A Rising Enforcement of Censorship (blog.thenewoil.org)

In recent weeks, I’ve noticed a rise in censorship regarding SMS communication that’s not being discussed. At all. I’m concerned that it may become a slippery slope that eventually effects us all. I don’t have any dramatic, prose-ridden introduction this week. Just some news, facts, and observations I wanted to share. So...

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

iPhone to iPhone uses iMessage. Android to Android uses RCS. iPhone to Android uses SMS, but that will change soon when Apple finally joins the modern age and implements RCS.

Some people also use signal or WhatsApp, but it's not as common here.

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

Don't worry, it's fiction. It's not real. No actual planets were harmed in the making of this game.

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

Probably not, I'm sure they're training on Reddit's internal data set which likely includes all deleted posts.

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

Public information is public information.

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

Ya, lol. Sorry, I'm not sure if I replied to the wrong comment or just misread your comment earlier. I agree with you.

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

Have you ever heard of fair use?

I think you're taking the terms too literally. Unskilled labor doesn't actually mean the jobs require zero skill. It means they can be learned and mastered relatively quickly compared to other jobs. I've had many jobs and I've done both skilled and unskilled labor.

When I worked in retail I was able to learn the job in a day and master it in a month. For my current job as a software engineer I've been learning for over a decade and there's still a lot I don't know. The technology changes rapidly and you have to be constantly learning to keep up. I'm significantly better at my job now than I was when I only had 5 years of experience.

That said, ironically it's people that work in skilled jobs that are generally the biggest advocates of social policies for the good of all. I believe everyone should have all of their basic needs met just for existing, and I would gladly pay more taxes to contribute to that goal.

Did your brain die? Did you get reincarnated? If not, you're the same you.

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

I'm not defending this, but at least a human electively chooses this procedure and understands why they have a device attached to their head. The monkeys must have had no idea what was going on and just wanted to remove the foreign object.

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

Multiple variations means multiple factory configurations. Unless you're selling a lot of cars it may not be worth the cost of having those production line changes.

It's also not great when the pressure is on the outside of the vessel. It's good at containing pressure because that leads to tension on the carbon fibers which is when they're their strongest. But when the pressure's on the outside of the vessel they're more or less useless.

Natural selection hasn't really applied to humans for thousands of years. We beat nature when we created civilizations. Which is partly why some of these less than ideal genetic traits go unchecked now in the population.

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

True. I was thinking of the selective pressures of nature, but there are absolutely still self imposed selective forces acting on our species.

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

That's only true if people that work in offices reproduce at a higher rate than the general population, and I'm not entirely sure that's the case. If anything, societal trends have shown that in more developed countries where office work would be more common people are having fewer kids and populations are starting to decline.

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

That's not the point at all. They wanted to automate this with computers and it failed. They had to rely on workers in India to do the analysis. That's why they're canceling this service.

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

I know you're trying to be funny, but while AI does have many uses, I imagine the issue for Amazon was that much like self driving there were just too many edge cases to try to solve here.

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

Who pays extra for suburbs? Suburbs are significantly cheaper than the city.

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

I like suburbs because it's relatively calm, I can build a workshop in my garage, and there's still pretty good amenities. And it's significantly cheaper than the city.

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

How are suburbs subsidized and how are city costs inflated?

You just pick one up and carry it across the road and then drop it off in the little bin on the other side. The idea is that you're more visible when you're holding a flag.

Amazon's Hidden Chatbot Recommends Nazi Books and Lies About Amazon Working Conditions (www.404media.co)

An Amazon chatbot that’s supposed to surface useful information from customer reviews of specific products will also recommend a variety of racist books, lie about working conditions at Amazon, and write a cover letter for a job application with entirely made up work experience when asked, 404 Media has found.

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

What's up with Elaine's change of tone? She was saying the condoms were great until Kramer came in, and then switched to saying she had a bad experience.

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

Ya, just a dude and an afternoon and you've got it all covered, no prob.

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

ChatGPT is great for helping with specific problems. Google search for example gives fairly general answers, or may have information that doesn't apply to your specific situation. But if you give ChatGPT a very specific description of the issue you're running into it will generally give some very useful recommendations. And it's an iterative process, you just need to treat it like a conversation.

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

That's a huge oversimplification of the way LLMs work. They're not statistical in the way a Markov chain is. They use neural networks, which are a decent analogy for the human brain. The way the synapses between neurons are wired is obviously different, and the way the neurons are triggered and the types of signals they can send to other neurons is obviously different. But overall, similar capabilities can in theory be achieved with either method. If you're going to call neural networks statistics based, you might as well call the human brain statistics based as well.

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

No need to get offended. Maybe I misunderstood the intent behind your original message. I think you made a lot of good points.

I brought up the Markov chain because a common misconception I've seen on the Internet and in real life is that LLMs work pretty much the same as Markov chains under the hood. And I saw no mention of neural networks in your original comment.

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

No, I think the other commenter is right. They definitely store every version of every comment on their backend. Just because it's not displayed publicly doesn't mean they don't have the data.

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

AI is going great though, unlike web3. ChatGPT has already achieved mainstream adoption at a large number of major companies. And there were ads using images generated with midjourney at the super bowl.

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

I like how you didn't respond to the points I made about either ChatGPT or midjourney. ChatGPT has a number of large corporate customers now that use it as a tool in the creation of professional products. And midjourney is still going strong and is widely used, which is why I mentioned the Superbowl.

Yes, gemini images are on pause until they fix the vulnerabilities to abuse. But I use Gemini as the engine for Google assistant on my phone now, so the service is obviously still gaining traction.

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

I love Linux, but it's extremely annoying how many threads there are showing a mildly annoying and optional feature in Windows with 10 people replying "Use Linux!". As if Linux doesn't have a ridiculous number of UX problems itself.

It's fairly common. People with money hire contractors to do the work for them. People that want to save money tend to DIY it. But redoing bathrooms is quite common.

You can write long form content in logseq. Shift enter gives you a new line instead of a new bullet.

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

Ya, it makes sense considering China imports 2/3 of their oil. Solar and EVs make a lot of sense when you don't have much in the way of fossil fuels. Not even considering the environmental benefits

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

Maybe they're asking chatgpt to generate a password for them

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

Define intelligence.

SparrowRanjitScaur , (edited )

No need for personal attacks. Since you won't define it I will:

The ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills (from Oxford Languages)

I would argue this applies to ChatGPT. ChatGPT exists under the hood as a neutral network, and is clearly capable of acquiring knowledge during training. And ChatGPT is also clearly capable of applying that knowledge in producing answers to questions or novel solutions to problems.

Based on this definition, I would argue that ChatGPT is intelligent. Whether ChatGPT is sentient or not is a very different question. I would argue not, but again, that depends on the definition of sentience.

You think airlines don't make money on economy class? That's the vast majority of their income. Of course they're going to serve their largest customer base.

Amazon has been listing products with the title, 'I'm sorry, I cannot fulfil this request as it goes against OpenAI use policy' (www.businessinsider.com)

Amazon has been listing products with the title, 'I'm sorry, I cannot fulfil this request as it goes against OpenAI use policy'::Products have appeared on the platform with odd titles that are seemingly related to OpenAI's usage policy.

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

This would be easy to fix. Just run the result of the first openai api call into another one asking "Is this a valid product description?". Or even cheaper, just filter out any results that contain openai.
