.

I also doubt they're technologically superior as they're just designed to display a static McDonalds menu for 18 hours a day, not play Dune in HDR at a massive bitrate. I'm no fan of tracking or similar corporate bullshit surrounding advertising but you're making a lot of (almost entirely) assumptions here about these signage displays. You'll likely be paying more than 2x the price of a comparable model considering these are likely equivalent to Black Friday TVs.

ShepherdPie ,

Being skeptical of anything online isn't really a bad thing IMO. There's so much garbage to wade through.

ShepherdPie ,

There are numerous other popular search engines out there though.

ShepherdPie ,

Seems like this one is in good company then.

ShepherdPie ,

Okay I stuffed my holes full of little Spidermen, but I'm not clear how that's supposed to prevent spiders from getting in my shoes. Also it's very uncomfortable to sit down like this.

ShepherdPie ,

So majestic.

ShepherdPie ,

At least now you know why the last person got rid of it.

ShepherdPie ,

If the system is working, what's the big deal? Is not like this needs to be running on windows 11 with the ability to send out tweets and Instagram posts. Relying on floppies may seem archaic but it's better than spending $10B and years of 'project delays' just to wind up with a functionally similar system using modern hardware.

ShepherdPie ,

That's probably the real driver here behind the push to upgrade and the article. Some grubby, underqualified company wants a giant contract with little responsibility to deliver a working product.

ShepherdPie ,

This was my immediate thought too. Even people 2-3 levels of management above me struggle to understand our job let alone the person 5-6 levels up in the executive suite.

ShepherdPie ,

Finally a good use of the "I did that" Biden stickers.

ShepherdPie ,

$5.5B with a yearly revenue of $4 million and a loss of $58 million. Even if they had $0 in expenses, it'd still take a little under 1400 years to earn the equivalent of their market cap.

ShepherdPie ,

How are either of those a monopoly? A monopoly generally means you only have one option and that option is taking advantage of their outrageous market share by jacking up prices.

Where I live the only broadband internet is Comcast which is why I pay 2-3x more for my service than comparable services in areas where they don't have a monopoly (or areas with sane regulations).

Saying that you'll not earn as much money if you don't put your game on steam doesn't mean steam has a monopoly, it just means you're not getting as much reach as you could. Being popular doesn't equate to being a monopoly.

ShepherdPie ,

"Every person who isn't a murderer is just a murder away from becoming a murderer. Timebomb!"

I get your point, but this metaphor would be more applicable if historically every human on earth murdered someone during their lifetime. I think Steam/Valve will remain the same as long as their current leadership is in place. 999 times out of 1000, once the original founders are gone, any company begins the enshittification process, whether it's a major business like Valve or a local chain of grocery stores.

ShepherdPie ,

I didn't say anything about abandoning it, just that it's bound to happen eventually like with any other business unlike people and murder.

Roku explores taking over HDMI feeds with ads (www.lowpass.cc)

Roku is exploring ways to show consumers ads on its TVs even when they are not using its streaming platform: The company has been looking into injecting ads into the video feeds of third-party devices connected to its TVs, according to a recent patent filing.  ...

ShepherdPie ,

At the 76 here its also the second down from the right but only needs a single press.

ShepherdPie ,

Yeah the moral thing to do is pay a third party company $130 per year who then pays an artist $0.20 per billion streams of their work.

ShepherdPie ,

How is that the moral avenue? You want these artists to fade into obscurity because nobody can ever hear their music while also not earning any money?

ShepherdPie ,

"Hitachi Magic Wand - slightly used - $199 - No low ballers I know what I got. WILL NOT respond to "is this still available" serious buyers only"

ShepherdPie ,

Yes, lately I've been getting a ton of local police department posts from cities on the other side of the country and I'm a firm ACAB person.

ShepherdPie ,

Do you really think Joe Biden is sitting on his phone scrolling through the Fediverse and reading comments from us while he's taking a dump?

I seriously doubt it's anyone but some young PR person.

ShepherdPie ,

Mine is so secret that even I don't remember what it is, which will be fun when I need to thaw it out.

Can you walk me through debouncing please

The other day, @tifriis posted an awesome article about Zigbee network performance and it brought attention to something I was unaware of, which is that my devices aren't supposed to shout all day, everyday about doing mostly nothing. I immediately followed the advice in the article and tried to debounce everything. But then...

ShepherdPie ,

Maybe I'm missing some context here, but 'debouncing' is just accounting for the fact that every switch, when pressed, will bounce on and off the contact for a few milliseconds. If you didn't account for this, then turning your light on would cause it to flicker on and off rapidly until the switch settles.

Your zigbee devices phoning home all day while not being used shouldn't have anything to do with debouncing.

ShepherdPie ,

In that article:

The only “workaround” I can think of is to use a better coordinator (EFR32MG21) and have many routers deployed in your network, so this device doesn’t crash it.

ShepherdPie ,

Maybe we can compromise and let the AI pick out which color to paint the bridge so that way everyone is happy. Have you seen Terminator?

ShepherdPie ,

I didn't read about it online first, but a friend and I once microwaved some weed to speed up the curing process. It didn't work at all.

At least OP didn't first come across that story about microwaving your IPhone in order to charge it.

ShepherdPie ,

It sucks but I'm sure this has to do with preventing fraud. It would be suspicious if some inactive account just started buying hundreds/thousands of dollars of items that hold no 'real' value. Then you wind up with a charge back from a stolen credit card and a seller without their items.

ShepherdPie ,

The Taskbar setting just hides it, no? Sounds like the previous commentor uninstalled it completely.

ShepherdPie ,

Much like HBO getting rolled into a tiny section of a greater app full of garbage even though it was the most successful thing previously.

ShepherdPie ,

People were able to do that before this law so what's changed?

ShepherdPie ,

What innovation would that be, exactly?

Why do all the new TVs expect me to have a platform AS WIDE as the fucking thing?? Fucking shit!! God awful absolutely dumb thoughtless design choice (lemmy.world)

luckily this is just a 32; i had a 70 from the same brand with the same INSANELY FUCKING STUPID STAND DESIGN that i had to find something for....literally at the most extreme edges of the thing, what the fuck is this? this is so fucking stupid, it cannot be meaningfully cheaper than a proper design and it looks fucking dumb as...
