You want to see creativity, hand some weed to a group of people without a pipe or lighter and they'll be high in 15 minutes.

ShepherdPie ,

How ableist of you to assume that we could read your reply.

ShepherdPie ,

God I've been watching through Bleach and it's like this. Each 22 minute episode is really only about 12 minutes long with the rest being a 5 minute recap of the previous episode, the intro, credits, and post credit filler.

Edit: a tangent of this would be watching a sitcom with the laugh track removed. Imagine seeing the actors awkwardly standing there in silence in the middle of their dialog where the laugh track would normally be inserted.

A funny second tangent is the musicless music videos on YouTube. Definitely worth checking out for a laugh.

$1000-$2000 cars are the $500 beaters from 10+ years ago. I wouldn't say most people are looking in this price range and they're usually on their last leg and the cheapest option for a car. There are cellphones that cost more than this now.

ShepherdPie ,

Those "more affordable foreign cars" are only priced that low because the Chinese government is subsidizing them so much, which is only temporary and lasts just as long as it takes to put their competitors out of business.

This is a race to the bottom just like states giving trillion dollar corporations billions in tax breaks as an incentive to move to their state. At the end of the day, it just harms everyone and should be avoided, which is why the US and EU are putting tariffs on Chinese EVs. They're still free to sell them at the real cost and actually compete with everyone else.

ShepherdPie ,

You're literally describing every new car now, whether EV or ICE.

ShepherdPie ,

There's the Nissan Leaf, Chevy Bolt/Spark, Mini Cooper EV, Hyundai Kona/Ioniq 6, Fiat 500e and more. These qualify for subsidies if purchased new plus all the gas savings make them decently affordable or you can always buy them used as most people do.

Most people are going for the midrange models like the Model Y, Model 3, Ioniq 5, etc though since it's not really ideal to buy the 'worst' version of something when making a large purchase. People want more range, space, and features. Even with ICE cars, the subcompacts sell/sold pretty poorly.

ShepherdPie ,

If you go to canyouseeme.org and test your Plex port does it show as open?

Your new ISP might have CG-NAT meaning you don't get your own IPv4 address and can't be connected to directly.

Also stream a movie from your phone while connected to cellular data and then check that stream on the Plex admin screen to see what it says. IIRC the Plex Relay is fixed at 1mbps

ShepherdPie ,

Replaced by the ruling capitalistic class decades ago? When exactly have we ever not been ruled over by these people?

ShepherdPie ,

My ID picture is still the same one I took in my early 20s (almost 40 now), and even when I do get carded, 75% of the time they make a comment about how my "picture is really old," "I look really young," etc, etc which is always a punch to the gut.

ShepherdPie ,

It's actually "Idaho."

ShepherdPie ,

I find this a bit odd as you make it seem as if ordering is a complicated process that takes some thought and planning. The whole draw of McDonalds is that you get the exact same food wherever you may be and their options are fairly limited. Ham/cheeseburger, chicken burger, fish sandwich, or nuggets is pretty much your array of options.

I personally dislike the ordering screens as they make the process way to drawn out. Let me just pick a #1, the size, and the drink and be done with it in 3 taps. Last time I used one, it wanted me to basically build my own meal as if I was ordering Dominoes online and building my own pizza.

ShepherdPie ,

"We have a hole in the side of the ship, but I, your elected leader, have liberally sprayed a can of flex seal on the hole."

ShepherdPie ,

How realistic is this though?

I thought most people slap a GoPro on their drone (admittedly know very little about the hobby) and how would China secretly be transmitting so much data (4k video) without anyone noticing?

Plus if they want surveillance video, they can just have someone fly their own drone here and capture exactly what they want without having to wade through tons of junk that isn't important to them.

ShepherdPie ,

When they send the emails at night, it's called nocturnal emishing. It's a serious problem that affects thousands of people each night.

ShepherdPie ,

I think they would have a decent future if they dropped this guy. His personal "brand" used to bring a lot of value and attention but now it's just an anchor weighing all these companies down.

ShepherdPie ,

Bruh, it's just basic math.

ShepherdPie ,

Looks like only the S and X still use 18650s. The 3 and Y are using larger 2170 cells and apparently they're also buying from LG not just Panasonic.

ShepherdPie ,

Sodium batteries are cheaper and less volatile I believe but they're also much less energy dense meaning you need a heavier pack to get a similar amount of range (which also reduces range from the extra weight). I think they're better suited for stationary applications like solar banks and other energy storage solutions.

ShepherdPie ,

You're still paying the money either way. Buying from the manufacturer typically means paying a much lower price.

ShepherdPie ,

How do centrifugal forces determine which seat you're sitting in inside of a car? Everyone in the car is going to be experiencing the same forces.

ShepherdPie ,

I actually don't. Can you describe how sitting in a vehicle driving forward mimics the force of a record spinning in a circle?

ShepherdPie ,

You don't need to expose radarr/sonarr to the internet. Only your torrent client needs external access which would be routed through a VPN that offers port forwarding like AirVPN.

For hardware, I'm a big proponent of DIY. A NAS is very expensive and limiting since it has a fixed amount of bays. It's much more econonomial to buy a case that can hold a ton of drives like the Fractal Design Define series and then run your own hardware. I'd suggest 32GB of RAM, a modern i5 CPU with QuickSync (for Jellyfin), and a motherboard that has as many SATA ports as you can get. Check PCPartPicker to compare features and prices.

To run everything, you might look into using Proxmox and then running all your stuff off that in VMs or containers.

I'd probably keep PiHole separate since you only need a RPi3 and you don't want your whole network to go down if you restart the server. The rest can be run off the server.

ShepherdPie ,

That began in 2020 for them.

