ShepherdPie ,

Yeah the text is all blurry from the image getting compressed.

ShepherdPie ,

It was a plea agreement so don't forget to lump the prosecutor in with the judge.

ShepherdPie ,

"My biggest regret is that I was caught."

ShepherdPie ,

So if we reelect Biden, that won't happen? Doesn't that mean he can stop that from happening now since he is currently president?

ShepherdPie ,

This might be a stupid answer, but a quick and dirty solution might be to stick the ATOM Echo inside a cup or other cone shaped object. I've done this at parties to make a phone's speaker appear to be louder.

ShepherdPie ,

And all the other US manufacturers.

ShepherdPie ,

Yes it is bad when those subsidies reduce the price of the car (or any other product) to half of what the competition is charging. This puts the competition out of business and gives consumers less options. Once the competition is gone, the price shoots up past what it would be initially because we have no other option. They've done this countless times in many industries.

ShepherdPie ,

Too expensive, not enough charging stations, and potential grid issues. I knew these ICE bans were unlikely to take effect as nobody seems in a hurry to build out the infrastructure needed for massive adoption.

Self hosted NAS + Lightweight Game Streaming Solution?

I have an aging gaming desktop with a GTX 970 that I've previously used to let friends/family stream games. My area has a lot of fiber so it's surprisingly usable, even got VR working. Problem is, I'd prefer to use it as a NAS most the time as it has plenty of drive bays and I need somewhere better to run jellyfin than my...

ShepherdPie ,

Network attached storage? I don't see the issue with OPs usage of the term.

ShepherdPie ,

The storage for Jellyfin is a NAS. You can run it on a Synology NAS too. This is the same thing just DIY.

Affordable Android Excellence: Best Smartphones Under $200 in 2024 (www.gizchina.com)

While flagship smartphones boast impressive features, spending $1,000 is not a prerequisite for a satisfying Android experience nowadays. If you’re in need of a new smartphone and have a budget of approximately $200, there are numerous excellent options available. Surprisingly, some of the best Android phones under $200 come...

We don't even know if they're rusting. All these articles are based off a couple pictures posted in a forum from a guy who doesn't even know what the actual issue is. These articles are just filling in the blanks with speculation.

ShepherdPie ,

Them telling drivers to meticulously clean the vehicles doesn't necessarily mean they're afraid its going to rust. They're probably concerned with staining and junk getting embedded into the panels. In the forum post, you can actually see a little bit of staining circling some of the debris on the panels. Furthermore, iron particles can get on the panel and rust themselves even though the actual panel itself isn't rusting. This is why they make iron decontamination spray for auto detailing.

I don't have the greatest memory.

For low end, my pick is TCL, and higher end is the incredible LG C3.

Samsung TVs are absolute trash now in my experience. I was a diehard fanatic in the early 2010s but Samsung stopped building quality products since then.

Waymo issued a recall after two robotaxis crashed into the same pickup truck (www.engadget.com)

Last year, two Waymo robotaxis in Phoenix "made contact" with the same pickup truck that was in the midst of being towed, which prompted the Alphabet subsidiary to issue a recall on its vehicles' software. A "recall" in this case meant rolling out a software update after investigating the issue and determining its root cause....

ShepherdPie ,

Yeah same reason why a single EV fire is national news but an ICE fire is just an unnoteworthy, everyday occurrence.

ShepherdPie ,

What if you consider its the software/firmware getting recalled and not the vehicle itself? Then it's all perfectly cromulent.

ShepherdPie ,

Whose been killed by autonomous vehicles?

ShepherdPie ,

You don't buff these things. You have to regrain them by rubbing an abrasive material across the panels in one direction same as a DeLorean.

ShepherdPie ,

That's what buffing does to paint as well, but it's not something you do when you need to clean it (whether paint or stainless), it's something you do to repair cosmetic damage.

ShepherdPie ,

Regardless of how easy they are you pick, every house has giant holes cut in the walls with nothing but a couple panes of glass separating the inside from the outside.

When it's parked on the side of the road, yeah.

Everyone in this area mentioned in the above comment is in the former group. None are in the latter group.

All seven of its California stations...

ShepherdPie ,

I don't understand why people think we have to pick a single solution for all vehicles on the road. We can have BEV and hydrogen at the same time.

ShepherdPie ,

Who's "we" here? Seems like major manufacturers are still pouring money into both technologies, meaning nobody but you and these other closed-minded commenters feel that they have everything all figured out and hold all the answers. GM and Honda just announced new investments into hydrogen vehicles as well.

This line of thinking is why EVs were crushed out of existence long ago until Tesla made them popular again just a few short years ago relatively speaking.

ShepherdPie ,

Seems like the winning standard I'd ICE then as it's worked well for over a hundred years and all the infrastructure is in place. Why should anyone pursue any other option?

ShepherdPie ,

Forgive me but which of these major manufacturers rely on publicly funded research when designing new vehicles?

Also where's your source for companies like GM, Honda, and Toyota being connected to the oil industry and doing their bidding when it comes to releasing new vehicles? How is it biting them in the ass? Toyota is currently on the forefront of solid state battery tech for BEVs. Perhaps you shouldn't believe every article you read on the internet.

