How to Figure Out What Your Car Knows About You (and Opt Out of Sharing When You Can) (www.eff.org)

Cars collect a lot of our personal data, and car companies disclose a lot of that data to third parties. It’s often unclear what’s being collected, and what's being shared and with whom. A recent New York Times article highlighted how data is shared by G.M. with insurance companies, sometimes without clear knowledge from the...

Thanks I opted out via the eff links to my car manufacturer.

Not possible for people that commute miles/km to work

Some people are required to wear a suit and not smell like a pig, after a bike ride of 25miles to work would do.

Finally got a UPS

Keeping tradition with doing things backwards, I've finally got a UPS for the rack (mounted in the bottom of the stack). Got a PowerWalker VI 2200R. Its a 2U unit which is all the space I've got left in the rack. Decent price and decent I/O with USB, serial and a slot-in for network expansion + 4 IEC outputs. Its powering...

First sentence, I agree. Second, factually incorrect. 3rd, i agree, parents should be monitoring their children and teaching them about birds and bees for their age, giving them knowledge so they dont go looking cause they are curious.

Nothing said restricts websites in a whack a mole fashion as this will never work. Kids will always find a way around restrictions.

Appreciation / shock at workplace IT systems

After self hosting several services for a few users, with SSO, backups, hardware issues etc, I really appreciate how good the IT was in my old company. Everything was connected, smooth, slick and you could tell it was secure. I had very few issues and when I did, they were quickly solved. Doing this all at scale for thousands of...

Evangelical app 'Bless Every Home' is mapping personal information of immigrants and non-Christians in a bid to conduct door-to-door religious conversions and “prayerwalking” rituals targeting them. (newrepublic.com)

It puts a lot of features at the fingertips of the faithful, including the ability to filter whole neighborhoods by religion, ethnicity, “Hispanic country of origin,” “assimilation,” and whether there are children living in the household....

I have unearthed Google Gemini's utopian vision for our future

The main risk currently is LLMs being incorporated within biological robots. Therefore all creators of LLMs need to have regulation under a treaty that states they will not permit use of their LLM within a biological robot and will take active measures to include in the source code a shutdown mechanism should it detect...

So... theoretically someone can use lemmy as their own image repository?

Another successful OpenBSD setup

I've been buying these little boxes from AliExpress for years to use as firewalls and routers. My oldest one is almost 9 years old now! OpenBSD installs just fine. Just a BIOS tweak to always boot up after power is restored.

While i agree, no one provides full source blobs for firmware and bios that i am aware of. Please correct me if I am wrong, however.

StopSpazzing ,
@StopSpazzing@lemmy.world avatar

Open source bios yes, but you still have close source firmware blobs for amd/intel used on those systems. The only way to do this is to make 100% of the hardware.

Also please note, I am using coreboot already on my pcengines router.

Any reason why there is no tools for allowing a community to say restrict first post(s) to text only until they get a # of positive likes? Or ability to allow communities to require 1 comment on a specific topic until can post own?

Battery Draining by Private Service App on My Phone, Why? (programming.dev)

There is no option for deletion for this app. Its draining my battery, and I read various posts they said that this app spy location and do lot of other stuff. I’m really confused after noticing it and reading such stuff. https://www.reddit.com/r/androidapps/comments/yyv09e/private_compute_services_app/...

While easy to do, issue with doing this is you don't give active views to the lists that get combine so the owners of those lists are less inclined to update/maintain them. I would recommend if the list is useful to get each of the combine lists he uses and add them all separately.

Sublinks Aims to Be a Drop-In Replacement for Lemmy (wedistribute.org)

Seems like an interesting effort. A developer is building an alternative Java-based backend to Lemmy's Rust-based one, with the goal of building in a handful of different features. The dev is looking at using this compatibility to migrate their instance over to the new platform, while allowing the community to use their apps of...