ShepherdPie ,

I have a couple and they are great machines but don't completely fill the space for the Pi which works great in embedded systems along with having so many accessories, hats, etc.

ShepherdPie ,

They did spend the last few years screwing over any customer that wasn't some giant corporation on a product that was originally created as a low cost tool for educational purposes.

ShepherdPie ,

During covid they essentially stopped selling to people and only sold to corporations with big orders which caused ridiculous scalping whenever a measly batch dropped for consumers. It wasn't until around the end of last year that people were able to buy them at regular prices again.

ShepherdPie ,

Maybe it's best if I just hook up some USB drives to my Pi and get my hands dirty with that. If the performance is not too bad (like you said).

Just do this and grow as you learn. If you buy WD Easystore/Elements/MyBook external drives, they can be very easily removed from their enclosures later and installed internally.

The only caveat here is that a Pi is going to be terrible for Jellyfin unless you only download media that is 100% compatible with the devices you're watching it on. If any transcoding is needed, the Pi won't keep up. A NUC or Optiplex Micro might work better here as they both have full-fledged PC hardware and aren't too much more than a Pi.

ShepherdPie ,

The Define series of cases from Fractal are also an excellent option. I have 9 HDD and a 5.25" optical drive in mine (Define R6) with room to spare and the whole thing is silent.

ShepherdPie ,

I'm not sure as I've always stuck to WD drives. You should be able to Google the model + "shuck" and see if anyone else has done it. I know certain models either solder the controller to the drive or add it internally so that there's no standard SATA port.

The larger clients should work the same as the micro sized ones, but don't expect to get much more use out of them than maybe being able to store a drive internally as they're typically full of proprietary connectors and stripped down motherboards. I'd only bother with one if you can buy it cheaper than one of the micro sized options like the Optiplex 3050

ShepherdPie ,

Not much action happening over there it seems.

A PR disaster: Microsoft has lost trust with its users, and Windows Recall is the straw that broke the camel's back (www.windowscentral.com)

It's a nightmare scenario for Microsoft. The headlining feature of its new Copilot+ PC initiative, which is supposed to drive millions of PC sales over the next couple of years, is under significant fire for being what many say is a major breach of privacy and security on Windows. That feature in question is Windows Recall, a...

ShepherdPie ,

We handle a lot of IP on our Windows PCs so it's debatable. However, in recent years, Microsoft has taken over most of our services with SSO, office 360, teams, etc so who knows.

ShepherdPie ,

I'm always shocked when I get the old style as who the hell needs that much paper most of the time?

ShepherdPie ,

Assuming they don't have a forced arbitration clause, you'd probably win in small claims court because it'd cost them a ton of money to send a lawyer there to argue the case over a ~$1,000 phone.

ShepherdPie ,

It's absolutely true. I used to drive my 6,000 lb squarebody all over the Oregon sand dunes in 2wd because it had big, wide tires that I'd drop down to 10 PSI. This had a stock small block V8 that probably put out a whopping 150HP.

Just tire pressure alone can make or break even the most capable vehicle. You need to float on the surface, not dig in. Street tire pressure will make your vehicle dig in and get stuck immediately regardless of weight or horsepower.

ShepherdPie ,

I don't have an exact number but it was fine with my tires. Newer, low profile tires can't do it because the sidewalls are so short but the tires on the CT look meaty enough to handle these low pressures.

The issue is more about popping the bead off the wheel than your wheel touching the ground.

Spotify is raising the cost of Premium subscriptions, again (www.engadget.com)

Spotify is officially raising its Premium subscription rates in the US come July, following reports of the move in April. The platform is increasing its Individual plan from $11 to $12 monthly and its Duo plan from $15 to $17 monthly — the same jump as last year's $1 and $2 price hikes, respectively. However, its Family plan...

ShepherdPie ,

This is the biggest problem for me. I have thousands of movies and 10s of thousands of TV episodes, but my audio library is still all the same stuff I downloaded from Napster, Limewire, Kazaa 20+ years ago. It's too hard to find a good selection these days outside of a few private trackers. I'm in several private trackers but I'm not going to sit in a queue for 2 days waiting for an interview time and jump through hoops to join something like RED or PTP tier tracker.

Not to mention I mostly listen to podcasts these days and when I do listen to music, I try to find new stuff that I've never heard of rather than searching for a known artist. This would be way too convoluted to do on my own with some self-hosted solution.

ShepherdPie ,

"Nugs" sounds like it should be an online weed delivery service.

ShepherdPie ,

Does this work with any other services like spotify? I know Tidal is lossless but I already have Spotify and Lidarr.

ShepherdPie ,

I have a Galaxy Watch4 and it would last me about 3 days new and is down to around two days now. I've already bought a replacement battery but haven't bothered to put it in yet.

This is with the always on display off and everything else on including wifi.

ShepherdPie ,

What is your HDD setup using the NUC? Are you just using external drives via USB?

ShepherdPie ,

I've just been looking for a future solution when I retire my desktop. I wanted a lower power PC like a NUC but I currently have 9 or 10 HDDs in the PC which won't work as a bunch of external enclosures and a NAS would be not worth the money for this many drives.

Maybe I'll just get an i5 with QuickSync and an ITX or micro ATX for the next revision

ShepherdPie ,

It's all we can use at work besides Edge which is just a reskinned Chrome.

On my personal devices it's 100% Firefox as they have great features like sharing pages between devices and extensions on the mobile browser.

ShepherdPie ,

No everything is managed by IT due to IP concerns. We don't even have privileges to install programs on the computer.

ShepherdPie ,

This is a large corporation and they laid off all the IT staff a few years ago in favor of outsourcing it to some far-off company.

ShepherdPie ,

I don't think so. I'm assuming this would be more common in a programming type industry. We're more of a R&D type manufacturing facility.