ShepherdPie ,

According to whom? Companies also do tons of research since they're building proprietary products to sell. Which patents used in my Toyota Camry were publicly funded?

ShepherdPie ,

You're arguing that it's the best solution for everyone simply because it's the best solution for you. Hydrogen has a major advantage in that you can just refill the tank in an instant which is a major factor in people's decision not to buy a BEV and a major drawback for people who regularly drive long distances.

I just find it incredibly ridiculous that people (typically laypeople) think they have all the answers and can make calls on what's the right or wrong decision, how the future will play out, and what the one-size-fits-all solution will be. It's closed-minded and only prevents progress as it limits what's possible. Companies investing in hydrogen with their own money has literally zero impact on you, so why are you arguing against it when it has clear advantages in certain instances? What do you gain?

ShepherdPie ,

Yeah electricity along with a driveway/garage at your owned single family home.

I can't help but roll my eyes at the assertion that "instant battery charging" is not only feasible but simply being held back because nobody really wants it in a world where almost every person on the planet has at least one battery powered device that they charge daily. I'd love to hear the breakdown on how you can instantly supply 40-100kWh of energy through a wire small enough for a human to hold in their hands and input it into a Li-ion pack without it exploding.

Your close-minded layperson bullshit is certainly responsible for spreading the exact same FUD about hydrogen as the close-minded right-wing yokels who spread bullshit about BEVs leaving you stranded on the road before trapping you inside the vehicle and burning you alive from a battery fire. All that for what, so you don't have to suffer the terrible fate of choosing more than one option if you ever buy a new car? The horror.

Funny that Archers Wood happens to resemble a penis.

ShepherdPie ,

It's a well travelled path for any company in the tech sphere. Start out as a disruptor and breath of fresh air in a stagnant industry and then slowly crank the dial toward enshittification over time hoping that the reputation you previously built will keep your customer base from jumping ship too quickly.

ShepherdPie ,

It's not very efficient to have an array of 2TB drives versus a single 16TB drive for example. That's a lot of extra required power and ports for little gain under home use.

Taylor Swift?

I just had a ticketmaster subsidiary charge me taxes on two tickets in a state where we have zero sales tax.

@selfhosted Have a commerical @wireguard vpn on my server. The problem i have is that if i use a docker, it does use the vpn interface with iptables, but if that goes down, the docker still goes through without the vpn interface. I have looked at iptables, but docker makes it own, and bit of a minefield. Any ideas? Thanks

ShepherdPie ,

Just FYI for anyone else, you don't need to run the *arrs through a VPN only your torrent client as that's where your IP gets exposed to the outside world.

Music Piracy Is Back, Baby (gizmodo.com)

"Muso, a research firm that studies piracy, concluded that the high prices of streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music are pushing people back towards illegal downloads. Spotify raised its prices by one dollar last year to $10.99 a month, the same price as Apple Music. Instead of coughing up $132 a year, more consumers...

ShepherdPie ,

Agreed. I'm a frequent sailor of the high seas with TV and movies but I actually pay for a Spotify family plan because it's so convenient and I love the features they have like being able to use my phone app to cast music to any available nearby source or having a party and allowing multiple people to input songs to a shared playlist. I do encounter frequent bugs with all their updates but that hasn't risen above the level of mild annoyance yet.

Pirating music is such a pain in the ass these days since there is no standard naming conventions like with TV and movies and there can be multiple sources for the same song (single, album, compilation album, web rip, etc) so even tools like Lidarr don't make it easy and most public/private torrent trackers are pretty sparse when it comes to music outside of the most mainstream of mainstream albums.

ShepherdPie ,

It's like a kiss from a rose on the grave.

ShepherdPie ,

Fucking dirtbags. They were recently forced to lump all their fees into the ticket price so their new tactic is to tack on fake taxes when purchasing tickets. I recently bought some for a festival through a ticketmaster subsidiary (to a venue owned by ticketmaster) and they charged me $33 in taxes on the purchase. The thing is, I live in Oregon where we don't have any sales tax. I wrote both them and the promoter asking about it and they gave me some bullshit excuse about them being "state and local taxes" (venue is in rural Washington) even though that's not how it works when it comes to purchases nor are there any local taxes in that area. The rate they charged me doesn't even match the WA sales tax rate.

ShepherdPie ,

Those are called earplugs.

ShepherdPie ,

Yes, pretty much everywhere which is why you see files named something like: Forrest.Gump.1994.1080p.Bluray.DTS-MA.5.1.mkv. Movies and TV have databases like TVDB and TMDB which don't really exist for music. There are things like MusicBrainz but it's a crapshoot in my experience.

ShepherdPie ,

Back in those days there was a lot of options which meant you could typically find what you're looking for with the right search terms and knowing what to avoid so you didn't download an MP3 of Bill Clinton talking about Lewinski. Its definitely a lot more challenging these days since the quantity of files is lower while naming hasn't gotten any better.
