ShepherdPie ,

For the briefest of moments, I got fucking jazzed that I might be able to get a 10Gbps connection at my home. Those hopes were quickly dashed when I looked it up and discovered that it was nothing more than a marketing term promising some unnamed 'faster speed' at some unknown point in the future.

ShepherdPie ,

The same thing was said about self-driving. I recall arguing with people on reddit back in like 2018 who called me an idiot because I didn't believe we'd have full autonomous driving within the next few years. I swear these people jump from one fad to the next and dive into each one head first.

ShepherdPie ,

AI is clickbait, too, so does that mean they cancel each other out or is the clickbait twice as strong?

ShepherdPie ,

I don't think that's necessarily true. We aren't hearing about "blockchain," "crypto," or "NFTs" every day anymore either even though they all still exist.

How Do I Avoid Giving Home Address to Bank?

I've heard of things like iPostal and Traveling Mailbox. Do these services allow you to register with bank, DMV, IRS, Voting, etc? How do they work? Would a normal P.O box using its physical address from USPS work? I've tried researching it and haven't gotten clear answers....

ShepherdPie ,

You can't buy a home either or else there will be a public record of your name and address.

I want to get started with *arr apps - here are all the things I don't understand about (reverse-/)proxies and networking in order to get it set up.

Please can someone show off how smart and sexy they are by answering these questions. I don't mind if you just link me to a video or guide explaining it (like I'm 5?) instead of typing it out - but please don't just send me stuff that says something like "To forward to ports correctly, simply forward the correct ports - but be...

ShepherdPie ,

So just an FYI Mullvad isn't a good option for torrenting anymore as they removed port forwarding from their service. You need port forwarding in order to seed files to others in most cases. I switched to AirVPN after Mullvad removed this option and have been satisfied.

Share your favorite automations

I've been running HA for a while, and it's been working well; I haven't had to change much in a few months. That being said, it's fun to tinker with it, and I'm curious to hear what kind of automations the rest of the community is using. What automations are you most proud of? What are your favorite? What kind of interesting...

ShepherdPie ,

Do you use Adaptive Lighting for the bedroom lights? I finally made the switch and it's pretty rad not having to deal with brightness changes throughout the day/night.

ShepherdPie ,

I thought this was implemented on the dashboard. I don't recall what exactly it's called (context cards?) but I recall you could click a button to show a separate card or click and have it open a second 'tab' on the dashboard to control more things like with your scene controller.

ShepherdPie ,

How are you going to self-host streaming hardware? A HTPC for every TV in the house along with a mouse and keyboard?

ShepherdPie ,

Not to mention this is being used to control products purchased by individuals. Are they not allowed to use their AC after paying for it because they don't agree to Haiers TOS?

ShepherdPie ,

They could have done what Chamberlin did with MyQ and just locked the API down so that it can't be used outside the app. What a ridiculous strategy that won't backfire at all.

ShepherdPie ,

To control Zigbee/Zwave you'll need USB dongles. They did start offering their own hardware (essentially a purpose built Pi) but I'm not sure if it includes either of these radios.

ShepherdPie ,

It's probably to access their API in order to control the device remotely.

ShepherdPie ,

Jesus I finally just understood where the name was derived from. I thought it was just some odd Chinese-Amazon-store-esque name.

ShepherdPie ,

It's a crapshoot regardless of the company. It just depends on how bad of day your delivery person is having and anyone is capable of having a bad day.

ShepherdPie ,

But they are indirectly going after these individuals. They just want Frontier to handle the punishments rather than doing it themselves.
